Title: Meng and Roden Fokker DR1: Jasta 4, Jasta 6, and Jasta 11
Post by: RAGIII on September 12, 2020, 08:31:12 AM
So with the SPADS out of the way I am adding another Dual Build. I will be doing Kirschsteins Jasta 6 Striped Optical Illusion and a more obscure Jasta 4 DR1. Not sure which one will be which at this stage. By the way I will still be working on the CSM Nieuport and Roden Pfalz also  ::) After Market stuff includes Aviattic PE, Cowling, and Seat, Eduard and Part PE, and finally a WNW URII engine!

Great to have another MENG build along Rick!

Will be interesting to see how they compare.. is there a big difference from what you see in the boxes?

Two more! How do you do it Rick? I have difficulties enough building one model at a time, not four!

I will still tag along though if you do not mind - some of your techniques are well worth stealing er borrowing.

You need it complicated? ???
At first three SPADs at once, then Nieuport and Pfalz and now in parallel two Dr.I ?
Cool! 8)
I'm sure you will have a lot of fun and we will see a nice result.

Have fun with this new project!

So, I have started cleaning up some of the Major components and comparing to drawings. I am waiting for Ray to approve My request to use some WS drawings with the parts overlaid so today I will just post some comparison photos of the Major parts. First the Reference I am using:

The wings: Roden parts on Top.

Next the tail surfaces, rudder, and axle wing. Roden parts on the left other than the Aileron which has the Roden Part on the bottom:

More close ups of the wings: Meng above Roden.

Lower wings: Meng above Roden.

Right and left fuselage Halves. Roden on the top for each:

Obviously the Meng parts are more detailed. Both kits Match the Drawings in 1/32nd scale featured in Fokker DR1 Jagdstaffeln by GvW and Windsock, with a couple of exceptions on the Roden kit.

Thanks Terri.

I want to emphasize that these were hasty photos and the ultimate comparison will be forthcoming in the Albatros Publications book on building the Fokker DR1 ! This is just to give a general idea of the differences.

Over all there really isn't much of a difference at all . A few small things which should be easy fixes if one chooses to do so .

Shape wise that is certainly true although I have been told there is a significant difference in the circumference of the cowl and forward fuselage. Detail wise the Meng kit is far and away superior. That being said, the Roden kit can be built to a high standard as Many of our Forum Members have shown!

I'm following along on this one, Rick.  As you know, I have built a Roden Dr.1 and have a Meng Dr.1 in the stash.  This is the first modeling subject I have ever bought two of.
I would bet the rudder curvature ended up different on every DR.1 made, as well as on every drawing made, as curves like that (changing radius) are very difficult to reproduce exactly.

I am of course Familiar with your Roden DR1 build. I am sure you will find the Meng kit to be a joy to build. This will be MY 5th Roden DR1 build so My plan is to correct some of the things I just let go by with the other 4  ::)  Now that I have looked the parts over I plan to really start building soon!

Thanks for this comparison! Really helpful for when I get to my Roden kit.
Is it an optical effect, but it seems the Roden rudder is not entirely aligned with the rear fuselage on the drawing? (pointing a bit up?)
The discrepancy on the rudder is smaller then I thought when I read some reviews pointing this out.

You are correct about the Roden rudder being slightly out of alignment. For My build I will use the Encore resin rudder as it is close but a bit oversized so can be carved to a more correct shape.

Roden makes basically Good Kits. Only the introduction of WNW made them look substandard. Had WNW never appeared Roden would have been the standard of 1/32nd scale WW1 and we would have been fine with the kits! JMHO.

Thanks Amigo, I hope to start soon on actually building. I sort of got involved in My other Dual build today  :o By the way, yes I have decided on schemes. I will do the Meng kit as Kirschsteins Stripey Jasta 6 bird and the Roden will be a Jasta 4 DR1 with a white- black- white- black-white sash on the fuselage, and blue tail, cowling, and struts.

