Superb Lance - a masterpiece and this is certainly my favourite WNW build to date. I'm going to have to try this wood carving one day - I have a huge stockpile of wood from my ship modelling days - what timbers did you use here?

Cheers

Alistair,
Thanks for looking and commenting. I'm still using wood veneer from a sample pack I bought years ago and the sheets aren't labelled. Only about 25% of the stock is useable and I'm running out of good straight grain and hard wood stock. I just choose the right color contrast from what's useable but will have to go shopping for more soon.
Cheers,
Lance

First class carving of the propellor Lance. I too must try using veneer for propellors if I build any more large scale models.

Stephen.

Oh Lance, the LVG biplane is a beauty!

but lots of red stuff on the bench
I hope you recover soon.
Yes, can be a bit dangerous trying to cut hard wood with sharp blades, that's why I prefer a carpenter's plane and sanding.

Your dark wood seems to be mahogany. This I tried but in 1/48 it has to much grain, so I do not use it. Some dark fruitwood is a better replacement.

If you need another prop hub - Proper Plane sell also hubs alone.

This will be a great model after all you careful work on it! :-*

Cheers,
Frank

Thanks Stephen and Frank. I hope to locate a source for more veneer on line, some of that "pear" that you use, Frank, would be perfect. For the laminated props with a very high contrast I can source light pine stock locally but as you point out mahogany, the darker shade I have, often has too much and a very "open" grain.

Cheers,
Lance

Hi Lance
For wood supplies try here: https://www.syrenshipmodelcompany.com/milled-lumber.php

Boxwood is an amazing timber - very tight grained and brilliant for carving - probably the very best there is. You could mix this in with Swiss Pear for contrast?

Cheers
Alistair

Looking great Lance, well done. I should drag mine out of the stash and continue with it, been over a year since. Regards Pete in RI

I hope to locate a source for more veneer on line, some of that "pear" that you use, Frank, would be perfect.
Lance, I was hoping too that someone knows a source on your side of the ocean ;) I only know sources in Europe, but the veneer packs are often huge and heavy so end up with high shipping costs.

The source Alistair posted, seems to be a good one. Boxwood is available as veneer, something I have not found in Europe, and also in different thickness. May be you need in 1/32 more thick layers than me. Pear available also in all forms.

Another great stuff seems to be "Alaskan Yellow Cedar", a wood which is not available here (I found something on ebay for guitars, but shipment from canada). I found a great description here (for the german capable readers). It is easy workable and very uniform.

Lance, you should give it a try too. Please let me/us know, if this wood is a option for our propellers.

Cheers,
Frank

Thank you Pete, very much appreciated!
Frank,
I'm going to place an order soon, probably with a sample of the tree types you mention. I'll do a post and some photos when it arrives. I th ink this may be a great source, especially for this side of the world!
Cheers,
Lance
