So nearing completion of the Camel and figure I am starting on My next project. I am joining SPAD mania. I plan to build Three:
#1: Frank Luke 27th Aero Squadron. Using Aviattic Decals and Frank Luke figure. Doing #21 to be different
#2: Eddie Rickenbacker 94th Aero Squadron using the Kit Decals.
#3: A SPAD from Esc. SPA. 3 ( Perhaps Guynemer) but might do another.

I need to find or take New Photos of the Aviattic Decals and Parts. I will Post photos of the reference also when I get them taken.
-
I will keep an eye on this thread!
One day I want to put Eduards "American Eagles" edition on my bench. I guess I can learn here, which colors to use and watch a great build!
Have a lot of fun (in this crazy times),
Frank
-
RAGIII,
I will look forward to watching this and all the other builds of the Hobbycraft Spad. I've a few in the stash.
This is a kit that seems to have been ignored by the aftermarket world except a few bits from Aviatic and Tom's Model Works.
As my Irish wife would say, "Go on ya boy ya!!"
Kevin
-
Rick, by any chance are you fitting an alternative windscreen to any of these aeroplanes? My kit is missing one
I can offer a Roden Nieuport style one from a SPAD VII, there might be another one in there too
Otherwise I'll make one
Richard

I will need to check and see what style My chosen subjects have. As I don't have a Photo of Lukes #21 I could perhaps fudge on that one! I have several Roden SPADS so won't need a trade. I will get back ASAP.

Thanks Guys. Here are the Reference Photos and also the Aviattic Elite series stuff for Frank Luke.

Fantastic Rick, you are going to be busy. I love your multiple builds and look forward to your progress.
-
This is going to be a great project, will be following along again. Nice multi build to keep you busy in lock down.
-
Your multi-builds are always worth following Rick. If I tried that I would be in a muddle before the first evening was out! I will of course being dropping by regularly to keep an ey on how you progress.
Stephen.

Thanks Guys! It has been a year or so since I did a Dual build so figured I would Make up for the lack 8) Who knows, I may even add a fourth SPAD :o
RAGIII

So while building three new ones I figured I would go back and fix some Major Mistakes with this one built years ago. Not sure how it will end up painted and what Markings!

You need to fix errors on that? It looks fantastic!

You need to fix errors on that? It looks fantastic!
Thanks Richie but Yes, Lots of errors! The wing camo is wrong, the rigging doesn't represent the double wood filled wires, and the triangle on the upper fuselage should be red, white and blue!
RAGIII
-
Other then the errors rick , you did do a fantastic job on this one :) Still three on the go .... just remember that the decals don't go all on one plane ! ;)
Terri

Three new planes on the making; well, you don’t loose time, Rick! I am keen on seeing your progress on these as I have one in the stash but couldn’t feel the motivation to think about starting it yet.
Andreas
-
Quite an ambitious project, Rick. I'll be following along.
-
wow yes this is ambitious - the rigging of those double wires and double bays scares me enough for only a single SPAD but good luck and will be following for sure!
-
Rick,
A Triple Play??!! ...... and as pointed out by Petrov27 already the rigging ain't "no small walk in the park"! I'm just curious, where do you display all these beauties? You must have a "subscription" to a display case manufacturers line :o!!
Cheers,
Lance

I used to fret over errors on models mostly based on things I didn't know at the time. Sounds to me like all you really need to do is a bit of masking to convert the upper deck marking to tricolor. For my own purposes, unless I'm gonna lay awake about it at night, life is too short to partially disassemble and refinish models and moving on to the next build is a perfectly acceptable option. For what it's worth, I dig your Nungesser SPAD. It looks marvelous!
-
Rick,
It is very nice and I had the same thought as Vickers, convert that white chevron to a tricolor and it's a wrap! :)
Cheers,
Lance

I have room for about 12 more 1/32nd WW1 fighters in MY 2 cases. After that things will get rough :(

It May end up the way you and Vickers suggest or I might try adding another color to the upper wing at least? Time will tell!

I have started the basic interior work on all three SPADS. I am only showing one that I have advanced a bit further on than the other two. Basic Linen and wood done and added the canvas bag to the right side. Still Much to do!

PS: Looking at My build that was completed years ago you really won't see much if any of that bag 8)
PPS: I based the size of the bag on the box included in the Roden SPAD VII. Seems to work!
-
Starting to look Spadly Rick. I like your interpretation of the bag. I have no idea what they would have carried in it.

Thanks SP. I have No Idea either 8) I used a box made of sheet styrene then covered it with dried out lens wipe papers. Painted it a light beige color...Bone White from Valejo.