Nice comparison Rick:  As said, Roden makes basically a good kit.  I have built two the DR.i's and the last one I enjoyed building.  Some small challenges but an OOB build that turned out better than I thought it would.  It compares favorably to the MENG kit or the Meng Kit compares favorably with the Roden Kit!  I will be watching along as you go through the build.  I am going to finish a D.VII I started back in Wisconsin then hit the Hobby Craft DR.I.  I don't think I have ever seen one done or build log on it.  Should be fun.

Thanks Andreas. I made some small progress yesterday. I did get an answer from Ray Rimell reference the axle wing for DR1 586/17. It will use the narrower chord version so I will try to adapt the full chord version to the Roden kit. Saves a lot of Sanding Time  8)

Nice paint, Rick.
Do I understand correctly that the Dr.1s have that huge T handle on the right side of the cockpit for the pump to pressurize the fuel tank?

Any pictures of the real thing you can post?

I don't think it is a "Pump' to pressurize. My understanding is the  Cross member forming the T is actually a valve handle. It was connected to the throttle and or could be operated manually, and also used like a blip switch. There was a Video on FB a few weeks ago showing it in operation on one of the Replicas. I know it is visible in the photo of the crash of 591/17. I will check for more images. By the way, I think the one in the kit is somewhat oversized but I am not going to change it on this one  8) IIRC there was no need for a Pressurization pump like on Mercedes and other inline engine powered aircraft. (I honestly don't remember why)
RAGIII

PS: Here is a Link to Lloyds Fokker DR1 website showing the aforementioned 591/17

http://www.fokkerdr1.com/images/Dr1-591-17%20crach.jpg

PPS: Looking at the photo again, I am Very Tempted to cut away what is supplied in the kit and replace with My own  ::)

Thanks Fredrik! I do Make silly/simple mistakes! I was not satisfied with the bulkhead using the PE part from Part PE... ::) I had a surplus bulkhead from an old kit so I proceeded to do it myself with stitching from wire. I added a lot of oil weathering as this one represents a former Jasta 11 bird handed down to Jasta 4. THe New one is on the right of the photo.

Thanks also for new picture of the Roden rudder on the drawing, I think I'll sand the attachment part at a slight angle to even out the incorrect looking curves on the forward and lower parts and live with it. Thanks again, I noted this in my instructions when I get to mine one day...

Yes it does Amigo. Not 100% convinced as to accuracy. My Only real misgiving is that Many serious researchers viewed the photos that Richard Alexander viewed and none seem to have come to the conclusion of red primer. Of course there May be More I don't know about. As Ray Rimell seems to be on board with the conclusion I figured I would roll with it  8)

Here is one for You Fredrik  :o

First I took the Gear legs from a scrapped Roden DR1 and carved them to fit the Meng Axle wing. I am sure they will need tweaking but the results are promising!

Next is the Silly Mistake. I took the "Unused" Control stick from the Meng kit and Modified it to the Standard type.Attached it to the Roden floor with No problem. It was then that I realized that the "Unused" stick is the Late Type that probably was correct for 586/17! All I really needed to do was use it on the Meng kit and the one called for in the instructions on the Roden. Oh Well Not much I can do now  ::)

A very Small update: I was Talking to Kreston about using the Meng tailplane. Well Since I had the F1 tail handy I started cutting it down to match the Roden kit. Not much work at all and does look better than Rodens. To make it a perfect fit for the Roden Elevators I would need to remove the section penciled in on the Meng tail and add about 5 thou. to each end. I am debating about that part.

Great work. Will be interested to see the middle wing group in on the Mengnuts. Was the front cockpit attachment broken? About half seem to be turning us that way. Daz

How do you say, "Mix and Match" in German?

Great work Rick. I really like how you use the different parts where they are needed regardless where they came from. Real modeling as opposed to mere assembling.

SO, Just to remind everyone I am doing the Roden DR1 as a Jasta 4 DR1 that was "Handed Down" from Jasta11. It is visible in a distant view in a photo in GvW/Albatros Publications Fokker DR1 Jadgstaffeln book. In the photo there is not a large amount of variation so  My goal is to depict a well worn and somewhat faded/blended streaking. Perhaps even touch up paint was used. The markings would have been recently changed thus a darker area below the crosses. I used Acrylics for the streaking for the first time. I am now Decideing if this is a Pass...or Fail so All Opinions welcomed.

