Roden 1/32nd SPAD XIII Early
« on: July 16, 2021, 10:07:41 PM »

Following up on My review I intend to start building this kit at this time. I will also include a few of My lousy photos that weren't quite good enough for a "Proper" review  8)

The Decal test was fairly good and like I said although the print quality of the roundels is poor the personal markings worked well. Not Brittle and adhered to the details:

This panel needs to be removed on the Early version

Hopefully more progress soon  ;D

Thanks for showing us the way Rick!  Looking forward to what you do with this.  You seem to be the master of SPADs lately. ;)

Best regards,

Bob

Thanks Bob. I am far from the "Master" but I will do My best   ;D I have info from another Forum Modeler that is working on this kit. He is indeed a "Master" builder and with the mods He is making the kit should be Superb  8)

PS: My build will be as close to OOB as Possible!

That's great Rick, as I prefer building close to OOB if I can.  I appreciate the trail of corn kernels you will leave for us! ;D

Best,

Bob

Thanks for starting this Rick, it'll be essential reading for me in due course.

Now, where are my files/sanding paper... Hope there's no further surgery to do!

Cheers

As long as you are doing French or Italian there should be very little more to do  8) That being said I decided to do a WAG on B3479, the first SPAD XIII flown operationally by the British. It served about 2 months in 19 squadron, went to an Air Depot, then comes back about 5 or 6 months later with 23 squadron. I will be making Many guesses as to finish and markings.

Which reminds Me of something I meant to mention in the Review:
The British SPAD XIII had lacing added to the Left/ Port fuselage side. It is a bit different looking than the lacing on the SPAD VII but roughly in the same locations. Roden theoretically would have had to do 3 left fuselage halves to get everything right for early, and late versions covering all of the users  ::) Not very practical so details to be added.

A bit of a start on the interior. Basics painted pending washes and touch up.

and I Painted the wings PC10.

Like the SE5a I will add more contrast once I receive the Strippers from Bobs Buckles!
RAGIII

PS: I thought I would show the Wing comparison to the Hobby Craft 13. Note how Heavy the wing ribs look compared to the Roden kit. JMHO.

This looks to be a beautiful kit Rick, especially the nose section with the hatches and the rivets.

Are the details on kit fuse as beautiful as in the box-art?

In My opinion the details are good. More restrained/ scale than the Hobby Craft kit. One thing I forgot to mention is that the Swirls some noted in the plastic on the wings is not visible once a coat of primer is applied to the surface!

So I have made made some progress. I touched up the interior frame work and went on to the basic engine construction. I am Not going overboard on the engine as the only part that will be seen is perhaps a small amount of the lower crankcase and some piping. I also started some of the detailing by adding some cross bracing wires and the compass. Taking Kens advice I removed the foremost raised guide for locating the firewall. I don't know what I did but in My case it was not necessary as the front engine mount frames fit inset as designed. Better safe than sorry! Lots of touch up and other stuff still to do.

Good to see you at work on this. I have something to complete before starting my one but I'm sure your build log will be very helpful when time will come.

Thanks Richie. So far not too many issues. That being said a very quick test of parts held together indicate that the engine will need to have the cam covers removed to fit under the cowling. Like the SPAD VII the cylinder heads and cam covers aren't necessary to complete the model. However, if an engine is included it is reasonable to expect it to fit. We shall see in a few days.   JMHO,
