Gaz,
My initial thought on re-doing the tail was "leave it as is" however I believe the new version is far better and more closely matches the photos Dave provided. I also believe that "scale effect" is at play here; this improved version eliminates the "toy like" impression of the original ........ nicely done!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks guys!  Still not really sure how I feel about some of the surfaces.  But I think I'm just going to use a filter to blend the tones into softer demarcations.  Will do it with the wings, too.

Nice work so far, Gaz. Good luck with your new airbrush. It looks like you've got it pretty well sorted out. Well Done!  8)
Cheers!

That looks really excellent to my eye. The ridging between the red and green might be worn down by gentle rubbing with tissue paper?

What is the make of your new airbrush?

Cheers,
Alistair

Thanks Gaz
I'll have to consider that airbrush - already have an Iwata but not that fine.

Look forward to your model updates.

Cheers

Hi Everyone,
I had to set the Albatros aside while I finished up a Valentine for a group build elsewhere.  But today I came back to work on a few of the things that cause me some trepidation.

I did some painting on the fuselage that iswn't really photo worthy, and then I began to reshape the spinner and assemble the kit Spandaus.

When I built my Roden Albatros, I used Gaspatch guns.  They were awesome, but the jackets were still thicker than scale.  So, I resolved to use the supplied PE and a set of drill bits that go from 1mm to 10mm to roll them.

They didn't come out perfect, but I'm happy enough with the result.  Before I add the top wing, I'll use some metal pigments to add highlights.

I partially filled the inside of the spinner with 5-second-fix UV glue.  Then I went to the Dremel stand to begin reshaping with a large engraving bit at 5k RPM.  After that it came down to file and sandpaper.

I'm a bit happier with the new shape, but will double check everything once I have the cowl plates on the fuselage.   I hope I don't have to do more to it, but you never know till you get there.

Thanks for looking!

Beautiful work on the spinner and guns, Gaz!  Those PE jackets look just fine to me.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Gaz
I've got a pair of those Gaspatch Spandau's to test out for my next model having previously used the kit ones. Will be interested to compare when I use them. Perfectly happy with the kit ones especially on my LVG which came out well enough.

Your kit versions look very good to me.

Can't comment on the spinner but will look back at yours when I get to my Albastross!

Cheers,
Alistair

The Spandaus look great to me. The spinner looks to be greatly improved. Having tried reshaping the kit spinner on my first 2 DV/DVa,s I went with a spare roden spinner for my current build.
