Fokker Funfdecker
« on: June 03, 2025, 01:17:06 PM »
I needed a relaxing, nostalgic build for my next project. I?ve always wanted to build this kit but not willing to pay the exorbitant price for an 1973 original. I found an open but complete Chinese re-issue on EBay for cheap. The plan is to build a unique livery and add a little extra detail. My biggest challenge will be painting the figure. I?ve never been any good at figures and always avoided them.

The kit consists of three sprues of red molded parts and one sprue of heavy chrome plated parts:

The fuselage and Barron figure have an excellent fit despite the age of the molds

.

There are some problematic mold releases on the flying surface undersides.
These were filed off and filled with putty, then sanded smooth.

Next I started adding some Dr.1 details.

.

The Barron was primed with Tamiya white, then overpainted flat black.

After the black dried, I lightly sprayed flat white from a topside angle. This highlights the raised areas.

.

Next I began applying light glaze washes of Tamiya flesh tone. I only have two layers here before I had to wrap up till next weekend.
.

I?m having great fun doing something different and learning new techniques. Looking forward to building up the Hemi engine!

Thanks for looking in!
Tim

Off to a flying start Tim (Sorry couldn't resist)  ;)

I remember building one of these or something very similar when younger as well as a Me109 which were great fun. Nice to see what this one ends up looking like with a bit more pizazz added  8)

That is great fun! I used to build some of these kits as a kid and I'm often tempted when I see them at shows. I will enjoy this build.

Great start Tim,
I have that kit and am planning to do it like MvR's 152/17 and without the V8...

My decals, (stickers?) are toast so masks and paint...
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

I thought about that livery at first as well. I?ve opted to go a little more colorful route. Looking forward to seeing your results on your kit Allan.

Part2.

Moving along with the build. I?ve added more details to the fuselage. Punched Evergreen discs for the tacks on the cockpit combing, leather supports for the control cable openings, and rivets on the firewall.

The Spandau guns were replaced with 1/28 scale guns from the Revell Dr.1 kit. I really wanted to add photo etch gun jackets but can?t find Toms model works set.  Gaspatch has offerings but too expensive for the likes of this model.  I also added gun rings made from brass wire.

More washes on Mr. Barron, added blond / gray hair making him an elderly sole.

I finished the light and dark face washes and began painting the uniform. I copied a German WWI uniform picture but have not researched what unit or rank it represents. I just liked the colors.

.

Not sure I?m liking the chrome pickelhelm. I have a plan to add a cover?

Thanks for looking in!

Tim, I'd give my left arm for this kit! (actually I wouldn't because I then wouldn't be able to build it). I saw one of these built a few years ago and thought then WOW! Looking forward to seeing you build this.

This is looking really cool. You are really tempting me if I ever see this kit on a second hand stall.....  :D
