I have missed some of your more recent posts and so have been reading through again. This is amazing indeed - the amount of detail that you achieve even in this very large scale is truly staggering. The paint finishes are also outstanding.

Stephen.

Bertl,
I am late to this, but it's simply beautiful work all around. I must try your method for coloring the props. I do have another question for you:

This metal spinner . . . how did you achieve this wonderful finish??  It looks just like metal!

Hello Warren,

funnily enough and in line with your question, I am currently working on the spinner.
The metallic effect was created with Mr. Metal Color polishing paints and is actually quite easy and quick to achieve.

Here are the pictures in the order in which I worked.
First I put a few dents, bumps and small damages on the spinner, this was done with a small file and sandpaper.

Then I primed the spinner with Mr. Metalprimer.

Next, several thin layers of Mr. Metalcolor "Aluminum" were painted with the airbrush.

Now a few spots are painted on with "Iron", or rather dabbed on.
I use an old soft brush which I have given a (military) short haircut  8)
The spots are dabbed on irregularly.
It looks a bit ugly afterwards, but don't worry - it will get prettier.

The spinner is then polished.
I use the short-haired brush again for this.
This is rotated between thumb and forefinger with light (!) pressure.

Here you can see the effect after polishing.

Now seal with Tamiya "Smog". I use a mix of 50% paint and 50% thinner for this.

In the following picture you can see that this sealant softens the gloss a little and emphasizes the contrasts between "aluminum" and "iron" a little.

Again without sealing:

And now sealing with "smog":

The next step is a minimal washing of the screw holes, scratches and dents with heavily diluted dark brown oil color broth.
This is followed by another coat of 50/50 smog and thinner.
But before that, the current coat of paint has to dry thoroughly.

Bertl,
Thank you so much for that tutorial!! Is the Mr. Metal Color a lacquer-based paint like the rest of the line?

The propeller is now also almost complete.
Only the hub is still missing.
However, the hup-plate has also already been painted.
The propeller was sealed again after applying the decals.
I used a mixture of Tamiya's matt clear, semi-matt clear and smog for this.
Mix 1/3 of each paint.

"Smog" is used as a filter so that the very bright-looking golden axial decals become a little more matt and thus fit better into the overall picture.
The matt varnish is necessary to prevent the propeller from appearing too shiny for the scale effect, because "smog" and semi-matt clear together are relatively shiny.

Hi Warren,
Yes, you can also dilute the Mr. Metal-color series with the normal Gunze/Mr.Hobby Color-Thinner.

The colors are sometimes a bit strange to paint, they often clog the airbrush nozzle very quickly.
It may be necessary to dilute them by more than 50% with Mr. Thinner.

It may well be possible to achieve the metallic effect with metal polishing paints from another manufacturer, but I have never tried it.

The spinner was treated with dark, highly diluted oil paint and then sealed again with diluted Tamiya "Smog".
However, it is not yet finished at this stage.

The propeller hub-plate has now also been fitted.
The propeller itself is now completely finished.

Wood and metal ....

Superb work here, Bertl.
I was reviewing this thread and how you use the AK chipping fluid to obtain the weathered look of paint chipping.
I was wondering if you found that the chipping fluid simply beads up on surfaces previously painted with a solvent based paint, like the oil paints used on the floor?  I have found this to be the case and was unable to use the chipping fluid over a lacquer paint.
Do you use a certain type of paint for the base color?
