Title: CSM Salmsom-Moineau S.M.1 1:48 scale
Post by: Des on June 09, 2016, 07:36:09 PM
Edgar from CSM has sent me this kit and asked me to do a build log to help promote the kit.

A little history on this unusual aeroplane.

The unusual configuration was a result of Moineau's concern with minimizing the drag of the bulky 240hp Salmson 9A2c engine by placing it sideways in the square-section fuselage, to drive the two propellers via streamlined gearbox units mounted on "X" struts between the wings. The propellers were geared to rotate in opposite directions in order to minimize the effects of torque. Although at least 155 examples were built, the S.M.1 was not a success. Despite being designed as a three-seater it was officially recommended that it be flown with only two crew members as with three the performance was very poor. Inferior in every respect to the contemporary Sopwith one and a half strutter (which equipped the majority of French reconnaissance units at the time of the S.M.1's introduction), difficult to handle on the ground and in the air and prone to landing accidents, the machine was disliked by its unfortunate crews and those tasked with servicing and repairing its complex transmission system and complicated rigging. Indeed, it was suspected that many of the ground handling accidents may not have been entirely accidental!

The kit.

The kit arrived in a very sturdy box and was well packed for transport, no damage was caused to the kit during transit.

The kit contents are all sealed within zip-lock plastic bags, the PE and decals are also housed withing plastic bags. There is a separate box with contains parts to make the Salmson engine and the Lewis guns

There are a large number of dark coloured resin parts some of which will require some cleaning due to a small amount of flash.

Another bonus are plans to make a jig for assembling this model.

I will be starting this build soon but I will be out of my comfort zone, I am not a 1:48 scale builder and I am not proficient at building resin kits but I promise to do my utmost to promote this kit and to produce a respectable looking model. As usual with all my builds I have been searching the net for necessary information and printing out appropriate photos.

Cool des I hope you like the 1/48,experience. Some aircraft lent themselves to smaller scale. I can see little reason for a 1/32 felixstowe or gotha for instance .I know if you get down to work it will be fun. I will look in my French a/c book and see if there is anything helpful for you

A great choice,
I'm sure that you will produce another masterpiece, Des.
And the shape of this aircraft is unusual enough to make it a showstopper.
All the best

what? what? what? you don't read my post?
there will be two models!

about the decorations there is work to be done. This picture is not enough because we can't see the wings an there was a lot of kind of representation of the soviet star.
it's not sure the fuselage star was black

I have a russian friend and I can ask him to loock for other pictures and informations

Work has commenced on this model by firstly building the engine. The engine for this aircraft is a Salmson 9A2c water cooled 9 cylinder radial. CSM have done a great job with the parts for this engine with the resin parts being done in a very dark grey. PE parts for the rocker assemblies are also included, I added 0.25mm brass wire for the push rods. I still need to add the ignition leads and to paint the spark plug. As can be seen by the photo with the match the engine is quite small. All the photos I have seen of the original aircraft show the exhaust manifold as a white/ish colour.

I wholly agree with Ian that this would make an excellent subject to scratch build in God's Own Scale. However in the meantime we can all sit and enjoy the master 1/48 scale builder in action - and what a tremendous start he has made. Des this should be right up your street - unconventional in every respect.

But it will be another mini-masterpiece even if you do not have to make the majority of the parts.

Thanks Ed and Ermeio for your very kind comments.

I cleaned up the fuselage parts and roughly fitted them together to gauge the accuracy of fit. Obviously more cleaning is required but the fit appears to be quite good, the fuselage parts are not warped at all and have reasonable detail. I will do the fuselage internal detailing next but finding information on the cockpit and gunner/observer stations is near impossible.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I will be building this model virtually OOB, there will only be minimal alterations/modifications/detailing.

Thanks guys for looking in and leaving your very kind comments.

