She looks superb Des! That upper woodwork still grabs my eye every time I see it.

Cheers,

I made the struts from wood toothpicks, they were flattened on two sides then sanded to obtain the correct profile, they were then cut to length. I fitted a short length of 2.0mm brass tube on the bottom of each strut, I glued each strut to the wing using five minute epoxy which results in a good strong bond. I coloured the struts with oil paint and once dry I gave them a coat of clear. I have also fitted the turnbuckles on the bottom wing, these are turnbuckles that are fitted directly into the wing, they are held in place with CA. This aircraft had double flying wires and double landing wires plus stagger wires, so all up there will be quite a bit if rigging.

This scratch build just gets better and better every time I log-in.

Those toothpics make lovely struts Des.  Bring on the top wing and the rest of the rigging!

Still well to the far right of the "spectacular" mark on the gauge, Des. An absolute joy to follow your progress!
Cheers (and stay well :))

Wow.

Scratch build! This is modeling to the highest level.

I really appreciate a scratch build. Superb stuff sir... both the model and the modeler!

Cheers.

I can only repeat what the others have already said. This is museum standard work and of that there is no doubt. I know that this is 1/32 scale but the finish and construction have blown my mind..............
I wonder whether I should bother to post any more pictures of my work as I could never reach this standard. Excellent work and many congratulations.

Amazing Des,

Makes me feel embarrassed building kits!

looks great ges as usual. i would fear that the toothpicks would snap, but those look to be some larger ones. i wonder did you soak them with anthing like ca to strengthen or just paint and varnish.though the varnish soaking in may be enuff to add some stability. dont think i'm second guessing the master i was just wondering.

The toothpicks are 2.0mm round bamboo, once flattened they end up as being 2.0mm x 1.0mm, and being bamboo they are very strong. Apart from shaping the toothpick and cutting to length all I did was use oil paint to add colour.

Gisbod:  Don’t be embarrassed about building kits.  Your kit is only a three-dimensional canvas; what you do with it is up to you.  As we all know, there are some amazing modellers out there sharing their artistic talents with us all.

Albatros1234:  I have also seen references to using tooth picks for wing struts and didn’t pay much attention until I saw this again in Des’ Caudron scratch build.  Tooth picks are very strong once varnished or painted, this comes from the cellulose fibres absorbing the paint and varnish.  Choose a good quality tooth pick and look for a very tight grain.  I understand that most tooth picks are now made from bamboo.  Bamboo is frequently used in ASIA for scafolding on multi-story building sites; I agree with Des, tooth picks are very strong.

My own view is that tooth pick (bamboo) wing struts are stronger than kit styrene.

Cheers

You are correct in saying that toothpicks are stronger than kit styrene struts Steven, I made several struts from styrene and found them to be very weak, so toothpicks came to the rescue, and toothpicks are so easy to work with.
