Evening builders,

Tonight I made some headway with the internal structure. Starting at the engine bearers, I used a darker base coat with a wet streaking effect. Also in the shot is the pilots floorboard, really lucked out on that panel.

The rest of the bulkheads where lightly grained and varnished, the MG bulkhead, last (2) shoats is very difficult to grain because of the many protrusions on the part. Not very happy with it, I need to hand grain it perhaps.

Magnificent wood work, Ryan!  Very convincing.

I'll repeat that...  Wood looks good!

I must admit...  the moment I learn  that the film was responsible for those dark-wood Albatrosses, I was highly disappointed.

Hi Ryan
You are on your way to becoming a master of plastic woodwork. I'm deeply impressed and we need a tutorial!

Could you explain Gaz, I'm not sure I understand.

Thanks Alistair, hardly a master just trial and error till it looks good.

Technique I'm trying to master is what I call "wet graining", this is how I did the pilot's floor board and engine bearers. The process is just like oil paint graining except you let the brush or foam float over the surface instead of applying a lot of pressure as you drag. The oil is also a bit wetter than you would normally grain with, I hope this makes sense.

it works best with flat surfaces.

Thanks RAG.

Tonight I edge grained the sides of the bulkheads using Tamiya Brown Panel Liner. The idea being the cut edges would be darker as they would absorb more varnish.

Kinda even looks like plywood.

in conclusion I stripped the MG bulkhead, I wanted another shot at graining it.

I put myself in the front row ... ;D... I'm also building the same kit already for a month and a half now but being my first biplane I'm going very very slowly and I started from the engine that I would like to detail .... beautiful work on the wood!

Ryan,
Just a word of caution; ensure you don't leave any paint/stain on the outside edges of your formers/bulkheads. The tolerances on these kits are so small that a coat of paint will adversely effect the fit of the assembly. Ask me how I know this?? :-[ :-[
Great work so far, you are really taking a detailed and patient approach to this Build. The floorboard staining really caught my eye, nicely done and I'm enjoying following your progress.
Cheers,
Lance

Certainly will Lance, thanks for the warning, I stand ready to scrape and sand so they will fit!

I do like to paint till I get it right (to my eye), for example I have stripped the fuselage once, that pesky bulkhead now 3 times!

In fact if I don't strip anything i'm probably doing something wrong.

And yeah the floor board was pure luck!

Got a little more done this weekend.

First up was the radiator bulkhead, this was the part I had stripped earlier, just not satisfied with it.

Well very satisfied now, the cockpit side was done with oils in my now usual method.

Red Baron by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr

The engine side was more difficult, I tried some hand graining near the top, the radiator cover most of this.

Red Baron by The 3rd Placer, on Flickr

Though probably not entirely correct, I kept the unique graining I created on the small instrument panel.

Some final work was on the MG drums, in Testor's Non Buffing Aliminum.

Thanks for looking.
