Ian,  I’m glad you’re getting a much needed vacation. Looking forward to seeing the DH dual build as well.  I am kind of disappointed to see this one put off though. Such beautiful and inspirational work you are doing with it!  But the anticipation will make it all the more appreciated when you do get back to work on it.  Thanks for sharing your work.

Due to a total lack of mojo I decided to pull this out again and take another look at getting the parts I need printed. I made some improvements to the cylinders (added the rings around the barrels) and header tank (reduced the size of the feed tubes and reshaped them) and reprinted those, along with the tail and its redesigned printing braces, and the steering wheel. It looked promising at the first try, but one of the supports on the tail failed so I lost some of the extension bar on one side., and I noticed that the indents for the induction/exhaust are not deep enough on no. 1 cylinder so those were deepened.

Here's what I got the first time. Supports were adjusted and they are all now printing again.

Hopefully the second try will yield useable parts!

Thanks for looking in,

Ian

That is impressive 3D work in this tiny scale. Glad to see some progress here.

I'm glad to see you are continuing building the Taube.

As I said before, I love the design of this type of aircraft.

Cheers,
Willem

Thanks for the positive comments, gents, much appreciated!

I have working slowly (better than not at al!) on this again and have reprinted the main parts with improved supports. The tail printed well but there was a slight warp along the rear edge after it dried out. I beefed up the supports again and the result looks good enough to use now - as long as I don't break it removing the supports!

Just for fun, here's one of the earlier, warped, prints with the kit tail!

Definitely worth all the effort!

The engine also came out well, but again needed some extra supports on the ends to stop it curling. A simple enough cure, and I'm very happy with how it's turned out.

With a bit of paint on it, the detail stands out nicely. I really wasn't expecting those tiny rocker arm mounts to print that well!

Paint has also been thrown at various other small parts. Seen here are the seats, engine inlet manifolds, gravity tank, fuselage fuel tank, control wheel, and engine block. Missing are the coolant tanks which were painted copper.

I've also made a start on the fuselage interior. The front half on this model was aluminium, with fabric only on the rear half.

That's all for now. I'm on hols with family back in England and Guernsey for the next 2 weeks, but then you're used to no updates so pretty much business as usual!

Thanks for looking in!

Fret ye not, I'm still here!

Many thanks for all the positive feedback too!

Back from Telford and into the real world again - even more so following the extremely unexpected success in the competition hall this year. I had taken a couple of older builds to "fill the tables", with absolutely zero expectation of any recognition of any sort, so you imagine the shock when I found that my Eduard Sopwith Baby had not only won Gold in class, but also the Wings and Strings Award for best 1:72 scale aircraft from WWI! I still think there were plenty of better models there, but I wasn't one of the judges, so my sincere appreciation goes to all who were!

Special mention also to the guys of the Great War SIG, particularly Steve Cox and Paul Thompson who, as always, provided good banter and some fabulous models!

Anyway, Not too much to see so far but a lot of progress on designing and tweaking 3d parts for this. I decided the cylinders on their own wasn't going to work, so the top half and nose of the crankcase has been done, along with test printing for fit, and detail added. I have also redesigned the coolant header tank as plonker here forgot that radiators are usually included in the plumbing, so the coolant tank doesn't connect to only the front and rear cylinder heads!

Some extra detail has also been added to the cockpit, and the control wheel has had its rigging lines attached.

So that's where it stands now, more to come when it happens!

Thanks for looking in!

Great to see this moving on. I wonder how well this one will do at Telford when it's finished.

Good to see you back on this one Ian, it's looking really good. Hopefully we won't have to wait another three years to see it at Telford..... ;)

It was good to see you at Telford and congrats on your awards. The judging at Telford is always a bit random, so just enjoy whatever you got! It's good to support  the competition as there are dedicated classes in the competition for WWI models, and that's something worth keeping alive IMO.

Looking terrific Ian. Of course, the 3D printed stuff is Voodoo or some kind of Witchcraft to Me  8) I enjoy watching your processes!