PS: I don't know why but the photo shows the streaking More brown when in reality it is OD Green  ::)

PPS: The tail will be overpainted in light Jasta 4 blue.

I think  your streaking looks great Rick!  I read too that the varnishes used and weathering would give the Green a brownish tint, so to me it looks spot on, I wouldn't change a thing.  I am going to use Tamiya Acrylics on my upcoming DR.I and can only hope it turns out as good as yours.  Very nice Rick!

Rick, your streaking looks good! Not that easy to get it right, and I know that because I'm doing the same now ::)

Which Tamiya paint you use for CDL? For the Fokker I like to have a less yellow, more greenish and your shade looks like that (ok, camera, light and monitor may manipulate the color ...).

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks for commenting Frank! As for the Tamiya CDL I am pretty sure it started as "Buff". I might have mixed in some grey. I used a mix I had sitting on the shelf so I am not 100% sure  ::)

Looking at the two Rick there are clearly tonal differences (but bear in mind Frank's comments), but I think that both are very good. I suspect that in reality different aircraft did look slightly different because paints would have varied and the people painting the streaking would have had different patterns too. So in brief: both get my vote! (And if I ever build a Fokker in the future I know who to send it to for painting!!)

Stephen.

Rick, you managed to keep the streaks in areas, where a huge amount of paint is removed. I tried it, but get quickly an uniform area.

Cheers,
Frank

. Frank, It is a matter of remembering that oils can be worked and then reworked. I remove large areas with a dampened wide flat brush then go back with a narrow brush adding what I want. If I don't like the results I remove and re-do.

PPS: The RODEN decal is working well although it was Brittle!. It is reacting to setting solution and a hair dryer. Other than the chipped portion I am pleased.

RAGIII,
The streaking looks great. I'm wondering whether you found using acrylics easier, harder or the same just different, than the oil paints you have used in the past?

Thanks Kevin. The Acrylics are certainly different than what I am used to! I found I needed to work more quickly and they were just a tad harder to get the look I was after. I worked "wet" and used water and a Filter/wash to thin and remove what I needed to. In the end I am more comfortable with the time that the Oils allow.

Today I painted the undersurfaces using an old Poly Scale color Mix on the Roden Jasta 4 build. I also did the Tail. I hope to add a bit of contrast using oils and another mix of Poly Scale. I decided to replace the Roden decals with ones from WNW that did not require masking over and painting the ends. One thing I can say about the Roden decals, Once they are in place and set with decal solution, THEY ARE SOLID! I was unable to remove all of the decal with Masking Tape and had to resort to sanding and repainting the background!!!!  That being said this is where I am:
RAGIII

PS: One other thing worth Mentioning and this is the Honest Truth. The Roden Decals are brittle. That being said if you can get them in place without chipping or cracking they actually adhere to surface details better than the WNW decals I went with!

Just catching up again. These both look terrific!! Since we're voting (and if THEY were in an election I would vote for these not those other Fokkers) I pick both! Each have their merits. When you say acrylics you do mean artist or tube acrylics right? Not Vallejo or Tamiya etc. The Roden definitely looks more blended. Is that due to having to work faster  and trying to keep the paint wet? Could you put the paint on, level/smooth it and get a more defined streaking without going faster? Less paint on initial application? Have you seen the wet pallets at the art stores? (AK has them too) Its a container with a layer of sponge and a piece of semi absorbent paper. You add water, put the acrylic paint on the paper and it keeps the paint moist for a substantial length of time(days) - that's a lot of questions, sorry, but I see your method having a huge upside compared to oils. Being able to work sooner on a project after paint means a lot. I retire in 12 days (hence the questions) so my preparations are in the works!! - I cant wait to get at my models full time, figure out how to post pics and get something done!!!!!

