Been a while but my orange DFW is all ready for the decals and then final assembly. The variations in the orange don't really show up in the photos but I used four different shades to make it less uniform.

Alistair - looks awesome!  How did you do the thin line of white/grey color at the edge of the wings and tail?  It came out really well, and is something I have struggled with.

Dave - I just use 12 mm wide Tamiya masking tape. I use the wing pieces as a ruler guide and trace the outline onto white photocopy paper with a pencil. Then I stick the masking tape over the traced line, then I use curved nail scissors to cut out the masking tape along with its paper background. The tape peels off the paper easily and then is positioned on the part. It has to be done in sections and the hardest part is getting the right alignment. It works very well - I only had two very tiny bleeds which were easily touched up - but it is very time consuming! Probably several hours to do all the masking and then about 3 minutes to spray them! I also remove the mask almost immediately to prevent a ridge forming bewteen the two colours.

I've always thought masking is an art - the hard part.  Painting is just spraying the color on.
The orange color looks great.

Probably several hours to do all the masking and then about 3 minutes to spray them!

And not to forget the hour of cleaning the airbrush after that

I am a little unsure of the colour I have chosen. But with the decals now on it sings. Black, white, orange.

Odd spot: I just did a clear over spray and one side of the engine went completely white. Turned out that a very small spider had woven a web over that side of the engine which I didn't see. Brushed out now and all okay but a surpise modellig outcome. What the hell is going on? Oh it's a spider web.

Up on its wheels now and lower wings, tail planes on. I'm not much of a turnbuckle fan so just use brass tubing to thicken the line and hint at a buckle. Will only do a bit of paint thickening for the control lines to the tail plane horns.

All ready for final assembly and it should be done this coming weekend I think. The orange is more "orange" than the photos show - too much reflection from the lighting. With the black and white colour scheme it really pops and, after earlier doubts about going orange I now like it. Definitely my most distinctive plane and I like its lines!







Anyway I will make the deadline but it was touch and go for a while with travel for work getting in the way.

That is looking great, Alistair!  The orange really pops and gives a very distinctive look.  The white edging really sets it off.
