IN-CRE-DIBLE how you manage these complex strut arrangement. Simply looks great.
Kind regards

I made a small jig that fitted across the pins on each pair of struts just to make sure everything was aligned

Des,

can you please upload a photo of that jig?

Fantastic work as usual Des.
I was sitting looking at it when something jumped out at me....is the shaft from the engine to the prop units supposed to be wood coloured? I would have assumed it was a metal fairing covering the drive shaft. Just a thought!

Thank you to Stefan, Ian, Mark and Ermeio for your very kind comments.

Ian, it is very hard to tell from B&W photos what colour certain items are, to me all the struts look the same colour. CSM say that the struts are painted a light gray but a colour profile I printed out shows them as being a wood colour. The drive shaft is inside the streamlined strut so it could be either wood or metal, hard to tell from original photos. I may decide to change the colour of those two struts to gray.

Stefan, the jig is an extremely simple device, just a length of 1.0mm x 1.5mm styrene strip with 0.8mm holes drilled to slip over the pins in the ends of the struts. Dimensions for the hole locations are taken from the scale plans. Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best.

Des, this is truly beautiful work and great craftmanship, you're delivering here!
One has to admit that this S.M.1 was not the most beautiful design of a plane, but watching your build-log makes me like this aeroplane despite it's comparative uglyness...

Thanks Richard for dropping by and leaving much appreciated comments.

I managed to complete the top wing today, all I need to do is give it a coat of satin clear. For the rib tapes I used Bobs Buckles 1.0mm strippers. The top wing is only sitting in position for photo purposes, once the entire model is sprayed with a satin clear I will fit the top wing. I had to remove the front and rear parts of the jig to allow the model to still sit inside the jig for top wing fitment. I also assembled and fitted the front machine gun.

Just a superb job, Des!  About as close to perfection as is possible,
my friend.  A very unusual, but extremely pleasing aeroplane.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Blimey Des - I miss a week and you make half of the model!  That is really looking good and the level of detail is remarkable. I have bookmarked this blog because it will provide me with excellent ideas to follow later.

The jigs which you have constructed are also first class and just after my own spirit - cheap, easy and simple. The struts arrangement remind me strongly of the HB CC which would also have been impossible to put together without jigs. A complex arrangement of struts and propulsion shafts there - but all exciting things to model. Your model will be one to emulate as usual.

Thank you Ernie, Richard and Stephen for your very kind comments. I now have to do lots of rigging between the X struts on the propeller drive units, this will be done after I spray the model with a satin clear.

Looking at some Hi-Res photos I realised that there are rigging wires between the X struts on the propeller drive units, I have just sprayed the model with a coat of satin clear so it will have to sit overnight before I can start the rigging. There are no rigging attachment points anywhere on the model so I will have to make a heap of small eyelets, I will probably use 0.1mm elastic sewing thread as this will be a more appropriate scale size.
Here are photos of the model with the clear satin applied, the top wing is only just sitting in position.