I have started detailing the inside of the fuselage. Some of the bulkheads are supplied with the kit but I will need to scratch a few more. The linen colour is painted using Gunze off-white while the darker colour is Gunze black-grey. The fuselage bracing wires are Modelkasten elastic rigging thread. The engine is only sitting in position for photo purposes. I still need to add the pilots seat, front and rear gunner seats, instrument panel, control column and rudder bar, also the throttle quadrant.

You don`t see white exhausts every day)

Perhaps they were lagged with asbestos cloth.

Edgar, these photos show the exhaust as being a whit/ish colour, they are certainly not silver or metallic. Hard to tell with B&W photos but to my eye it appears the exhaust is near white. Please bear in mind that my exhaust manifold has not been weathered yet, when completed it will not be a stark white like it is at the moment. I would greatly appreciate input from the forum members regarding the exhaust colour or even better some photos which would show the exhaust and its colour, Edgar, please post the photos you have where you say the exhaust is almost shiny.

It looks like it could have been brushed on ceramic coating ?
Hence the white effect , don't think paint would hold up to the heat form the exhaust ...

Des, I agree that it`s hard to tell for sure what material is on the surface of the exhausts, same as for this machine in overall)many blind spots)
Agreed! All Salmson engines I know have copper exhausts. I would take it for a heavily weathered copper exhaust  :)

I'm very impressed with the detail of her Salmson engine. Truly a gem in it's own right. As always I much appreciate your choice in projects. We both share a love of the unusual aircraft and seldom seem/modeled types.Looking forward to following this thread and I hope you might come up with a scratch built example in 1/32 scale. i suppose it cold be as stated copper exhaust having oxidized to that nice greyish greenish patina. but there might still be a bit of chalky whitishness as well.i imagine omething like the link below although

I have just about completed the internals. I used the kit supplied resin seat but made the rear bulkhead and gunners seat, the front gunners seat is kit supplied. I also made an instrument panel and fitted the kit supplied instrument gauges and bezels, except the brass one, I still need to fit a timber frame around the centre map. I have also fitted the front right side of the fuselage. The kit supplied throttle quadrant is also fitted, the kit PE control wheel was a bit flat so I added a circle of 0.5mm copper wire, this gives it a bit of bulk, rudder bar which is home made is also fitted. I will not be doing super detailing to the interior as most of it will not be seen.

I will be taking a few days off to conduct two reviews of other products.

Perhaps not "super detailing, Des, but a lovely detailing job it is! An unusual subject, a new Kit, and your skills are producing a real winner, I like it!

Thanks Lance for your much appreciated comments.

I have closed the fuselage and surprisingly all parts fitted really well, apart from the small piece I broke off there is very little filling to do. Once filled and sanded the entire fuselage will shape up really well, as I said earlier very little of the interior is now visible. As far as a resin kit I am pleased with the way the kit has gone together so far, I have had to make some parts but that is all part of modeling, the lack of instructions is the only drawback.

Not kept up with this Des - just remarkable what you have achieved. Your "ordinary" detailing of the interior is better than my "super-detailing" even though much of it cannot be seen. I am following this with interest because I have this on my list to scratch build att some time in the future.

i hope this is enjoyable to you des. to me 1/48 is a great scale to work in. 1/72 is just too small in most cases although i have had fun building some 1/72 stuff for example i recently built the encore oeffag albatros in that scale which was a fun quick build. i have built a few 1/32 and they do allow for more super detailing and enable some small parts to be more accurate and faithful to the original but sometimes it just takes so long to get it done and the models are big and harder to display or transport if you like to go to shows and contests. 1/48 is the perfect compromise imho. you are able to add quite a bit of detail but the build progress more rapidly, when you are finished the result is suffuciently impressive easy to display and there are many more odd subjects from multiple companies to choose from . for me this is ideal. i hope you enjoy and consider doing other 1/48 stuff. you would do a phenomenal job on a roden be2c for example.

Thanks very much Gary for your much appreciated comments.

I fitted the two PE panels to the side of the fuselage, to add a bit of detail I added 0.4mm brass tube for the hinges then inserted lengths of 0.12mm copper wire to represent the removable hinge pins, I formed a loop on the end of each pin.