Rick, I really like your progress, this will be a beautiful Dr.I!

I need to look into one of those "Wet Pallets" for sure!
You can make one yourself easily!
Take a plastic CD box, the clear cover.
Put in one or two layers of kitchen roll paper cut to size.
Put on top a layer of baking paper (also available in white)
You can slide the papers under the 4 halfround tabs, or fix it around with paper clips.
If you now made the lower kitchen paper wet, you have your wet pallet - cheap, easy and working.
I do not invented it, I read about it somewhere.

Cheers,
Frank

It's looking good Rick.  Matching the stripes can be a real challenge as the angle of the stripe makes the top wider than the angle of the stripe on the upper part of the fuselage.  I wrestled with that when I did mine in Udets markings.  Just a little tweaking of the stripe made it all come together.  You are doing stellar work and I am following, maybe not commenting a lot but following none the less.  Remember, we're in this together.

I have painted( Mostly) the band on the fuselage of the Roden DR1. I used decal for the black portions. The band needs a bit of touch up.  Slowly getting towards mounting the wings. I hope to work on the re do of the Meng kit stripes later today.

Thanks Fredrik! I spent the rest of today masking and re-painting the Jasta 6 DR1. I like the results much better! On the other hand when painting the tail I forgot to add one small piece of tape....white will need to be touched up  8)

I have had to catch up with these builds Rick, and I am bowled over by the stripey looks! Both models are very impressive indeed - particularly the one with wings and fuselage. Your painting skills really are second to none. I also think that the WNW engines are mini-masterpieces and make a super addition to any model.

I worked on the Roden kit and have modified/cut apart the Roden landing gear legs to fit the Wide chord Axle wing from the Meng DR1. I also began to work on the Spandaus. Finally the Aviattic cowling painted and sitting in place.

I also installed the Machine Guns, wheels, Rudder, and cowling on the Meng DR1

Yes, down to three and thanks for the comment! Today I did a small amount on the Triplanes to get back in the Saddle so to speak. Rudders and rudder crosses added to both. I used the wheels from an old Roden Albatros DIII(OAW) for the larger diameter on the Roden DR1. In addition I used a repurposed PE part from the Toms Model Works Pfalz set as the frame for the inspection window on the Roden upper wing. I had a spare wood panel from a WNW DVII so used that as it really can't be read! Finall, I started detail painting on the MG's and other things.

As always thanks for your support Stephen. This was going to be a progress report on mounting the upper wing on the Meng kit. I managed to break a cabane strut. No big deal I can order the brass struts to replace it. Then I was holding the kit by the upper wing at the aileron. Aileron separated and once again a Fatal crash. I am going to close out both of MY build logs even though two still survive. I just don't have it in Me to continue.

That's a real nasty development Rick, the gods of modeling have certainly not smiled on you of late! Don't give up, I'd recommend you order the brass struts and during the wait enjoy the break while two very good things happen .......
one, you get your mojo recharged and two, two beautifully finished models emerge from the temporary disaster you've been dealt! Oh yes, the "wait" must include an hour or two sitting at the "Bench" working on a couple of really cold brews ........ good for the soul doncha know!

Rick, I am so sorry to hear about the damage.  I have been enjoying your builds immensely and watch out for them every time I visit here.
If it seems too much, just put them aside for now and enjoy the next project.  You may find that Meng and Roden have a parts replacement service for the pieces you need.  If not, you still have the originals to use as templates.  And there might well come a day where you are able to use them as patterns to make your own replacement parts.

Rotten deal, Rick. Looking back they were coming along nicely.

Can I just say one of the reasons I don't publish day by day progress reports is that too many times fate intervenes with a deus ex machina like this. I wait till it's safely finished - probably why I post few current builds! (Other reasons are my snail's pace and poor photography skills!)
I'm sure in a few days you'll be ready to wrest success from the jaws of defeat.

I am not sure where to begin here so if this comes out looking rather Random so be it.

