Evening,
Here’s my entry into Des’s group build - the new Wingnut’s Halberstadt! Looks like another gem and I can’t wait to get started.
(https://i.postimg.cc/52y2ypry/B6019-E79-0602-4-ABA-BA3-F-CFBDC11-AD989.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It’s having some extra’s thrown in. For starters the Gaspatch Spandau; Parabellum; Airspeed indicator; Anchor points; One end turnbuckles :) The turnbuckles & anchor points are resin - I’m just hoping they’re strong enough for monofilament, they certainly look good!
(https://i.postimg.cc/4dsC7x3P/B1-E3-B2-D4-F2-DE-4-A53-8-A99-62021-D41-EF79.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/zLt245KH)
Still to arrive is the Aviattic lozenge.
Progress soon I hope!
Regards
Guy

I’m going for this one...

I love the stippled camouflage. I just hope I can do it justice...
Guy

Hi Guy
The Halberstadt is a great looking plane. But the colour schemes terrify - looks like you have choosen one that would be a nightmare for me. Best of luck and I look forward to your progress.
Cheers
Alistair
-
I like a challenge! ???
Guy
-
Great choice of kits and Markings. I am looking forward to your build.
RAGIII
-
Guy,
Another great choice and addition to the GB and Tribute. My Kit, a Christmas gift, is yet to arrive so I'll be following closely to pick up all the pointers I can. I'm really going to enjoy watching you break new ground here on the latest from Wingnuts; break a leg Sir!
Cheers,
Lance
-
I love the scheme you've chosen! Sister ship to "Brünhilde". Looking forward to this one.
Cheers,
Bud
-
Thanks Rick, Bud & Lance :)
Lance - I can certainly give you some pointers on what not to do!
Well, the postman came today bearing gifts. One was a 1/18 Fw190, but one envelope bore the Aviattic stamp ;D
Hot off the press - Halberstadt cookie-cut lozenge! Yum :)
(https://i.postimg.cc/zX9dBJ7Q/97-E1132-F-B7-AF-4-C0-C-9-DCA-EC974-F0-C2512.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/YhzNDBJN)
These are seriously lovely. Compared to Wingnut’s lozenge - it’s very grown up!
(https://i.postimg.cc/fWq2G79D/8-B92-E875-3330-4696-9-BC8-19781-ADE7-B7-E.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/DmsPsX6M)

A comparison with Wingnut’s lower lozenge:

And upper surfaces:

The differences are really quite dramatic. I wish Aviattic could get a tie in with Wingnuts... I just love the linen effects.
Thanks for looking in...
Guy
-
Guy, I am sure, you‘ll do honor to this kit, as you did to all the other kits I know from you! Looking forward to your build!
Richard
-
Thanks Richard,
I’m kicking off with the cockpit as per usual. One point to note is that there is definitely more flash on the sprues than a usual WWs kit... the plastic seems different too. Possibly not the same quality? But once cleaned up, the parts seem up to the normal standards. The fit of parts so far is spot on.
I’ve finished the instrument panel...
(https://i.postimg.cc/VvFXf4V4/04-DE94-F2-937-D-43-A0-8953-4-C5335584353.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/4HmYwvZh)
The handles for the pumps and switches aren’t included (just fine wire used). I thought they usually supplied them as PE? Perhaps I’m remembering wrongly...
More soon as it’s continuing at a pace. I’m not rushing exactly, but once I like a kit I can’t leave it alone!
Guy
-
Very nice... And I do not remember a single WNW kit which would have fuel switch selectors included. Nicely scratch built, btw.
-
Extremely clean work! The Aviattic lozenge looks it's usual superb self, but the WNW lozenge looks better than what was previously included to my untrained eye...
-
Ah, I must be thinking of Eduard maybe Prze...
Thanks Jeroen, I thought it looked better too in photos, but in the flesh, it’s not a patch on Aviattic.
Guy
-
Excellent work on the IP. Looks fantastic!
RAGIII
-
Brilliant start. Love the subtle texture on the dash and the switches are a great add - I may try that myself.
Cheers
Alistair
-
Great start Guy, looking forward to your next update.
-
Guy dumb question what black did you use on the IP? Rubber, SG Black etc?
Good work as use.
Ryan
-
This is going to be a fun watch. ;)
Off to a great start, Guy!
vB ;)
-
Ah thanks chaps :)
Guy dumb question what black did you use on the IP? Rubber, SG Black etc?
Good work as use.
Ryan
Hi Ryan.. it’s Vallejo NATO black - it’s a black/grey which tends to look better to my eye than a standard black...
Here’s a quick view of the HGW belt versus the kit PE version:

Thanks Guy I wasn’t aware they had that in their range.
The HGW stuff is amazing.

