Eye bling !

Alexis

Thanks Alexis!

Wow, Rick!  You have managed a very realistic and varied finish on that sucker.  It has depth and delicate changes in tones.  You made a potentially dull/boring finish into an interesting gobsmacking one.  Just lovely...

Dan

Thanks Dan, Greatly appreciated!

Really nailed it Rick,

Very effective use of oils!

I miss a couple of evenings and two models go from being half finished to nearly complete!

The tones on both are super Rick - they could so easily look the same but you have managed to introduce colour variations which make them subtly but distinctly different.

Both birds are very nice so far, but I prefer the red nose!

I hope you are able to finish them without those "happy little accidents". Good luck!

Cheers,
Frank
PS: I think I will do one SPAD in Shamrock livre.

Thanks Frank. Yesterday I managed to glue the upper wing onto the Lafayette bird. The RFC one was a different story  ::) I am hoping to get it fixed later today!

PS: I would Love to see you do the Shamrock SPAD!

So, I intimated earlier that there could be an issue with one of the SPAD builds. As it turns out I have to do some scratch building of struts. This was totally My fault as always so do not think it is any way related to the kit!!!!! That being said the other SPAD, The Lafayette Bird,  went pretty much flawlessly. I have now mounted all of the struts and next up is some touch up and then rigging.

I like how this is turning out, Rick.
Are all the markings on this plane?  Maybe you discussed this before and I missed it.

They both are looking really nice!! When I think of a SPAD, I always think of an US Aero Squadron marked plane and not the French or British. They look just as pretty in those markings as well.

Thanks Ken. As for markings this is all it gets. Pretty plain and standard Scheme other than the nose  8)

Thanks. As for Me I like the British and French schemes as Much as the USAS. If I get the 19 squadron bird up to snuff I will have  some of all of the above in the case!

I have not spent much bench time on the SPADs this week but thought I would post a small update. First a little better photo of the SPA 124 bird. ( I haven't touched this one at all since the last update)

Now for the full story on the RFC SPAD. After successfully mounting the upper wing on the Lafayette SPAD I went to the RFC bird next. I used the same procedure but managed to break a couple of the cabanes loose. So I put some glue on them, got them aligned and tried again. The wing went wobbly and this time three struts detached. So I went back to the days of My Youth and figured I would add more glue. I let it (Dry) for an hour then tried again. Still wobbly so I , (yes you guessed it) added more glue. You have  probably figured out that by now I had melted the attachment points on the fuselage and struts to the pint that there was nothing but a soggy area left where there was once plastic.  I ended up removing the mess from the fuselage and now I am  figuring out how to proceed. I also sent an email to Roden asking if I could purchase replacement cabanes. If I don't get them in a few weeks I will go back to scratchbuilding them. My own Stupid Fault!

I have No IDEA where the Roden Nieuport 28 came from   :D

I ended up painting the fuel and oil tank on the 28 blue and added the PE throttle, and instruments from PART then added the bracing cables.  Can't be seen at all  ;D

PS: The Peach Basket seat is Aviattic and the belts are made from paper and wire.
