Hi all,
Far too long for a WWI build thread topic, but I’ve re built up a stash of Wingnuts starting from scratch. None of my previous builds have survived the test of time.
I thought I’d start with an ‘easy’ build - the Pup, and also I haven’t built this kit before so it’s inspiring for me.
I’ve finished up the cockpit which was a good refresh for WW1 modelling techniques! It’s been lovely as always from Wingnuts…
My workshop coaster is providing colour scheme inspiration!

I’ve got the ‘Gnome’ boxing so has the wrong engine for that scheme (in the RNAS boxing) so I’ll either try and find a Le Rhône 9c (any ideas?) or argue that it had an engine change!
As ever good to have any comments, suggestions etc. Thanks for looking in, and good to be back.
Guy

„WOW“, so far! I do especially like your nod to my/our Airfix-nostalgia!
-
That’s a great cockpit, lovely interior work. It’s one of the few Wingnut kits that I have allready build and so I can say that it’s pure fun as expected. Just be careful with those interplane struts, they are in the way not only once while working on the fuselage. I think it must have been a miracle that prevented me from breaking them.
Andreas

Hi Guy
Cooper state Nieuport XX1 has the Le Rhone 9C engine.
Ask them if they sell the engine separately.
Spyros

Fantastic start Guy, I'm excited to follow along. Great choice of scheme too.
-
Ah thanks all!
Yes, it’s a great kit as always, fit so far exceptional, but yes, those struts are shouting ‘break me’ aren’t they Andreas? I seemed to remember a post on here mentioning a fit issue with the lower wing? Or maybe I’ve got that wrong.
Good idea re the engine Spyros!
Don’t we all love Airfix Nostalgia! ;D

I saw this on one of the Facebook pages I follow. Didn't realize it was yours. The wood grain looks awesome!
Cheers,
Hugh

Clean lines and subtle shading... most inspiring.
-
Good start Guy! Looks fantastic!
Things to help you finish will soon be with you!
/Fredrik
-
Excellent work on the interior. I’ve saved your photos for future reference.
-
Ah thanks chaps,
Just the same old techniques everyone uses…
Thanks Fredrik.. You’re a star!
Guy
-
Great start Guy, and that cockpit is exceptionally clean work and detail! One of my favorite models and I hope to soon complete another which is my most treasured Stash resident. Enjoy as I will following your progress.
Cheers,
Lance
-
Thanks Lance,
Yep, after spending so much time & money amassing a WNW’s stash, it seems almost criminal to make them!
Quick question: I’ve been reading Fredrik’s excellent build log on the Pup and am intrigued by the machined swirl on the aluminium cowlings… Anyone had any notable successes on this effect?
I have a half baked notion of creating the swirl on the plastic itself by lightly sanding ‘rings’, but I guess this would ruin the sheen?
What do you reckon?
Thanks,
Guy
Ps I’m meeting up with a man I don’t know in a car park tomorrow to buy some more elicit Wingnut kits… I somehow feel like someone buying drugs from a dealer. If I don’t check in tomorrow, better call the cops… :)
-
Nice progress on your build Guy. Happy to following this one.
On the topic of your "turned" aluminium pattern - I chatted with Ed Boll at an IPMS gathering a few years ago, and he had done a marvelous job on the firewall of one of his Fokker Dr.1's by spinning a pencil eraser over a silver finish to create the pattern. Can't quite remember the exact method, but the result looked quite convincing.
Cheers,
Gary

This engine would suit I think http://www.taurusmodels.pl/3239.html Although you might end up in the funny farm putting it together!!
Cheers

Beautiful work...
-
Thanks Gary, Andrew & Xan,
Gary, that’s a bit teasing! I guess I’ll have to experiment a bit!
Andrew, golly that engine is insane! I would be tempted if it were exposed like the DH.2. But it’s all cowled up - I put the kit Gnome together last night, and it looks more than adequate in the cowling. I know it’s not correct, but it wouldn’t bother me at all, I’m probably just worrying about others’ opinions!
It’s coming along, for a Wingnuts it’s a quick, simple build.
I’ll post some pictures today of where I’m at…
Guy
-
Did you survive your encounter, or haven't you been yet?
From my point of view, it's your own opinion you should worry about... if you're happy with it, go for it. 😀
Do experiment. The basic idea sounds good.
/Fredrik
-
Yes, I did pull it off Fredrik :D
The cops sprang us but I made a quick getaway :)
Yep, that’s my thinking really.
Any further thoughts yourself re the cowling? I did like your rendition before you realised they should have been painted anyway! ;D
Guy
-
What swag did you make off with Guy? The great Wingnuts heist hasn't made the national news yet so you may not have to hole up in a safe house.
It's nice to see a Pup underway. I really wouldn't worry about it having a Gnome instead of a Le Rhone engine. It's got to be fun and what you've done so far looks terrific!