Yep, sure is!

Fantastic Guy and a good idea.
I have been added to the GB and need to decide what to build!
Ryan
-
Looks fantastic Guy, and that is a brilliant idea (painting in place).
-
Great start! The interior looks really nice and real.
And your speed is impressive, you can register until March, but you don't need to be ready with the first project until that date to register a second one ;D
Cheers,
Frank

Guy
Hi Guy
I hope it's not a dumb question. How did you protect the parts in situ when you sprayed the backround with maskol or something similar , or did you just take the parts off and spray over the background colour on the parts?
Cheers
Andrew
-
Very nice start. And a good masking tip.
Ciao
Giuseppe

Thanks all,
I hope it's not a dumb question. How did you protect the parts in situ when you sprayed the backround with maskol or something similar , or did you just take the parts off and spray over the background colour on the parts?
Cheers
Andrew
No dumb questions Andrew! It’s really as simple as spraying the parts in situ, then removing the sidewall and then I gave that a slightly highlighted coat to give it some relief. With the gloss (for the pin wash and decalling) and subsequent flat coat - I just put it back in situ. I’ve just found over many kits that having no paint between parts is pretty crucial.
And your speed is impressive, you can register until March, but you don't need to be ready with the first project until that date to register a second one ;D
Frank
Yes, I really ought to as this will be finished in a couple of weeks I guess... I haven’t got anything in the stash though :P my 1/48 Brisfit was started too early.
So update, the cockpit is pretty much finished. Engine next.

Man I need to take quick build lessons from you!
Ryan
-
Breathtaking start on the Halberstadt and great news regarding the Aviattic cookies — as I intend to build another Halberstadt Cl. II for this group build here. But when I am looking at your pictures, I rethink these plans as I won’t be able to keep up with this wonderful interior here.
Best regards
Andreas

Man I need to take quick build lessons from you!
Ryan
I totally agree. ;D ;D ;D
-
Quite exquisite work, Guy! And a real fast start too... can't wait to see this lovely kit take shape - you will do it more than justice!!

Andreas
Hi Andreas, yep, was really pleased about those. I got the first one off the press :)
Man I need to take quick build lessons from you!
Ryan
I seem to go for speed over quality!
Engine finished... I’ve replaced the kit rocker springs with coiled fuse wire & used a couple of Taurus spark plug from an older build, but otherwise kept it simple on the bits that won’t be on show.
The brass plate at the front is copying from period pics where quite a few had this, I guess, protective plate for the engine.

Gorgeous interior! You are working quickly but the results do not show any sign of haste!
RAGIII

Very very very nice!!
Andreas
-
Fantastic build so far Guy, that engine and interior are first class.
-
Wow!!! I used your Hannover build as the reference build when I did mine. Now we have the new reference for the Halberstadt!
Cheers
Alistair
-
Splendid work for sure Guy, keep the pics flowing.
Ryan

Thank you Ryan, Rick, Andreas & Alistair ;)
Progress continues apace...
Fuselage together. As usual it took me ages to get rid of the seam line- I seem to have a modelling block over these. Even now there’s still a faint line visible...
I was planning on cementing the struts after painting - fearing I’d hamfistedly break them off during painting, but after dry fitting everything I figured the cowling would need to be glued in place before painting; meaning I’d have to glue the struts in situ regardless. The cowling on mine seemed to be a very tight fit and I realised I’d have a bit of a fight on my hands to glue in place - meaning I’d really have to do it pre painting to prevent a gluey mess. The fit, I’m sure, is fine, maybe it was something I did. I ended up having to epoxy and clamp in place. Having glued it all, I think I had to take that approach. It may well be different on your model...
(https://i.postimg.cc/W3MB3Hsy/6-CFC9-AAD-D36-D-4152-B7-A4-1-B04-A49-E2798.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0MyWXZMG)
I used the top centre wing section (not glued) to make sure the struts dried at the right angles. I found the strut attachment points not quite as a click fit as I was hoping, so it’s obviously important to get these right.
So, I primed with Mr. Surfacer 1500 grey, then a light coat of Alclad Aluminium on the (aluminium) cowling, followed by a squirt of hairspray before an overall coat of Vallejo light grey green. I then sprayed freehand a rough lozenge (with a little imagination!) pattern with a further 4 colours (blue, dark green, red brown, mid brown). I figured it didn’t have to be too accurate as it would be ‘blended’ with the stippling effect to come.
(https://i.postimg.cc/sxPbVdz8/CF39-CB27-30-CD-4-EA3-9150-E3-F20-D74-D56-F.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/0KQVf4bd)
Stippling next. I just followed the guidance given on the WWs website for this and found it worked perfectly; that is adjusting the air pressure down until you get a light, but consistent, splatter. I was expecting some issues with this method but I didn’t have any - it was actually pretty straightforward; for a change! Just make sure the paint is suitablely thinned. I used a mix of yellow and light green. Great fun!
(https://i.postimg.cc/66CkVRZ0/53323297-3366-482-A-8-C0-C-0-C7-CB9-EAEDC8.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/ThYNfKCL)