Terri
Thanks Terri! Two More to do today!
RAGIII
-
Great start Rick!
I have no idea what they would have carried in it.
Could that be for bullet sleeves?
The german aircrafts collects them already in early types (looks like the need more brass and copper). On my actual build Sopwith Dolphins the sleeves are dropped, but some hit the radiators on the side and caused problems. So some Dolphins got tubes for the sleeves on the cockpit sides. A bag would catch them there?
Only a idea ...
Cheers,
Frank
-
Thanks for the idea about the lens wipes Rick - another one to put away for possible future use. Good strt too - but I still do not quite understand why you have to build three simultaneously!
Stephen.

Good thought but no, the belts were collected in a box up front on later SPAD VII's and XIII's. The shell casings were indeed ejected. I think it was just for carrying items, perhaps luggage or personal gear when moving to a new location. First Aid Maybe? They were large!

The basic wood tones are done in all three now. I will go back and do a little with Tamiya clear yellow and orange...but not much!

Three Spads makes sense in that Spads have a lot of colors and details not too common to other WWI planes. Once you round up all the stuff for one Spad you might as well gather a little extra and do 3 rather than 6 mos or a year later, you have to round up paint and details again.
sp
-
Good start Rick, this will be a big test of you organisational skills but I know you'll do a great job! My workbench is a major disaster area, must have a clear up!

Richie you obviously have not seen My bench photos in the thread for show us your work bench. :P I am not organized at all! I just accidentally move forward...unless I have one of those backward moments!

PS: here is a link to the thread but Mine is after a major cleanup. I mention 4 bags of trash! There is another thread somewhere that shows My bench in its usual status!

3 SPADs is an ambitious endeavor and these are already looking good! I tend to build in pairs, although I've occasionally built 3 or 4 WWII types in parallel. I agree with smperry, it does seem more efficient. Sometimes I almost dread the more tedious tasks like pin washing panel lines on three or four models; I usually end up feeling like Jack Nicholson sitting at a typewriter. I once built an H-75, a Fiat G.50, and a Bf 109G-2 that were all in the same Finnish livery and by the time I was 2/3rd finished with all of the masking I was about ready to just dip the last one into a bucket or black paint and call it recognition model. Discipline and patience, I suppose.
This will be a fun project to watch, RAGIII, and I'll be paying close attention to learn all I can from your build.
-
Haha, Rick that is a great thread! I see what you mean, 4 bags of trash on top of that would have looked spectacular. I must add one of mine too although I'm not feeling quite so bad about it now. ;)

LOL, I won't be rushing to build 3 Spads at once....2 Roden SE5a might be on the cards though. ;)

I have started to do a bit of construction and further painting on the first airframe. I have painted some appropriate areas Horizon blue and added the fuel(Oil) line from the tank going forward.

Thanks Stephen. After checking pictures again on the Memorial Flight SPAD XIII I have made some changes already ::) Version 2 of the bag is more rectangular than square and I had the piping wrong. I also have given the blue a second coat!

Thanks Richie!

PS: Please excuse the Pen in the photo. I added this to show My Non Modeling Friends on Face Book the general size of what I am working on.
PPS: There is some touch up needed where the earlier incorrect Pipe was located and the seat is not attached.

Good work! I've done some triple and quadruple builds, but never in this scale and certainly not WWI subjects with all that rigging and aligning of wings, etc. You must have a good system in place for organising this!?

So the end of todays painting session. The remaining fuselage halves are painted...save one as I am still not sure if I am doing Guynemers as the third. If I do the panel behind the cockpit on the left side is not there so it would remain Linen. Decisions, Decisions!

Three schmee Rick...you're using mirrors :-)
Well whatever you do, you'll have it down pat by the time you get to #3.
A most ambitious project. You look to have gotten off to a great start. I look forward to seeing your progress. If I time it right you will stay a step or two ahead of my Spad build and I can make use of some of your good ideas.

Congratulations on making it to retirement Rick, I love seeing folks make it that far and still have the ability to pursue their interests. I need a Spad in my collection so this is of great interest. I made Eddie Rickenbacker's Spad in 1/72 as a young lad, didn't do any rigging though.

Great work Rick and not a drop of oil leakage from all those tanks and pipes. Very clean assemblies.

Thanks Terri! I actually have gone back and taken out a couple of the bends in the piping on two of the pit floors. I also started sanding the left fuselage panel off of the third XIII. I decided to go with the conversion to an early model 8)
RAGIII
-
Most probably won't see the changes but after looking at more photos and Richards build I went back and corrected some of the piping angles on all three floors.( Still not perfect but better to My Eye) I also added the basic hammer, ( still need to add brackets and maybe tone down the head). I have decided to go forward with doing a Guynemer version of SPAD XIII so I sanded off the panel on the left fuselage. The total work doesn't look like much but it took up several hours today 8)

PS: I also added an instrument face to the location in front of the rectangular box.
PPS: I like the shape of the Roden SPAD VII seat so having a couple to spare I decided to use them. My SPAD VII kits will be using a seat patterned off of the Eduard PE set.