I also fitted the PE engine cooling louvres to the left side of the fuselage, these PE louvres had to be assembled so took quite some time. The louvre panes have also been fitted with hinges from 0.4mm brass tube and hinge pins from 0.12 copper wire. I also fitted cockpit padding, this is made from 0.95 plastic tubing CA'd to the fuselage, this will be painted a leather colour.

I added a bit of paint to the front portion of the fuselage using Hobby Color (Gunze) H334 Barley Gray, I also repainted the exhaust manifold this time using Humbrol Metal Cote 27003 Polished Steel. I had to cut a slot in the rear of the fuselage to accept the tail plane, it is now glued in position, I still need to tidy it up a bit where I made the slot. I also removed the three fuel/oil filler pipes which where resin, I will be replacing them with brass tube.

As I said earlier this model will be built mainly OOB, so I added the kit supplied resin radiators, I added some pipes to the radiators using 0.6mm copper wire, I also added the breather pipes which still need to be capped off and a small pipe fitted.. I filed some caps for the fuel/oil filler pipes, these are filed from 2.25mm brass rod. The brass filler caps and the radiators where glued on using 5 minute epoxy while the small copper pipes where glued with CA. The nose of the aeroplane has been painted with Gunze off-white.

Thanks guys for your very kind comments.

I have had a few days away so not much has been done. After a 5 hour drive back home I managed to paint the fuselage today using Hobby Color H21 Off White, it is a full gloss at the moment but will be finished as a satin after decals are applied. I removed the rudder and fitted two 0.4mm brass tube pins in the fin, holes in the rudder will allow the rudder to be refitted once painted and decals applied.

I downloaded and printed the plans for the jig from the CSM website, it would be extremely difficult to fit the wings without the jig as no instructions are included with the kit. I used a stiff corrugated cardboard for the jig and glued it using PVA white glue, it ended up being quite strong, it also has provisions for fitment of the top wing. The jig holds the fuselage very firm and will make fitting the wings a lot easier. Before proceeding any further I need to fit the undercarriage to the bottom wing, this will ensure the bottom wing remains level,I will also paint the bottom wing before adding any struts.

I fitted the undercarriage using the kit supplied resin parts, it fitted quite well and surprisingly is quite strong, the wheels are also fitted. I added rib tapes to the top of the bottom wing using 0.75mm masking tape, original photos of the aircraft show large/ish tapes. The PE wing reinforcing plates have been added to the top and bottom of the wing, I have left these as the original metal colour while the rest of the wing has been painted with Hobby Color H21 Off-White. I also applied the roundels to the bottom of the wing, the decals went on really well. The fuel tank has been fitted to the centre of the bottom wing and painted with Hobby Color H334 Barley Gray, the undercarriage has been painted with the same colour.

I removed the rudder and decided to paint it instead of using the decals (the decal colours are back to front having the red at the front). Firstly I painted the rudder white using Hobby Color H1 gloss White, once dry I taped the rudder and painted the blue which is Humbrol 48 Gloss Mediterranean enamel then the red which is again Humbrol 19 Gloss Red enamel, decals will be applied once the paint has had time to cure (I always allow enamels to dry for 48 hours)

I added the fuselage decals tonight, the decals went on okay and did not need any decal set solution, I set the decals with a hair dryer.  Tomorrow I will clear coat the bottom wing and the fuselage with a satin coat.

Beautiful paint work, Des, and the decals went on perfectly as well. The jig looks excellent, I can't imagine how this type of design could be properly assembled without it. This is going to be a spectacular model of a very unusual subject; you are doing a really fine job on it!
Cheers,

My many thanks to Lance, Rick and Bud for your very kind comments.

I have fitted the fuselage/bottom wing struts which now holds everything together very firmly. Fitting these struts without the jig would have been near impossible. I removed all of the resin strut pins and replaced them with 0.5mm copper wire, I also drilled 0.5mm holes in the fuselage and wing to accept the struts, CA holds them together. I have to admit, I am really enjoying this build even though it is not my usual scale.

