HB W.29 Aircraft 2760 in British Markings
« on: August 28, 2020, 03:54:42 AM »
I am on a W.29 building kick. Next up is in the W.29 in British markings. The British Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment received W.29 number 2670 as "war bootie". The airplane was in the typical German Marine colors with the floats being varnished wood instead of the tar covered black or lozenge/grey. It was repainted sea green or "palish green" while it was being evaluated at the Isle of Grain test facility. Being a latter built W.29 it was fitted with the 185 hp Benz Bz.IIIa engine and had only one exhaust on the starboard side instead of the more typical 150hp Benz Bz.III engine with the six exhaust on port side  There is just something about the W.29 in different colors and markings.

I have been away from my bench way too long. I have started working on the wood inside the cockpit. I was able to find an elusive Sprue E of the Benz BZ IIIa engine from the Roland D.VIb kit. I lost the seat cushion from the kit and I used an extra cushion provided from one of BarracudaCast's RFC wicker seats.

I missed this first time around. I agree that aircraft in non - standard markings are always more interesting. I will be following more closely after seeing such a very good start.

Stephen.

Thank you so much. I keep wanting to try the decals; but I keep going back to the oils.

Thank you. I really liked the wood until I went back after it dried and I don't know. The nice thing is you don't see much of the cockpit after its buttoned up...

After way too much time with work and home improvements I was able to get back to this project. After the third attempt on painting the roundels on the wings I finally got something I liked, even though the outer white ring still isn't symmetrical. The gridded Tamiya masking sheets are great for smaller stencils; I don't know if my circle cutter wasn't round or I stretched the masking sheet tape out of shape.

According the British Maritime Report the floats were wood and not painted, so I used oils and made the floats look like a dark wood. They look kind of rough and I am thinking about spraying some weathered black over them as if they were in the process of being treated when the war ended.

I think you have done an outstanding job on all, including the roundels! The floats look fine to Me but it is your build  8)