What an efficient little factory you have producing such lovely aircraft! Great progress, Rick.

Very nice Rick. Are those oil tanks kit parts or scratched? That is a first rate job of sanding away the metal panel. So easy to make a mess of it and you pulled it off perfectly.

All coming along nicely here.
That hammer is one of the parts that made my 'stop right there!' alarm go off, so my XIII hasn't got one. I notice in the pictures it is connected to a cable, and that there is a cable that goes to the rip off panel on the bottom of the main tank. I wonder if that is the same cable?

Thanks Richard. I didn't go as far as trying to shape the handle or the head on the hammer. Just a couple of different sizes of rod glued together. Really won't be seen that much once all is assembled. I will be working on a simple solution to make it look like something is holding the Hammer in place today, as well as the control stick. Then on to the fuselage side detailing 8) At least that is the plan!

Haha, that's a brilliant work space. "Untidier than mine!" I just told Mrs W. She didn't agree. We just spent an hour looking for a small SE5a part, the wood splinters from my propeller whittling caused many oaths to be sworn. ;)

I don't see how you keep going Rick. Once I get done with a section of a model like a cockpit or engine, I'm ready to move on to something else. Last thing i want to do is repeat the same process two more times. I tried a triple build of Breguet Br.14s, one is still sitting on the shelf of Doom.

Hi Rick! This is a fascinating build, and I guess a good way to get to things you might otherwise put off (by doing them simultaneously--no excuses once you've committed ;D). All the pain at once! ;) I admire your patience and perseverance. The modeling is top notch too, as your triple cockpits demonstrate. Well done!

SP, the leather is not difficult. I use a mix of burnt umber and mars brown. I paint it over a base of acrylic. All I do after is add a bit of mars orange on high points and blend.

Rick
I have used bamboo skewers for years. At the risk of telling Grandpa how to suck eggs, here are a few tips to save some hassle:
In the larger scales, only make one plank out of the the skewer, right out of the center, half the thickness of the plank on either side of the centerline.
Split the plank out of the skewer with a #11 blade. You want it a little thicker than needed. Sand both sides of the plank smooth and end up with the desired thickness.
Sand an airfoil cross section to the plank. (See Harry Woodman's method in his scale models in plastic card book.)
Make more planks than just enough. You may only get half the length of the plank usable if the skewer does not split evenly. Don't worry about it, just make enough to compensate and for broken or lost attempts. The skewers come a whole bunch to a pack, so only settle for the best examples.
Cut to length, use some kind of benchmark or jig to ensure they are all exactly the same length and trim ends as per the needs of your model.
Finally drill the ends and insert your favorite pin material. Bamboo grain is like tubes, so it drills real easy. Careful not to poke holes in your fingers.
I finished them with a watercolor pencil and then multiple coats of Pledge, tinted or clear as dictated by the subject. You can also paint them as you would plastic or resin ones,
Bamboo is incredibly strong, being slightly flexible adds to that strength. It is easy to work and looks good, you are going to like it.

Good Luck on your carving. My experimental strut only took about 15 minutes. The real ones will perhaps take longer ::)
RAGIII
Are the Hobbycraft struts that bad? They look quite finely moulded compared to some
Richard
The kit struts are indeed finely molded. It the shape of the H struts that is troubling. The large indentation on the trailing edge of both front and rear is what bothers me. If the struts have an indentation it is not as prominent as Hobby Craft have Molded it. We will see how things go. I may end up using Alternate Plan B 8)
RAGIII
-
Don't the struts neck down to the central fixing? My understanding is the vertical struts are in two parts
Richard
-
Excellent job on those instruments, Rick.
I have made struts from coffee stirring sticks. Don't know what kind of wood they are. They were a bit flimsy, so I glued two together, then sanded both sides down until I got the thickness I wanted. With the glue seam in the middle, they are significantly stiffer and stronger. Then drilled holes in each end for a mounting wire.
Good luck with the struts.
-
everything continues to look great!
For the instrument panel details, are the switches from an etched set? Are the instrument bodies parts that come in the kit or scratched?
-
Don't the struts neck down to the central fixing? My understanding is the vertical struts are in two parts
Richard
First I think you are correct as to the two part construction. As for the "Neck Down" part again It think you are correct. My question is to what degree? Compare the Hobby Craft H strut to the Roden kit H strut. It is there on the Roden kit but more subdued...or am I imagining things :o Knowing My skills I May end up going with the kit struts slightly modified or as is !

Thanks Patrick. The switches were made from wire. I cut some bezels and used the pieces to sort of represent the surroundin parts. As for the instruments they are a combination of kit parts, sprue backings, and some have PE bezels. The faces are Airscale.

