Wingnut Wings Sopwith Pup

Hi all,

Far too long for a WWI build thread topic, but I’ve re built up a stash of Wingnuts starting from scratch. None of my previous builds have survived the test of time.

I thought I’d start with an ‘easy’ build - the Pup, and also I haven’t built this kit before so it’s inspiring for me.

I’ve finished up the cockpit which was a good refresh for WW1 modelling techniques! It’s been lovely as always from Wingnuts…

My workshop coaster is providing colour scheme inspiration!











I’ve got the ‘Gnome’ boxing so has the wrong engine for that scheme (in the RNAS boxing) so I’ll either try and find a Le Rhône 9c (any ideas?) or argue that it had an engine change!

That’s a great cockpit, lovely interior work. It’s one of the few Wingnut kits that I have allready build and so I can say that it’s pure fun as expected. Just be careful with those interplane struts, they are in the way not only once while working on the fuselage. I think it must have been a miracle that prevented me from breaking them.

Cooper state Nieuport XX1 has the Le Rhone 9C engine.
Ask them if they sell the  engine separately.

Yes, it’s a great kit as always, fit so far exceptional, but yes, those struts are shouting ‘break me’ aren’t they Andreas? I seemed to remember a post on here mentioning a fit issue with the lower wing? Or maybe I’ve got that wrong.

Good idea re the engine Spyros!

Great start Guy, and that cockpit is exceptionally clean work and detail! One of my favorite models and I hope to soon complete another which is my most treasured Stash resident. Enjoy as I will following your progress.

Yep, after spending so much time & money amassing a WNW’s stash, it seems almost criminal to make them!

Quick question: I’ve been reading Fredrik’s excellent build log on the Pup and am intrigued by the machined swirl on the aluminium cowlings… Anyone had any notable successes on this effect?

I have a half baked notion of creating the swirl on the plastic itself by lightly sanding ‘rings’, but I guess this would ruin the sheen?

What do you reckon?

Ps I’m meeting up with a man I don’t know in a car park tomorrow to buy some more elicit Wingnut kits… I somehow feel like someone buying drugs from a dealer. If I don’t check in tomorrow, better call the cops…

Nice progress on your build Guy. Happy to following this one.

On the topic of your "turned" aluminium pattern - I chatted with Ed Boll at an IPMS gathering a few years ago, and he had done a marvelous job on the firewall of one of his Fokker Dr.1's by spinning a pencil eraser over a silver finish to create the pattern. Can't quite remember the exact method, but the result looked quite convincing.