First, I never intended to "Leave the Forum" The Forum is too much a part of My Daily routine and I Love this place and Most of all the Modelers. I did however, fully intend to STOP posting build logs. A few things have happened that changed My Mind. After a few days of getting over the second disaster I started feeling better about Modeling. The Major Reason  is this Forum and especially the Community of Modelers involved. I can't say enough about the responses and what they have done to Inspire Me. I am but a small part player here...No One is More important than the Community!

So, Having thought things over and due to a couple of PM's  I received I am going to re-open this log!  Thank You Dave W for your Messages!  I also received a Message from rayb24. This Message is the One that really showed Me How Generous and supportive this Community is. I am posting a copy of the text for all to see.

"Hey Rick, i was following your build, i have 3 Meng dr1’s and your welcome to one. No charge, you can either use the parts to fix what you have or start again.. i’ve been where you are with a few built(nearly) models. So no the feeling."

Ray

I accepted Ray's offer and of course When the opportunity arises I will Pay His Generosity forward! I will build the Meng kit in the intended Jasta 6 scheme and hopefully make it even better. I also will finish the Roden build as another Forum Member Pete supplied Me with a Lot of aftermarket stuff to make it better! I also remembered that this Roden kit was a "Prize" for My Participation in the Des Delatore GB. It wouldn't be fitting to stop the build log!!

Now, in Typical RAGIII style I will add a third DR1 to the build, another Roden kit using Parts and pieces scavanged from the wreck  ::)  Photo soon.

Thank You All for being a Part of the Community and a Daily Inspiration!

Thanks Gary! Here are the first photos of the second Roden DR1. This one I intend to do as DR1 502/17 from Jasta 11. I was able to salvage the Meng interior "Almost" in tact! I haven't worked on the other kits much but I began to wonder if I could mate the Meng interior with the Roden kit. After some sanding and filing this is the results to date:

Still needs tweaking and I will need to remove the instrument and fuel fillers to make it work.

I share your enthusiasm about this Community of Modelers. It is heart warming, and it kept me going in the early moments of my HP V/1500 build in moments of despair...

Rick,

My visits to the forum are very erratic at the moment so I have only just read about your second disaster....... I am lost for words, the more so since the streaking on the Fokker is truly exceptionally good. I am so pleased to read that you have managed to recover some of your equilibrium too - not easy given the circumstances, but commendable none the less.

It is sooo good to see that you have started again - after all disasters should not be barriers - rather challenges to be overcome. (Not that that view is easy to takejust after a major blow). Please do not leave us on this forum - you are such a highly valued member. Do what you have done - go away for a few days to calm down and then come back and show us how well you can make models which undoubtedly inspire the rest of us. I am sure that I write for most when I state that I too have nearly given up - as on the DH1A earlier this year when I knocked the top wing off.....-I nealry binned it but not quite, and I am pleased that I dd not.

I am ceetain that you are going to present us with not two but THREE excellent triplanes in the not too distant future, and do you know what? I can't wait!

Stephen.

Thanks Stephen, Like I said I Never Intended to leave the Forum but the responses gave Me New Hope to continue posting builds! So in that spirit here is the latest on the Roden Jasta 4 bird: I have begun to weather using oils, burnt sienna, burnt umber, gold ochre, and black. My thought is that this is an older airframe passed down from Jasta 11 to Jasta 4. Therefore I have gone just a Tad heavier on the weathering.

Just catching up. The ups and downs seem to have swung back to very much up!! Glad you're back on stride!! Model building has always been an escape for me - what happens in that world stays put. A disaster or frustration in a build does not ruin a day it just gets set aside. There are no "have to" or "I must" simply do it or don't. No one is DEPENDING on a build. Yes, there's a financial cost to this hobby but whether the project is completed or not - that money is spent. There is certainly a story now to the Fokker F up that down the line you will probably smile at!! I have watched your progress, the talent, the ability and your enthusiasm for the project at hand and although sympathetic to a catastrophic set back I draw further inspiration from you refocusing and approaching the problem from a new angle. Nicely done!! Crisis averted - proceed......