I suspect you are running into a real world physics/model world thing.
My bet is the real struts (these are not struts of course) were actually quite thin - far thinner than you can easily injection mould. If I'm right, both kits are compromises, and you are seeing different ways around the problem.
If so, thin struts represent a greater risk than thick ones, likewise thin necks are more risky than thick ones. It's possible the Hobbycraft kit was pushing the technology more than Roden and taking a chance on failed mouldings
I have noticed the Hobbycraft kit tends to be much finer in detail than the Roden ones - the trailing edge of the wing for instance
We need some real-world information to know which is more accurate

If you have the SPAD XIII Datafile look at the photo on page 31. If not I am attaching a link to Mikes PDF. His strut work and reference photos are on page 14.
I also find it interesting looking at the seats. I used the Roden seat because it more closely matched the one in the restored Memorial Flight SPAD 13. The seat ends right at the bottom of the Head rest and Pad, blocking the V shaped brace.( Revelles Old 1/28th kit seat is even closer). But looking at the reference photos in Mikes build the seat ends lower and the bracing shows behind. Probably one of those things that could vary by Manufacturer...too late to change Mine Now ::)
RAGIII
PS: Just checked and the Memorial flight SPAD is Kelner built so at Least Rickenbackers SPAD will be close. Revelle probably used his in Making the 1/28th kit ;D

Nice looking cockpits. Following these Spad builds are a great help for my future plans. I'd like
to build one on the guise of the 13th, 22nd or 93rd Aero Squadron.

I am catching up Rick and you have moved so fast that I have had to spend more time than usual doing so! Your instruments are really the bees knees - I forget sometimes just how small these parts are even in this giant scale. I have got to make some for my build shortly and I am not sure than they are going to be anywhere near as good as yours, and mine are going to be much more visible!!
Excellent modelling .... x3!!
Stephen.

Great work on the instruments Rick. Bet you had fun carving the strut, might as well make the rest of them now. The kit parts will still be there if you don't like the results. At this rate you'll have them all made and the wings on in no time! :)

Right. I have looked at lots of pictures of SPADS
Those false struts look pretty straight to me

Thanks Richie! Yes, I will carve a bunch of struts, but I do plan to use the kit supplied outer struts....unless I suddenly get really good at this 8) Alternate plan "B" is to use card and superglue to fix the kit inner struts.

Moving along:
1. I added sheet styrene rounded tips to the upper wing of the "Early Guynemer" version wing and removed what was necessary from the original "Square" tipped wings. Next process will be to use Milliput , then sand away anything that isn't correct 8)
2. I filled the fuselage seams on two out of three fuselages. One is the early Guynemer fuselage and I sanded a bit more on the removed panel from the left fuselage.
Next will be to fill and sand the third fuselage and work on the lower wing of the Early version.

A small update.
1. I have added the basic tip conversion to both wings. Final shaping still to be done.
2. I rolled a PE barrel for one of the Vickers. Just resting in place so not lined up. ( I still have need for 4 more Vickers if anybody wants to sell some at a reasonable cost( From WNW Camel, Snipe, or Dolphin).

Thanks Richie. I happened to have a Part set for the Hobby Craft/ Academy Camel that I won't be using so figured the MGs would work for the SPAD, at least one of them. Hopefully I will find someone that is using Gaspatch Guns for their Camel, Snipe, or Dolphin 8)

Your jacket looks great!
I don't find a 1/32 PE set from Part (strange company name), but for 1/48 there is a Vickers only PE set. You can build 12 jackets (4 of each type). But I think this is not available in 1/32.
There are also sets available from Eduard, may be better available for you and much cheaper as Gaspatch:

I'm glad Rick used these - I'm using them on my SPAD and I couldn't remember where they came from! I annealed mine and they bend easily
They're a good representation of the French Colt/Vickers with the vents front and rear

Ken, I use a set of cheap drills (without thicker shaft at the end) from ebay. The drills are junk, but so I have HSS shafts in 0.1mm steps.
It starts from 0.4mm with 10 drills, for the bigger ones are only 5 included.
They are blacked, so I can use them for hold parts during soldering without the danger that the part is stick to them.
Just my 2 cents,
Frank

Thanks for the LInks Frank. I am going to Make Do with what I have around the stash. I have a couple of Roden Vickers and a Copperstate version. The Roden Jackets are better(Not Great) and I will need to drill the ends out and fabricate the end cover. I will use the Copperstate version with the Gaspatch Vickers 11 mm Balloon Gun that came with the Aviattic Decals so all will have two MGs although they will look slightly different. I will eventually have to replace the Roden ones in the Nieuport 24 and 27 but that can wait ;D

You think you have Triple Vision, you should see things from My perspective :o Thanks, for the comment and I have begun to do a little improvement on the struts. I learned quicklly that even being VERY CAREFUL the best method is to leave the H on the sprue and work from there! I have used "SUper Filla" , Superglue and talcom powder, to change the H strut profile. Working pretty well. I will post photos soon. As for the original trial strut that I cut loose, I broke it in about 4 places even trying to be super careful. I can only hope My repairs work!

