I am really glad you like the result so far, it is a great encouragement for me, many thanks!

Eventually I decided to choose a different camo, as Bäumer's kite would be really difficult to paint (especially the Edelweiss on the fuselage side and the red outlines on the green tail). That is why I will build Manfred's machine and I would like to ask you for advice.

I will use the DB Kraplak for the red parts and would like to use its translucency effect to show the various colours underneath. Is there any reliable information on what specific scheme was under the red colour on this particular machine? Means green-mauve, green-reddish brown-pale green etc.? Many thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers

Ondra

Green / mauve. I think the red brown had been completely phased out by the time the D.V went into production.

Thanks for the quick help, Bo! I saw a few photos of D.Va's with red brown on upper wing but I share your opinion, red brown on D.Va's is very rare and I assume those upper wings were simply cannibalised from D.IIIs.

I will go for mauve - green - mauve on wings and on tail too, hopefully that will not be completely wrong. So far I have not been able to find any system in the colour combination.

Des, many thanks for moving the thread!

My apologies to all for the long time off the forum. Last weeks were very busy in the professional as well as personal area.

Some progress on the fuselage, it is almost ready for painting, I already applied the greyish green using the DB paints. The zinc white has very good covering, which is why the fuselage was really difficult to photograph - the white is too shiny.  :) Another consequence is that the greyish green appears rather dark on the photos.

As mentioned before, I used Bo's 3D printed Mercedes D.III engines, they are really excellent! I just added the exhaust painting it with Caput Mortuum and a coat of Prussian blue to simulate the burnt metal at the end of the exhaust.

For the wings I used DB paints as well, I want to take advantage of the translucent effects of Kraplak, that is why I took a bit more care than might be necessary. I tried to apply preshading on both side of the wings, on the upper side it will definitely disappear under the coat of red, but the contrast of varying base colours should remain visible.

Currently I am dealing with the radiator, so far I have not found yet a proper method to make it look the part.

Cheers

Ondra

Dear friends,

first of all please let me thank you all for the great support and help you gave me this year and wish you all the best for the upcoming one!

I used the vacation this week and made a little progress on my Albie.

I am not very happy with the radiator and will give it another try, we will see what the result will look like. One question to Albatros experts - what colour was the radiator? Was it the typical Albatros greyish-green?

I prepainted the camouflage on the tail to use the translucency of DB Kraplak, should make a nice effect. Stil not sure though whether I will not change my mind and build Bäumer's D.V from Jasta 5 anyway...

The wing and fuselage struts are made from evergreen profiles, undercarriage struts are from brass rod.

I simply like the propeller :)

This is the overview of the main parts, stil a lot of work ahead, though.

Cheers

Ondra

Absolutely superb Ondra, the propeller is amazing as are all the other tiny parts, this will be a real treat to see it all go together.

Outstanding work especially in this scale.  More like micro engineering than modelling

Ondra,
Just amazing work! I find myself having to remember just how TINY this beautiful build really is! Great painting to date. I am looking forward to the red see through overpaint, should be spectacular!

Ondra,
My apologies for being late to this one. Simply beautiful. Your propeller . . . I wish I could replicate it at twice the size in 1/72nd. Did you use a "sandwich" method of different colored plastics and then carve it out?

Many thanks to Des, Toby, Rick, Warren and George for the positive feedback, your encouraging comments mean a lot to me!

to WarrenD: Yes, correct, I used the sandwich method. Finally I have found red plastic sheets, Hellboy helped me find a method to sand the 1mm sheet to 0.1 mm thickness. It was a very positive surprise to me how good it looks with light ochre oil paint wood effect applied on it.