Hi Rick I read the last dramatic posts on this thread and I understood that COVID could have not been the worst plague of this fantastic 2020. The forum without your works is like a cinema without movies (I am joking and don't want to diminish the great modeller skills of the many other great modelers here).

BTW I am so happy to see you biting the bullet again and the result is another beautiful DR1.

I am nearing completion on the Roden Jasta 4 DR1. I have finished weathering the undersides and fuselage and just need to add a bit to the upper surfaces. Next up will be rigging and then adding the small breakable parts like the step and hand holds. I think it is appropriate while witing on the Meng "Replacement" to note a few comparisons.

 Roden:

After 15 years the Roden kit is still pretty nicely done. A few errors of Omission are evident but honestly when the kit was designed Most had No Idaea!

Things I see needing correction:

1. Sand off "Most of the triangular panels on the wing upper surfaces. Honestly some trace "Might"  be visible on the original
2. Do not use the fuel pump on the right fuselage side. This was a tube and valve that was connected to the control stick to more or less "Blip" the engine.( WNW /Meng are the first to get this right) Not generally known when Roden issued their kit.
3. Add some Nail holes to the wing ribs on the upper surface. Looks better even if exaggerated.
4, Correct the gear location on the leading edge.
5. Change the location of the spar inspection panel on the upper wing
6. The tires are too small in diameter( This was only recently discovered). They would be fine if building an F1.
7. The Cowl needs replacing or correction.
8. Fill in the depression on the horizontal tail surfaces( Although honestly there is a depression near the leading edge)
9. Add whatever cockpit details like the triangular panel are needed per your preferences
10.Add the fabric panel above the rear bulkhead.
11. No access hatch on the underside. Use Aviattic PE or Make your own.
12. No stitching on rear fuselage. Use Part, Eduard, or Archer stitching to add.

One thing Roden did get right is the recessed ribs on the undersides of the wing. Ray Rimell suggested adding a thinly stretched sprue piece to enhance the detail. Also the kit is Sturdy, No worries about breaking struts  8)

Meng:

Basically 15 years of improved Mold technology and Information.  Superior in Most respects it does have drawbacks.
1. The Plastic is DIFFERENT! Softer yes, but also more brittle  ::)
2. Tolerances are tight! Perhaps more so than WNW.
3. Because of #2 be SURE you do not Try to Force anything into place! Especially wing Ties and Cabanes!
4.Instrument decals are not very good
5. One Must either have knowledge of their intended subject or do research as the instructions really fall short of giving info on what parts should be used.

So that being said this is where I am on the Roden Jasta 4 build. Weathering of the undersides and Fuselage are done. Just need to pastel the upper surfaces and rig. Then the inevitable touch up:

I agree as well with your comments on that one and particularly on the instructions and plastic. Thanks Terri. I had difficulty getting to sleep last night so I have now buttoned up the DR1. Roden kit with a slightly modified Meng interior. I also made the slight modification needed to use the Meng Tail Surfaces. Upper fuselage seam was filled with Talcum powder and superglue mix so hopefully it will never re appear  8) I hope No other Modeler winds up with a spare Meng interior but at least we know it can be done  ::)

Thanks Ken. The Jasta 11 build should go pretty well but May be delayed as Aviattic is currently Out of Stock on the DR1 PE. By that time I should have the replacement Meng kit to start doing Kirschsteins Jasta 6 bird again  ::)

Thanks Terri. I have finished the tweaks, glued the mid wing in place, stripped the Meng tail plane painting and attached, and added Archer Fine Transfers stitching to the Jasta 11 Roden kit.

Thanks Ken.  I know I have confused things with deleting/crashing one kit and adding another. So here is a recap: 1. The Meng kit that was destroyed had Archer Stitching. 2. The Jasta 4 Roden kit has the Part PE Stitching. 3. The New Jasta 11 build has Archer Stitching as seen in the previous post  ::)

Thanks Steve I appreciate your comments. I agree completely about the Roden kit!  I have filled and sanded the seams on the "Mengenstein" kit. Actually the Only reason I used the Meng interior vs the Roden was that it was assembled , rigged, and painted. Saved a bunch of time. In some respects the Roden kit interior offers more possibilities. Having the complete fuel tank and engine bearers it lends itself well to opening up that lower panel from the Aviattic PE set.