Thanks Stephen. Time for Triple vision as todays session went as planned. All three are at the same stage with just a bit to touch up before painting. I added the cooling openings to the cowl of the Guynemer bird. Far from perfect but to get it exact would have required removing the shutters and screen area and scratch building replacements. As a Matter of fact in actuality the cowling itself "should have " been replaced as it represents the two piece version with rolled opening.... I really didn't want to go that far! Thanks Ken. Like I said I had a Minor Setback yesterday. I noticed that there was a scratch in the paint that looked odd. A little testing showed that the paint was not adhering. I was forced to strip all three(using just a soft cloth and rubbing) ! So I mixed a new batch of "Ecru" using Tamiya paint. I think I have matched this batch pretty well with the Booklet from Aviattic. So two days lost but Today I will be back on track!

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the comment! So I am now back to where I was two Days ago. Both SPADS have had the New Tamiya Ecru Mix painted. One needs some touch up, scratched while handling too soon. Just to be sure I tried to remove more by rubbing and all seems safe ::)

Top persistence Rick, I have thrown in the towel many times after setbacks on builds but you have just rolled up your sleeves and cracked on. The Spads are looking great, really looking forward to seeing more progress on these. Spads ar very purposeful looking fighters, they remind me a little of the P47 Thunderbolt with that big radial engine and robust appearance.

Thanks for the comments Richie! This was a minor setback. Like I said removing the paint was easy as it just rubbed off, no stripping agent needed 8) I like the new Ecru color better anyway and I filled a few holes in the under surface of the wings that I had forgotten about. So if all works out well tomorrow I should be able to start painting the upper surfaces!

Ecru. Is it a custom mix of Tamiya paints? Could you share your secret formula?
-
Ecru. Is it a custom mix of Tamiya paints? Could you share your secret formula?
Yes it is VERY Custom 8) Those who have followed My builds in the past know I am a "Seat of the Pants" type Modeler. I can give you a list of the colors I used but as for percentages I have No Idea ??? I started with TamiyaXF57(Buff) mixed with XF53( Neutral grey, and XF2 (white). I added a little sky grey, more white, then started adding that mix to XF55 Deck tan, More white, ETC. until I came up with a match I liked. I ended up with 4 bottles of various mixes until I hit on the one I used ::) In the end if I had a bottle of a lighter bluish grey it would probably have been easier. I would start with the Deck Tan, white, and a greyish blue. I Hope this Helps ;D

Looking good Rick! I liked your description of the custom paint mix operation. That's probably closer to the truth of the prototype than you might think! :o I suspect they sometimes used whatever was on hand to get things done when certain "official" colors ran out or supplies were delayed.
I am really looking forward to your further painting adventures on this handsome trio.

Rick, you made a nice progress! The number of finished models 2020 will be increased by 3 soon 8)
Do you mix much more paint then needed? I hate to mix, because I would never hit the same color again. And if 80% are done, the mixed paint bottle will be empty >:(
So if I stick to original paints the chances are much higher, to get the same color shade with a new bottle.
Cheers,
Frank

Just went through this whole thread Rick, so impressive! Like others I don’t usually do more than 1 at a time, although I imagine a Camel series in my distant future, I have a number of them. Really enjoying your detailing work and the mods you’ve made to create the Guynemer ship. Question for you and the group: I thought the Hobbycraft kits were re-boxing’s of Roden parts? I have a VII and a XIII in the stash, I’ve always for years loved the lines of the SPADs, with the fat radiator face and the scalloped trailing edges. Any way model on, thanks for sharing!

So, I ran out of Tamiya thinner and Lacquer thinner and only got one more color added to the Bleriot and Kelner built SPADS. Going out tomorrow in hopes of getting both but should at least be able to find the Lacquer Thinner at Wal Mart. Probably will need to fine tune the beige areas on the fuselage as the other colors are applied.

PS: Although it appeas that there is grey in front of the beige it is lighting. The areas in front of the beige are actually light green!
PPS: The beige has the same Aluminum dope mixture as the green but it is not as evident. Wondering if the darker the color the less it shows ::)

So all is now painted. I will have to adjust the width of the white stripe on the rudders as I was just a tad off ??? Just in case someone wonders about the French blue stripe leading off on the Rickenbacker SPAD it was indeed this way when received. It also had Rickenbackers full markings before the stripe was changed to the blue on the trailing edge of the rudder. Next up clear gloss then applying the markings.

