Daily update.

Lozenge complete. The Aviattic cookie cut lozenge really is a treat. Great to work with, tough yet very thin...





Stickers on, weathered & sealed in. Now, I did have major problems with the Wingnut decals; not a statement I thought I’d ever use. But, they took an age to soak off, nearly all cracked with handling and I had some adhesion issues too. Even after they were finally stuck down I found some areas on the national markings lifting in small pockets, even though they’d been sealed in.

I’ve emailed Richard at Wingnut’s for info. It’s a shame, because although all looks fine in the photos (with a little PS touch up) it doesn’t quite cut it to the naked eye, which means I would be loathe to put it on a competition table (which I enjoy doing at Telford every year )

I’d be interested if anyone else has this issue. Incidentally, I mentioned it to Richard at Aviattic, and he said there’s, believe it or not, a worldwide issue with rubberising agent...

Anyway, all looks ok in the pics...





Actually, you can just see a little of the lifting I mentioned towards the top of the ‘4’ if you look closely...

Wow Guy, great update, those Aviattic cookie cut lozenge look awesome along with the rest of your build.

Guy I wanted to mention I have used Elmers Glue for ever as a decal base and have had great results. I'm not sure this would help the lifting but you might try it.

You basically place a thinned puddle of the glue in the decal spot and tamp down the decal until the glue squeezes out. Since the glue is water re-activated any excess can be cleaned off in time.

Another benefit of this process if that the thickish glue will fill in the hills and valleys of a flat paint job and reduce or eliminate silvering.

BTW the Elmer's makes a great bush painted ultra flat when thinned down too.

I would go to wide with your brush but it can eliminate super glue glare and so on.

Looks fantastic Guy, I am building the late version and can confirm the kit supplied decals are poor as you have experienced. I did try the lozenge initially but the would just not conform so off they came and I went down the Aviattic route but cutting them out of a complete A4 sheet and adding seperate rib tapes before the cookie cut set became available!!

Thanks for the tip Ryan, I’ll try that, but the decals are definitely faulty...

Good to know it’s not just me Andy! Maybe you could pass on to Richard at Wingnuts? If he gets a few emails they may well address this.

Really excellent results all around. Glad you have overcome the decal issues! Odd that only in the last year or two have WNW decals had any issues. The roundels on the Camel come to mind and now this kit! Hope they get things sorted out soon!

Really pitty about the decal issue. May be you can put thinned white glue below?

But in one thing you are wrong:

Since Scarff was a British officer and gunner the weight balanced Scarff ring can be only found on British aircrafts and not on german ones ...
... but I know what you mean

So almost finishing off really... top wing done, decalled and then a green glaze as per Wingnut’s recommendations.





Top wing on and a start on the rigging. I’m using Gaspatch’s resin anchor points and one end turnbuckles. Beautifully moulded and a little finer than their metal counterparts, but equally a little brittle, but I haven’t had any issues so far... will let you know how I go. I find the whole top wing attachment thing infinitely easier when there’s a centre section. At this point I’m pleased I spent the time aligning and masking the struts as the centre section just popped into place - hardly any need for glue even.