Thanks Terri, Steve, and Ed. I appreciate the comments. I have changed the camo on the Roden kit....More on that later. I also changed My mind on the aircraft I will model. Still Jasta 11 but 545/17 of Hans Weiss. In the Meantime a few notable points about the Meng and Roden kit: First lets examine Ailerons: There has been much said about the Roden kit and it's ailerons. So lets exaamine the options. The Fokker DR1 basically had three types:

1. Fokker F1 Type
2. Early type. Similar to the F1 but with reduced chord on the balances.
3. Late style

Roden offers an accurate example of # 2 and 3. Meng offers accurate examples of #1 and 3.

So if one wants to do an F1 from the Roden kit you would need the Cutting Edge or Encore resin Ailerons representing that type.
If you want to do an Early DR1( Mostly Early Jasta 11, then the Roden early style is fine. Rodens Late style is also fine for all of the rest!

If building the Meng kit as an F1 their F1 style aileron is perfect. If doing an Early DR1 then use the Late style as a template to reduce the chord of the balance. The late style used on Most DR1's is again, perfect.

Thanks to rayb24 I now have another Meng kit that I received yesterday. I am wasting No Time getting underway  8) I noticed some detail that I had overlooked on My first build: The leading edge of the wings shows VERY SUBTLE detail where the ply covering is located. Easy to miss this and it explains why Ray Rimell said to" Mostly"  sand off the leading edge details on the Roden kit  :o  So moving along I have painted the Streaking on the Meng middle and lower wing. I also realized that No Seams would prevent me from painting the forward fuselage streaking on Kirschsteins DR1 so I went ahead and did so.

Thanks for the explanation of the ailerons, Rick.  Do you happen to know the numbers for the early batch vs the late batch?

Ken, I don't have the numbers at hand. I will check My references but I think the book that probably best explains the ailerons is one I don't have. Paul Lehmens Fokker Dr1. I am certain all will be included in Ray's two volume books on building the DR1. Like I said, "Most" of the early style were found in Jasta 11. Some like 144/17 had both early and late. Finally one could almost substitute "Standard" for Late as it was the most common  type.
RAGIII

PS: I have been looking through My DR1 reference. All I can say for sure is that the "Early" style seems to be limited to Jasta 11 as I stated before. As for serial numbers they seem to be interspersed with those carrying the "Standard" aileron. As an example 154/17 has the early style but 139/17 has the later. It also appears that some of those delivered before the failure had F1 type ailerons but Gontermans 115/17 has the later "Standard" version. Perhaps someone with more knowledge can clear things up  ::)

I made quite a bit of progress on both DR1 kits today. First I added the instrument decals from Aviattic sheet shown in the previous post to the Meng interior. Just a reminder here, if you use them remember that Aviattic decals are backed with clear so paint the appropriate color to back them. Second the sheet is a solid backing so you will need to trim as close as possible to the decal. After applying the instruments I glued the Meng fuselage together...No photos yet.

I also have finished the streaked camo on the Roden kit....for the third time. I really didn't like the revisionist scheme so went back and tried to remove the brown and add more green. The results were not satisfactory  >:( So I stripped all of the paint, re sprayed a beige-ish grey CDL base, then went back and did the streaking with oils. So since I changed the scheme three times it is only fair that I have now changed My mind on Markings three times. I went from 502/17 to 545/17, and have decided on an Early DR1 flown by Werner Steinhauser, Jasta 11 of course  ;D This gave me the opportunity to use the Early style ailerons.

RAGIII

Note: According to info from Achim Engels the Tachometer was Not under the ammo box where Mengnuts have it. He says it was attached to the side frame.