Thanks for the heads up Richard. On the Hobby Craft Gear struts did you add sheet plastic then sand away everything that wasn't correct? As for the wing struts I am going with my earlier semi correction and hoping they hold together. Funny thing is the one I built OOB years ago the struts are very strong once in place, not correct shape but I tried flexing them today and they are pretty solid. So while you are making struts feel free to just do 3 more sets ::)

No, the Hobbycraft legs are square, they should be roughly aerodynamic so there is plenty to scrape away.

I don't think I would do all that sanding/scraping away that much plastic . I would take the lazy way and trace them out on sheet stock
, cut out and shape , clean up as needed .
Terri
If you are referring to the legs, the injected parts were very much like pieces of sheet material to start with

RAGIII,
The camo looks just right. I'm sure there will be a new surge of Spads, in all scales, in planing stages due to your inspiration.
Keep the updates coming, they are very informative.

Great finished camo on all three, Rick!
The strange struts and rigging forced some social distance between me and those SPAD kits in my stash 8)

So true, Kevin!

The camo does look good Rick. Good luck with the struts and u/c legs. Personally I would carve them from thick plastic but it is your call.
Stephen.

Just catching up!! Very nice work!!
Steve
-
Missed the latest until just now.
You might as well make your own struts, you'd have to work hard to make them as bad as the kit parts.
The fishplate detail on the Roden aside, a coat of paint and nobody will notice the U/C struts next to the outstanding Camo and great detailing you have done. You may have spent some time refining them, but you would have easily spent twice the time scratch building them.

Thanks Guys your comments keep Me Inspired! Now for a small snag :-[ I was happily applying decals on the Rickenbacker bird. When I got to the #1 for the Upper Wing I noticed an issue. It is WAY TOO SMALL!! Oddly their box art profile has it correct! As a matter of fact it is even too small for the under side of the bottom wing. So it looks like I will need to do My best to make a Mask. Should be easy , Right ::)

Shame about that numeral Rick. Limey Pilot (Ian B) also had to make white numerals outlined in red for his current build - the problem seems to be contagious!
The other transfer markings look super though.

So I have begun to paint the Guynemer SPAD. I started by misting Tamiya white over the ribs. I taped off some of the ribs to represent the noticeably lighter rib tapes seen in photos. Next was a Mottled coat of Tamiya black. The next step will be a thin application of the base coat of beige.

Thanks as always Stephen! I just finished a couple of hours applying the first of the top/base coat. One thing I am finding out is it is difficult for me to decide when enough is enough. If I err I would rather it be to the monotone side than having a blotched black look ::)

Those with sharp eyes will see a glitch in the checkered stripe on the undersurface of Luke's @21. I ripped the decal and repaired, but at some point it separated and dried without Me noticing. I am thinking of a Fabric replacement over the stripe.... Hey it was flown by Luke and surely took some damage ::)

You really are motoring with these Rick. All three are of the very highest standard and look super - I am having problems keeping up with you - totally breathless!!

Thanks to All for the very Nice comments! Today I worked on some Vickers Guns but couldn't resist getting one of the three on it's legs 8) I did sand a bit on the struts to at least round them off a bit.

That is good news, I'm so looking forward to seeing them used. To lift the stencil all in one piece I put a piece of masking tape across all the component parts. The lovely thing about the this masking material is that if you buff the edges with a cocktail stick you can clearly see if it has adhered properly. Can't wait to see the results! :)

So going on with the wheels. After painting the wheel portion blue I applied a white star decal. It was then that I Noticed the wheels on Rickenbacker's SPAD were reversed. I had to drill the opening for the axle all the way trough and of course paint the blue and add the star marking. I replaced the locking mechanism and did some weathering on the tires and wheels. I was lucky that I had a spare set of wheels ;D
RAGIII
PS: Just for the record, Hobby Craft failed to supply the wheel Markings on their decal sheet :(

I have added the Vickers to all three SPADS. I used what I had so all are slightly different. Luke has Gaspatch Barrels from the Aviattic set and Stephen( Lone Modeler). Rickenbacker has Part PE barrels added to the kit butts, and Guynemer has Modified Roden Nieuport 27 Vickers.

So not a lot done on My first day back but some progress was made. I added the black shadowing to the numbers on the fuselage of the Guynemer SPAD using decal strips. I also applied the black X on the upper wing. Not really noticeable but I also glued the Vickers in place....on all three. And just for fun: The Aviattic Luke figure:

Decals strips is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!

I would say , same as the cowl colour ? If it was metal it would be more of a gary shade . I feel it is too dark to be metal , but I could be very well be wrong . Nice job by they way ;)

After looking at a picture of a SPAD at the NASM web site, it looks like an oil cooler, painted black. It has ribs or tubes on the bottom surface. Not all SPADs had this.

