Again I really like your progress! You actually cut masking tape on a plate? Don’t the blades go blunt very quickly that way?
Borsos

HI Borsos,
    Thank you!

Blades seem to dull quickly no matter which application.  I buy less expensive blades and don't feel bad when I have to throw them away.  Still, I only change blades when I feel the need for fine cutting (PE and trimming fine parts).  I use side cutters and saws and files, as well, to limit knife usage.

Back again,
This time with pre-shading done.  Instead of using black or gray for the lighter shades, I just used dark shades since I'd mixed them.

I find it odd that WnW doesn't make the wing geography scalloped between the ribs.  So, hopefully it'll show up in the paintwork.

Cheers,

Gaz

Very interesting way of Preshading your wings. I never saw this before. Clever idea, I am keen on seeing it finished.
Besides of that I love your chosen color sheme, you can't go wrong with a Jasta 5 plane!

I agree with Andreas on all counts. Innovative way to pre shade the wings!

Guys,
Thank you!  It's all very experimental as I try to find my way  though this "new" and exciting genre of models.  I'm really curious about how I'm going to get that masking right on the tail.

That's the next hurdle.

Cheers,

Pheon makes some decals for doing the red outline of the Jasta 5 Albatroses (sp?), and FCM decals from Brazil include masks for the tails of Jasta 5 planes in their Albatros decal offerings.  If you have a Silhouette, you can measure the tail surfaces and create our own masks, testing with paper before committing to the masking material.

Bill,
   Thank you for the info!

Hi Everyone,
I took advantage of today's last bit of sunshine to put the base coat on the upper halves of the wings.
I sprayed on the two-color base coat, then tinted the new color with varying amounts of the pre-shade color to effect modulation with the airbrush.  Here are three views of the result:

I'll let them cure overnight, then do the undersides tomorrow after work if all goes well.

Cheers,

Gaz

Great result, Gaz. The colour looks very rich and the pre shadeing is very nice.

Now I like that. I am not a fan of preshading on wings (my own personal view) but that works well. It gives the ribtapes a tonal variation in a subtle way and isn't over the top. Very clever.

That worked very well. A deft touch with the airbrush

congratulations on that striking finish. your method really pays off! That's a good way to accentuate ribbing without postshading...
Hats off!

Really nice - gives me the heart to tackle these types of schemes which I otherwise shy away from. Great work.

Thanks,