Then, armed with a tooth pick - I scratched away at the edges of the cowling. This always looks so much more realistic than a post application to me...

Finally done and quite happy with the overall effect :)

Guy

Guy that really does look like the effect, well done.
I have (3) of these Halbies in the stash, your build makes me want to start one for the tribute build...but then no, as it would be held against your high standard!
Ryan
-
You achieved a wonderful fuselage finish in an incredible short time. You nailed the splatter effect perfectly.
I hoped for a good Halberstadt kit for a long time. I am looking forward in anticipation to start this kit like I rarely do with any kit and your build is the perfect guidance for me. Like Ryan said and I once said as well: You are setting the bar really high!
Best regards
Andreas
-
Looks fantastic Guy, I'm currently building one of these but the late version and closed up the fuselage over the weekend and added the cowls and just as you the fit of the cowls was super tight, also spoken to somebody else and they have had the same issue so I think it's a WnW overly tight fit syndrome issue creeping in!
Regards. Andy
-
Very fine results! You made it look so easy. However, I am happy I have different plans for my Halberstadt with no stippling involved. ;)
-
Excellent results on the spatter scheme. You are really moving along on this one
RAGIII
-
You're really getting through this build, Guy. Nice stippling and interior work.
-
Guy you are falling behind, I'm expecting the rigging to be complete at your pace!
Ryan
-
Guy,
Awesome spattered paint scheme my friend. Truly some of the best application I've seem. Keep up the excellence.
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Thank you all ;D for your kind comments.. I know I’m rushing, but I can’t seem to slow down!
Pushing on with the staffel markings...

Oh please do not slow down, there is no speed limit!
Ryan
-
WOW!
-
You are building faster then I can read your update here :o
Regardless of the speed the quality is great, this will be a nice model.
I have never heard, that WNW also doing Weekend-Editions, as Eduard ;D
Cheers,
Frank
-
Beautiful and outstanding progress, looks great.
-
Oh please do not slow down, there is no speed limit!
Ryan
AGREE COMPLETELY!
RAGIII
-
Extraordinary progress and results. You make it look easy but we know it isn't. That is some very skilled airbrushing there alone and together with everything else you are doing you are way out of my league.
Cheers
Alistair
-
Nonsense Alistair!
Everyone’s being very kind, but I’d wait until you see the end result... ??? I always have a few major *&@# ups.
Daily update:
All glossed up for decalling...

Lovely work on the tail stripes and fuselage band. A scheme after my own heart 8) The Aviattic lozenge should look stunning over your prepared wings!
RAGIII

Thanks Rick :)
Daily update.
Lozenge complete. The Aviattic cookie cut lozenge really is a treat. Great to work with, tough yet very thin...

Stickers on, weathered & sealed in. Now, I did have major problems with the Wingnut decals; not a statement I thought I’d ever use. But, they took an age to soak off, nearly all cracked with handling and I had some adhesion issues too. Even after they were finally stuck down I found some areas on the national markings lifting in small pockets, even though they’d been sealed in.
I’ve emailed Richard at Wingnut’s for info. It’s a shame, because although all looks fine in the photos (with a little PS touch up) it doesn’t quite cut it to the naked eye, which means I would be loathe to put it on a competition table (which I enjoy doing at Telford every year ::) )
I’d be interested if anyone else has this issue. Incidentally, I mentioned it to Richard at Aviattic, and he said there’s, believe it or not, a worldwide issue with rubberising agent...
Anyway, all looks ok in the pics...

Actually, you can just see a little of the lifting I mentioned towards the top of the ‘4’ if you look closely...