Des, this is fantastic! I am embarrassed by your speedy builds. I'm still plodding along on the Canuck! All the sub-assemblies are done, but I don't seem to be able to get to the finish line. My 1/12 Lotus 49 project has completely consumed me.
Your workmanship and problem solving are brilliant. We can't wait to see this "thing" finished, so you can get going on the 1/32 version.
All the best to you, Des.

I managed to fit the port side propeller drive gearbox unit, finding the correct struts for each location took most of my time but once sorted out it went together reasonably well. I also made and fitted the tail skid, the kit supplied tail skid is only PE and was very flimsy so I made mine from various sizes of brass tube. The head-on photo shows the streamline effect of having the engine mounted sideways inside the fuselage.

Thanks guys for stopping by and leaving your much appreciated comments.

When fitting the struts I cut off the resin pins and replace them with 0.5mm copper wire, I drill a 0.6mm hole into the end of the struts then CA the copper wire, the wire can then be cut and bent to shape, it is very easy to work with but makes a strong connection.

I finished the two propeller drive gearbox units and fitted them to the bottom wing, the main drive from the engine to the two gearbox units are also fitted. I was very surprised at how easy it was to fit these units, finding the correct length strut is crucial but having scale plans to compare each strut makes life very easy. Once the correct struts were found both units virtually fell together

And even more struts. I have fitted the struts from the propeller mounts to take the top wing, I made a small jig that fitted across the pins on each pair of struts just to make sure everything was aligned, and this isn't the end, there are still more struts to be fitted.

Thank you to Stefan, Ian, Mark and Ermeio for your very kind comments.

Ian, it is very hard to tell from B&W photos what colour certain items are, to me all the struts look the same colour. CSM say that the struts are painted a light gray but a colour profile I printed out shows them as being a wood colour. The drive shaft is inside the streamlined strut so it could be either wood or metal, hard to tell from original photos. I may decide to change the colour of those two struts to gray.

Stefan, the jig is an extremely simple device, just a length of 1.0mm x 1.5mm styrene strip with 0.8mm holes drilled to slip over the pins in the ends of the struts. Dimensions for the hole locations are taken from the scale plans. Sometimes the simplest ideas work the best.

Thanks Richard for dropping by and leaving much appreciated comments.

I managed to complete the top wing today, all I need to do is give it a coat of satin clear. For the rib tapes I used Bobs Buckles 1.0mm strippers. The top wing is only sitting in position for photo purposes, once the entire model is sprayed with a satin clear I will fit the top wing. I had to remove the front and rear parts of the jig to allow the model to still sit inside the jig for top wing fitment. I also assembled and fitted the front machine gun.

Blimey Des - I miss a week and you make half of the model!  That is really looking good and the level of detail is remarkable. I have bookmarked this blog because it will provide me with excellent ideas to follow later.

The jigs which you have constructed are also first class and just after my own spirit - cheap, easy and simple. The struts arrangement remind me strongly of the HB CC which would also have been impossible to put together without jigs. A complex arrangement of struts and propulsion shafts there - but all exciting things to model. Your model will be one to emulate as usual.

Title: Re: CSM Salmsom-Moineau S.M.1 1:48 scale

Looking at some Hi-Res photos I realised that there are rigging wires between the X struts on the propeller drive units, I have just sprayed the model with a coat of satin clear so it will have to sit overnight before I can start the rigging. There are no rigging attachment points anywhere on the model so I will have to make a heap of small eyelets, I will probably use 0.1mm elastic sewing thread as this will be a more appropriate scale size.
Here are photos of the model with the clear satin applied, the top wing is only just sitting in position.

Thank you Gregory for your very kind comments, I always much appreciate hearing from you.

The top wing has now been fitted and most of the rigging completed. I used Modelkasten 0.13mm elastic rigging thread and CA to hold it together. I still need to fit two more struts from the rear of the wing to the fuselage, but my kit is missing more struts which are supposed to go from the front of the wing to the fuselage, I replaced these with rigging wire. With the use of the jig the top wing fitted reasonable well with no major issues.