Hi Rick, I downloaded the Smithsonian institute picture and increased the exposure considerably. Unfortunately Flickr isn't playing at the moment but there is definitely a grille there. The black and white war time photo has the vague suggestion of it too. When Flickr decides to play nicely again I will post it so you can see. The grille slates run lengthways.

Thanks Richie. Yes, the kit has the grille. The Smithsonian photo seems plausible as an option although the other Rickenbacker photo I posted seems to Not Be black. Taken at a different time so it is possible that it was changed out or painted later. At least I have photo evidence for different options 8)

So I have reached the weathering point on all three SPADs. I looked at lots of photos and then started on the Rickenbacker SPAD. I used an Oil wash and Tamiya pastels. Still a bit to do. The undersides are almost finished but still need to do the uppers on the wings.

You know Rick , your weathering has really improved over the years and I must say that is looking very sweet indeed ! :)
The underside is most impressive , just love how the fabric turned out . Have you tried using the Tamiya pastels as a wash before ? Works very well but not on a dull surface they don't . Yields interesting results though . Looking forward to the others :)
Terri
-
The underside looks great! Believable. My eyes can't detect much up top.... TBH, with a fully enclosed cowl, I wouldn't expect to see much. To repeat a phrase I think I've read about 100 times: "With aircraft weathering, less is more"
Quick question for you regarding glue points for struts and rigging: Do you use anything to keep paint from getting into them? And which glue do you use for your struts?
Gaz

Great job on the weathering Rick. I think I need to order some of those Tamiya pastels. The oil stained lower surfaces are looking incredibly real.

Yes, great job on the weathering. Just the right amount of tonal variation - not overdone.

Gaz
Thanks Gaz. The upper wings haven't been done yet but will be a Bit cleaner than the undersides. The fuselage has some exhaust staining and oils around the panels.
As for the glue points and struts it really depends. With WNW I usualy try to keep the openings as clean as possible or go back with a tooth pick and clean them out. I then just place the struts in position and hit them with Tamiya Xtra Thin when all is lined up.
With this kit I will use Testors, Not the tube or liquid, the one that is in between in the black plastic container ::) At least that is the plan.
Rigging is just thin super glue.

RAGIII,
With the weathering the "Ecru" underside looks just right. In the past I'm sure you're failure with the debates as what the colour really was.
Some said it had a slight gray-blue tinge to it on aircraft built by some manufactures. Anyway, you've got it right to my eyes. Looking great!
Kevin

I do like that weathering Rick: just enough contrast to be convincing. I just wish I had the courage to try a bit more on my models, but I am afraid of overdoing it.

Still more great work being done here. I've been busy with other stuff but started a SPAD of my own a couple of days ago - all your fault of course 😉 - and I needed some more info on how to paint the fuselage insides. A quick look at your thread here and I could move on. Thanks!

I managed to get two out of the three upper wings mounted using My Modified kit struts although not without some issues. ( Touch Up Required) The Rickenbacker SPAD was another story. I was trying to make adjustments to the alignment and slipped causing both H struts to irreparably shatter! I am now carving replacements from Bamboo as I should have on all three!

First thanks to all for the positive comments. They are appreciated greatly! I feel I need to mention that Only the inner H struts were carved. The outer struts are from the kit! One thing I was pleased with was how well the stain mixture I used, Cherry and Golden Oak, matched the tan acrylic base and oils of the plastic struts. The bindings were CDL rib tapes from one of the WNW kits.
Bob,
I used skewers found in grilling or housewares sections of most grocery and large retail stores. My steps were as follows:
1. Cut a length off slightly longer than the desired strut length.
2. Use a sharp exacto wedged in to split the skewer portion in half( roughly). I was usually able to get two struts from one piece.
3. Turn it over to the round side and again with a sharp exacto blade start carving length wise. It peels off in even layers. I also carved the sides to desired width in the same way.
4. When close to the width desired start the finishing process with a sanding stick on both sides.
5. Round off the edges with the sanding stick.
6. Sand a V shape on each end while getting it to the actual length.
7. Stain and when dry coat with future.
Thanks for the interest! If I had the tools I am convinced that crushed tubing would be better for the rigging process but these will work for My methods ::)

As usual I found another reason to post an update ;D I have added the aileron control rods to all three SPADS but I also came up with an idea for the Luke SPAD. I had a Pegaso Luke Figure and a Copper State French Pilot checking his revolver. Knowing that Luke liked to visit the "Storks" I decided to do a little combination of the figures on a base for Lukes bird. A friendly shooting competition!

Thanks SP! I had originally intended to use the Aviattic Luke figure along with some Aviattic mechanics. After consideration I thought that it was too Much like Mike Norris's Luke build. The idea for using the combination of the Pegaso Luke which was intended to represent the Mythical "Last Stand" in a different way just kind of flowed into My warped Mind 8)

At the local Rick Spad factory workers went on strick for the lack breaks a spoke person says on behalf of the little critters .....