Thanks
Guy
-
More Guy goodness, thanks for the update and I see the lifting in the shot.
Ryan
-
Wow Guy, great update, those Aviattic cookie cut lozenge look awesome along with the rest of your build.
-
Guy I wanted to mention I have used Elmers Glue for ever as a decal base and have had great results. I'm not sure this would help the lifting but you might try it.
You basically place a thinned puddle of the glue in the decal spot and tamp down the decal until the glue squeezes out. Since the glue is water re-activated any excess can be cleaned off in time.
Another benefit of this process if that the thickish glue will fill in the hills and valleys of a flat paint job and reduce or eliminate silvering.
Ryan
-
BTW the Elmer's makes a great bush painted ultra flat when thinned down too.
I would go to wide with your brush but it can eliminate super glue glare and so on.
Ryan
-
Looks fantastic Guy, I am building the late version and can confirm the kit supplied decals are poor as you have experienced. I did try the lozenge initially but the would just not conform so off they came and I went down the Aviattic route but cutting them out of a complete A4 sheet and adding seperate rib tapes before the cookie cut set became available!!
Regards. Andy
-
Thanks for the tip Ryan, I’ll try that, but the decals are definitely faulty...
Good to know it’s not just me Andy! Maybe you could pass on to Richard at Wingnuts? If he gets a few emails they may well address this.
Guy
-
Really excellent results all around. Glad you have overcome the decal issues! Odd that only in the last year or two have WNW decals had any issues. The roundels on the Camel come to mind and now this kit! Hope they get things sorted out soon!
RAGIII
-
I'm speechless, not only building so quickly but all done in superb quality. The very guide for building and painting this kit.
And thank you for the advice on the decals.
Ciao
Giuseppe
-
Guy, again a great update with result, that makes me speechless!
Really pitty about the decal issue. May be you can put thinned white glue below?
But in one thing you are wrong:
Quick view of the cockpit before I put the scarff ring on...
Since Scarff was a British officer and gunner the weight balanced Scarff ring can be only found on British aircrafts and not on german ones ...
... but I know what you mean ;)
Cheers,
Frank
-
Guy, let me return your words - THIS will be hard to beat! Great modelling!
-
Not for you Prze! But thanks..
Frank, yes, you’re quite right of course ;)
Thank you Giuseppe ;D
Thanks Rick, let’s hope it’s not a trend..
So almost finishing off really... top wing done, decalled and then a green glaze as per Wingnut’s recommendations.
(https://i.postimg.cc/fbvqjyXq/A2-E67-B08-5-E2-E-4-D7-F-AC32-0477-ACFD7389.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/yJkT7VL0)
Top wing on and a start on the rigging. I’m using Gaspatch’s resin anchor points and one end turnbuckles. Beautifully moulded and a little finer than their metal counterparts, but equally a little brittle, but I haven’t had any issues so far... will let you know how I go. I find the whole top wing attachment thing infinitely easier when there’s a centre section. At this point I’m pleased I spent the time aligning and masking the struts as the centre section just popped into place - hardly any need for glue even.

Little out of focus, but this is the resin anchor point next to the kit one...

Cheers
Guy
-
Guy I love the sheen you have on the model, what clear coat have you used?
Ryan
-
Well color me stippled. That fuselage paint worked really well and you're building the scheme that I want to do.
-
Thanks Daryl...
Ryan, I use Alclad ‘Light Sheen’ as my go to finish, I also have their flat and gloss so it’s easy to mix if you want to adjust it either way.
Guy
-
Odds & bobs...
Just the final stages now and the bits and pieces to add. I’ve salvaged a wooden prop off of an old build, sanded off the varnish and went for a stained finish this time...

And the rather splendid Gaspatch Parabellum, you really have to see this in the flesh to appreciate the detail in the moulding...

And finally, an airspeed indicator... can anyone spot the error here? I bet you can’t...

Note to self - must wear my glasses when constructing these small contraptions... ???
Next post will probably in the completed model section.
Do keep up everyone...

This is a great example on how to build this kit properly! I do love your colour choices and realistic touch... Magnificent! Marc

Guy, as with the rest of the build the small details are expertly finished.

Beautiful! I have this kit in the "to do" pile. I will save your build as a reference

Beautiful and bookmarked, because this is very helpful for my upcoming CL.II (late) build.
The "stipple job" is awesome! Not sure I can make it look as good...or half as good.
I'll practise a bit, but with the Aviattic decals as a cowardly backup. ;D
Again....awesome result. Not only the stipple of course.

Thanks Robin,
Pleased that it helps in some way. The Stipple really isn’t as had as it looks!