It's rather brave (as in "asking for trouble") to add the front MG before attaching the top wing. I would never dare to do so - but you succeeded. Well done.

You have done a masterful job of mounting the upper wing and the rigging is brilliant as always! Your build has certainly made me aware of a little known but rather cool looking Aircraft! So if WNW ever does one...

Des, as always your rigging is perfect and it really brings this beautiful beast to life!  I can't wait to get to work on mine.
Just out of curiosity, I took a look at the Copper State website and noticed that they only have one of these left in stock, so if anyone else wants to build one, you'd better jump on it.

Thank you Stefan for your kind comments and yes, it was brave, and stupid, to mount the front machine gun before the top wing, but luckily all went well.

Your comments are always appreciated Rick, I doubt you will ever see one of these aircraft come out of the Wingnuts factory.

Bud, many thanks for your more than welcome words, the numbers shown on the CSM website are incorrect, I think he still has around 150 kits left (Edgar may correct me on this figure)

Thanks Borsos for your comments, the jungle of struts made fitting the top wing a little troublesome but after a bit of time it all fell into place and is very strong.

I'm calling this one done. I completed all the rigging and control rigging, fitted the rear machine gun and fitted the propellers.

When I took on this build it was way out of my comfort zone being 1:48 scale and resin but in all honesty I have truly enjoyed the build. The kit is quite complex and only suitable for capable or experienced modelers with knowledge in the use of resin and CA. For a limited run kit it did not pose too many issues and what issues did arise were quite easily overcome. Some of the resin parts were extremely fragile so I opted to fabricate the parts myself. My only criticism of the kit is the lack of instructions, even basic instructions would have been a huge benefit. I take my hat off to CSM for producing such a wonderful kit of a somewhat unusual subject and now that I have completed the model I would highly recommend this kit, remember, it is a limited run so grab one before they all run out.

Des, what an absolutely stunning work of art you've created!  This is the first of this kit that I've seen completed and I can't stop looking at it!  In 2009, when Eric Hight, founder and former owner of Copper State Models, told me that Marty Digmayer was working on the master for this kit, I had only seen just a few photos of the S.M.1 and knew almost nothing about it.  I started digging into it and became excited about the release of the kit to the point where I hounded Eric about it almost weekly.  As it turned out, it wasn't until Ilya Sobolev and Slava Krylov bought the company from Eric, that this kit got produced.  I bought one immediately and was impressed with the improved quality of the resin and the flawless casting, yet it sat in my stash all these years. You've got me itchin' to build it now, mate, with this gorgeous model you've presented to us.  Thanks for taking this on and reigniting my excitement for this freak of aviation!
Cheers,
Bud

Des I would wish to echo what has already been written. This is a type of which I was utterly ignorant yet it looks to be a real challenge to build and a satisfying one when it is complete. The quality of your workmanship and modelling skills need  no further comment - you had done real justice to this kit and I hope too that others will buy it and give it a try.

it turned out so nice des. i hop it has given an appreciation and interest in 1/48. as you well know there are much more different types kitted in this scale. even more in 1/72 but to me 1/72 is just too small to do the level of detail i enjoy yet 1/48 is not too big as to cause storage issues for built models. i hope to see you build more 1/48 someday

Des, as I often say in marvelling at your builds, you are a world class modeller and your builds are inspirational and worthy of display in the finest museums.

The SM.1 is breathtaking, even more so as 1/48 is not your preferred scale and you achieved this spectacular result from a kit with no instructions!

Flawless as ever!

Hello Des.
First I have to say "Hammer das Teil" that means something like... great.
I was 3 weeks with some friends and my little family on vacation.
I had no Internet on this small island (Borkum) and often thought how far your progress on this plane would be.
To see it now finished it is just unbelievable stunning!
Just great!!!

Bob, I think with my capabilities I will not be dropping any smaller than 1:48 scale, I had my go at 1:72 and 1:144 when I was a lot lot younger.