I used a soft cloth with Brake Fluid and carefully rubbed the surfaces. The oils came off easily and the acrylic base only took about 30 minutes. . Then I use dish detergent to wash off the oily residue. I sprayed about an hour later then did the streaking later in the afternoon. When things go well the streaking only takes about 5 minutes per surface  ::)

Rick on speed! Your Triplane show here is unbelievable!

How do you strip the paint without damaging your work?
Willem, I have made also good experience with normal alcohol (in german "Spiritus", a cheap undrinkable alcohol for cleaning) for acrylic paints, e.g. Gunze Hxxx, Tamiya or Mr. Paint. Even with oil stripes on top the alcohol goes a bit trough are solves the paint below.
If I so not rub to strong with cotton tab my Alclad Primer survives such attack.

I suggest to use a cheap model kit for testing paints, airbrush, brushes and ... cleaning ;)

Cheers,
Frank

Nice to see them both side by side. I have one question,  the elevator of Jasta 6 is up. Is that possible when the plane stands on the ground?

Excellent progress Rag, that Steinhauser scheme looks really cool and creates a nice contrast with the camouflage. You got yourself a truly unique Dr.I here.

Thanks for all of the comments. They are appreciated! I haven't done a lot due to the Holiday but did manage to add the lower fuselage panel from the Meng kit to MY Roden build. I also painted the CDL background for the lower wing crosses. Finally I painted the eyes on the cowling. Still some tweaking needed  8) All of this is on the Roden Jasta 11 bird.

Thanks Marc! I actually made My decision although it involved a bit of a re-paint on the left side of the original wing. I Liked the results and added the upper wing to the finished steps.

Looking Good Rick:  I am looking forward to seeing your Steinhauser completed.  I am doing it but with the Balkankreuz and the yellow square with red "X".  The eyes on the cowling look as good as the ones I have and I used a mask on one the decal from the Hobby Craft kit for the other, not sure which one I will use.  The striped one looks good as well.  I like your streaking and I will end up trying that on my next DR.I build.  Glad to see you had a nice Christmas holiday and look forward to more from you in 2021.

Thanks for the kind comment  8)  ::) In answer to your question as to My preference I will say I prefer the Meng kit with one caveat. The Roden kit is awesome for being 0ver 15 years old in it's Molding Process! Having built 5 counting the Steinhauser bird , If I had another in the stash I would happily build it! The fact that I was able to easily adjust so many Meng parts to fit is a testament to just how good Rodens rendition was way back then. Look at Marc/ Monty's build and you can get an idea of what can be done without using aftermarket parts, just Old School Modeling. In case you missed it the first Roden kit in this build was finished a while back:

Here is the teaser I promised. I have painted both props, painted the control horns on both, touched up a few things, and added a spent shell chute to the Roden kit using an Aviattic item. This should be one of the last updates. Next up weathering both, then rigging and final touch up.

Great builds and I'm picking up a lot of tips for my 1/48 Eduard Dr.1's.

Quick question:  On Kirschstein's striped Jasta 6 a/c.   How did you handle the underwing cross fields?  Did you use a slightly different hue of underside blue or just go the same across the whole wing?  I'm just thinking of what was done on the original a/c when the underside crosses on CDL fields were modified.

TIA

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I went with a slightly lighter blue figuring it was fresh vs the bluish turquoise I used for the base color. One could make an argument the other way and use a darker blue figuring the paint faded with age. It is your call. I went lighter because Many feel the blue went with a slightly darker turquoise tint due to the dope overcoat and yellowing with age.   ::)
RAGIII

PS: I also brushed the lighter blue on using an OLD bottle of Polyscale I had on hand  8)

Thanks for the reply.  Your approach and reasoning makes sense to me and I will use a similar scheme when I get to the painting stage

A small update. I have been working on the Encore Boelke figure from the Albatros DII. I have changed out heads replacing the Encore Boelke with a Generic Head from Manta Figurines.

RAGIII,
Looking great and the figure has what I would call a very natural stance.
I looks like he’s a bit shy about getting photographed by the press.

I think figures look real easy to paint but they're not. It's real hard to paint figures right but you nailed it.