Have a look at this. The firewall, go down a bit. https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=11829.msg220411#msg220411 (https://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=11829.msg220411#msg220411).
The problem is of course to get aluminium tape to follow all the curves.. but, with a polishable paint and a softer polish disc?!
/Fredrik
-
Thanks Fredrik,
But I won’t be able to foil it all, I’ll experiment!
Guy
-
Just a pre paint update!
Super kit so far, but I have had to sand a bit off the engine push rods to get the cowling to fit - probably me…
Also a sliver of filler along the wing root, but everything just clicks into place.
Thanks
Guy

Evening,
The RNAS Pups were painted in ‘Proprietary Khaki’ - their version of PC10.
How did they differ?
Guy
-
Afternoon all,
Re the Proprietary Khaki, I just went with PC10 in the end.
But further on, some subtle (hopefully) shading and oil work :)

Just catching up. Very nice work. I'm so glad these WNW are being built.

It’s ok for me to build them Steve,
Just not anyone else! ;D
They won’t be around for ever…

Beautiful work. Your wood effects are top tier and I really like the PC-10 coloring.
-
Thanks,
Engine wise I think I will stick to Wingnuts for closed cowl machines but will try and get Taurus one for exposed engines like the DH.2, Fokker E etc. it’s just it’s impossible to have a clean join along the cooling fins - and they’re very visible outside of a cowl!

Thanks Tim,
The paints are all my favourite MRPs - they do Early & Late PC10/ PC12/ 3 Linen shades and a couple of other dedicated WWI colours - but unfortunately not the German Mauves, Greens etc…

Hi matey
Was actually going to do this scheme but am living happily vicariously through your build. Very clean, lovely paint application.
I tried to paint some very thin strip for the wood on the inner fuselage cockpit. However it messed up the fit a bit. So I guess you just need some magnification, a thin brush and steady hand? Anyway looking forward to the end result :)
-
Hi :)
I airbrushed mine - it’s hard to paint accurately with a brush… I masked the horizontal bars first, painted those, then masked the verticals.. just saves complicated masking!
Hope that helps..

Apologies Richie, I seem to have missed your post somehow…
I made off with an SE5a, Hannover, 2 x Albatri & a Fokker E.IV… I’m still in hiding 8)
Guy
-
Haha, no apologies needed Guy! The SE5a on its own would have been a fine haul. I gave a Fokker EIV to my brother before the WNW balloon went pop, it's still just sitting his stash!
The Pup is looking excellent, I must get round to building mine one day.

Just a couple of snaps from the bench ;)
Masks for markings and just the aluminium to go, then it’s rigging! :P

You do, and I love it already!
Thanks for the tip ;)

Looking good Guy, looking very good.
I love my sanding pen already too, what a great little tool!
Richie

Great work with the markings!
I think I 'need' a sanding pen as well... I might even 'deserve' one, don't you think?! 😄

Very nice build all around. I like the clean look of the interior with lovely wood-linen contrast.

Very nice update. Sanding pens for all!!

Ah thanks ;)
Quick update, tail rigging done…

Your photos look great, Guy. Are you using a lighting “tent” as a diffuser?
Regards,
Gary
-
Hi Gary,
No, I did try that but found it just blocked all the light out, so now I have the lighting un-diffused and as close up as possible!
To get the depth of field it needs to be bright…

Well - if it's any consolation, I recently bought a 4-foot tent with all the various back-drops and velcro & zippers and found exactly the same thing, so it's direct lighting for me too, with four 500Watt daylight bulbs placed strategically on tripods ;)

Absolute fantastic work. I love the clean work and the subtle shading on the rudder. What a great progress!

I had missed that! I suppose that it has to do with the painting process? Looks fantastic!
I'm also very happy that the serial numbers worked out.
Almost finished?

Thanks guys,
Yep, I’m enjoying the build, quite simple but still seems to take a long time!
The shading is a bit of pre shading followed by some pastel work, I haven’t really used these before but I’m liking the effect. It’s a little more controllable than airbrushing.. but I’m still learning!

Your Pup and Photos look awesome!

Ah,
Thanks Rick ;D