Your project must be getting near the closing stage. The three lined up will only convince the rest of us

I can't get sprue to stretch evenly and consistently to save my life!
Thanks Ken. As for stretching the sprue evenly I don't do too badly but I do eliminate about half of what I actually stretch. Then I usually let about half of that accidentally slip from the tweezers to the carpet while trying to add it to the airframe :o
RAGIII
-
Stretched sprue us always too thin in the middle and too thick at the ends, but there are a couple sections on each pull that are usable. On a 24-30 inch pull, I can usually harvest a couple of usable sections 6-8 inches long from either side of the middle. Plenty usable in 1/72 and most 1/48 single seaters. You also get the advantage of being able to use noticeably thinner line for the control cables. You have to be ruthless in throwing out unusable pieces, otherwise you will be tempted to use them rather than stopping to make more once you get on a roll rigging.
sp
-
Stretching sprue to that length consistently takes some skill and patience Rick. Cracking stuff - good luck with the continuation of this project.
Stephen.

Those look fantastic!! Makes me want to dig mine out and build it.
Thanks again Carl. I tried yet again to add the double lines on one of the SPADS. Total frustration! So I have tried something I hope will help with My issues. I took some double rigging turnbuckles from a leftover Part set for the Nieuport 28. I attached them to the areas giving me issues. I am hoping that this will allow an easier fit and attachment of the Stretched Sprue :-\

Thanks Ken. The pose will be a little "Less Dramatic" when the French Pilot is posed next to him 8) So far I am liking the Valejo acrylics but I have a lot to learn! It is a Shame No one does a Rickenbacker figure to go with his SPAD. I guess I will stick with an "Unknown" USAS pilot posing with #1.

Rick
That rigging looks great so far, light years ahead of what I could do. You have the wire running to the "H" strut leaving on the same angle it arrived on. That is a feat few can accomplish. I have banged my head against my hand all afternoon trying to figure a way to do those "H" struts in metal and I can't see how without expensive custom equipment.
Only thing I can think of is using carved wooden struts and to pin the cross bar with pins long enough to protrude out the front and back. Then use Gaspatch turnbuckles and hook each one over the protruding pin. You might have to use 1/48 size to keep the pin diameter smaller and also so the 4 wires don't stack up too far out of plane. Not real helpful I know, but all I could conjure up.
OTOH those Spads look so darn good, whose going to notice a whip-a-diddle in the rigging. (I know...you will)
sp
-
Rigging those centre struts must have been Bleriot's dig at future modellers! They look fine to me but I agree with Steve- they probably will look an eyesore to you!
Stephen.

Thanks Terri. I am progressing on the rigging and have one of the three close to being finished. As for My experience with painting figures with Acrylics, I really like them. One must consider that it is a different process than using Oils. I have watched a couple of Videos and the one thing that was very different was starting with highlights.I do like the drying time difference but will need to work on the whole "wet" pallet thing. Awesome work Rick. Your Spads show just why these subjects are so popular. The Guynemer Spad is one I've thought of doing too and your model is strong encouragement for me to get going on this one now!
Figures really set off these models so well too as they give us a visual perspective of aircraft size.
Thanks for sharing with the Forum

Fabulous SPADS Rick! I can only hope that my future models of this aircraft turn out nearly as well. A magnificent effort, rewarded with truly fine results. Very well done, indeed!
Best regards,
Bob
Thanks Bob. I am sure when you do a SPAD it will be far better 8)

These are all looking fabulous, Sir!
Top-notch work, real 'shrink-ray and a time machine' stuff.
Especially nice to see it done with middle grade kits, as well.

Triple bravo, Rick. You have done incredibly great job on them. I admire your resolution to tackle such kits. And right on time you did it, seemingly - now to expect fulfilment of Roden's promise and let us see if they realease that up-to-date Spad13.
-
All 3 look amazing and deserve a spot on the front of the shelf, give yourself a pat on the back and have a lie down ;D
-
Beautiful models, Rick, as always. You've shown how a lot of skill, care and attention can turn these old warhorses into museum quality masterpieces. And your build rate.... Do you spend the full 24hrs at the bench? Marvellous results.
Sandy
P.S. I love Danny Kaye standing by his SPAD😃

Stellar builds, Rick! Lovely, just lovely! To see three built like that is very special.... Amazing! Marc.

Well done! Beautiful builds all of them!

Three tremendous builds there Rick. Just making one would have been enough for me - to make three is a real achievement. All are beautifully finished - something to be very proud of.
Stephen.

Beautiful result - all three are very nice SPADs!
And also congratulation for your build report! You managed to fill up 47 pages of entertainment until now 8)

Thanks Stephen your comments are appreciated. Honestly speaking had I not started and built all three at once I probably would have two sitting in the stash unbuilt for years!
