I've run a few test prints of both the engine and coolant rank, and made a few tweaks to both. These mainly consisted of reprofiling the coolant tank plumbing and lowering the tank by 1mm, and thickening the pushrods a tad to make them a tiny bit less fragile. I may make a few more adjustments just to help fit and alignment of the tank.

It fits too, after a little gentle filing of the fuselage, and snipping off the front engine mounts. I'm not going to print it without those as I foresee the need for further Benz B.II engines in the future. I will add the lower crankcase for those if needed.

I think I'll reshape the ends of the coolant tank, too, and make them rounded instead of pointed.

So that's it for now.
Thanks for looking in!

Thanks Nigel! It measures 17mm including the little mounts I added at the back for the coolant pipes!

I've also made the changes I mentioned, and I think I now have a final, useable part! Here's how it looks in its final guise:

This one is slightly malformed in that the exhausts are a little bent, that's why I used it as the test part for the fit. The others are all straight (at the moment)! Theres more room now in front of the observer's cockpit after the small change in length and end shape which will give me room to fit his windscreen.

Now to get some paint on it!

Thanks for looking in!

That's a lot of work Ian, but the results are terrific  :)

Wow, that looks amazing. Those push rods are impressive, I've seen 1/32 prints that struggle with details like that. Vice work!

Nigel, vice work? Explains a lot.  He coerces spiders, I expect.

Although, actually, it's phenomenal. Just a suggestion though: get it installed quickly, before you become dissatified with the disparate detail of the kit and end up printing a complete new set of parts to accompany the tail and engine...........

Ian, that is seriously impressive work you are doing on this kit.  If you ever consider marketing update packs for this model, I would certainly be interested. I have two of these in my collection I would purchase for.

Thanks to all for the positive feedback!
Tim, I have thought about it, but I need to be able to guarantee the quality. I may well do it, not just for this model, but the DH 4 and 9 too, plus any future projects. It's "definitely a possibility"!  ;D

Just found that you are back to this one Ian. That engine has blown my mind - I had to lie down after looking at it. I built this kit over a decade ago and did not have the skills at the time to replace the engine, but even if I had done it would not have been within a mile what you have done. Brilliant!

The 3D printing is amazing.

Slow progress on this one, mainly due to a total loss of mojo, but also to my clumsiness...

The interior was finished off. I wasn't sure if I should add the control wheel first or later, but decided that since it had control wires attached which needed to be threaded through holes in the cockpit sides it would be best to do it first.

It was at that point that I dropped it on the tiled floor, damaging both the engine and control wheel.
Bother, I said. (well, the first 2 letters were the same, at least)

The engine was replaced, I'll leave the control wheel until later, as the column is fine, I just need to add a new wheel.

Then it was time to glue the fuselage together.

There's quite a bit of work to do on the top seam, and I'll probably reskin it too to sharpen up the longeron detail. The underside is v-shaped for some reason, so that was treated differently -
I added a false bottom from plastic sheet.

It will be trimmed up and fettled properly once dry. I also dropped it again and broke off the top of the front rocker. I can't open it up to replace the engine again, but I think I will be able to get away with it behind the rest of the detail. If I drop it again, I may have to chop the nose off to allow me to replace the engine and refit the whole nose later....

Thanks for looking in!

This one is turning into a bit of a slog Ian, but it looks great. Wirth persevering, provided of course you don't drop it again....... ;)
