I am on a W.29 building kick. Next up is in the W.29 in British markings. The British Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment received W.29 number 2670 as "war bootie". The airplane was in the typical German Marine colors with the floats being varnished wood instead of the tar covered black or lozenge/grey. It was repainted sea green or "palish green" while it was being evaluated at the Isle of Grain test facility. Being a latter built W.29 it was fitted with the 185 hp Benz Bz.IIIa engine and had only one exhaust on the starboard side instead of the more typical 150hp Benz Bz.III engine with the six exhaust on port side There is just something about the W.29 in different colors and markings.

I have been away from my bench way too long. I have started working on the wood inside the cockpit. I was able to find an elusive Sprue E of the Benz BZ IIIa engine from the Roland D.VIb kit. I lost the seat cushion from the kit and I used an extra cushion provided from one of BarracudaCast's RFC wicker seats.

Thank you so much. I keep wanting to try the decals; but I keep going back to the oils.

Thank you. I really liked the wood until I went back after it dried and I don't know. The nice thing is you don't see much of the cockpit after its buttoned up...

After way too much time with work and home improvements I was able to get back to this project. After the third attempt on painting the roundels on the wings I finally got something I liked, even though the outer white ring still isn't symmetrical. The gridded Tamiya masking sheets are great for smaller stencils; I don't know if my circle cutter wasn't round or I stretched the masking sheet tape out of shape.

According the British Maritime Report the floats were wood and not painted, so I used oils and made the floats look like a dark wood. They look kind of rough and I am thinking about spraying some weathered black over them as if they were in the process of being treated when the war ended.

WOW, Carl! I’ve just seen your thread. Great topic: I love those well known airplanes with a „twist“! Will follow your build eagerly.

Indeed a great topic. I like the floats as they are but I can understand why you want to spray some weathered black.

I redid the floats. I lightly sanded the oil paints and put on some Proper Plane light wood decals. Then I sprayed some Tamiya clear yellow and sealed with an Alclad gloss coat. I like it better than the original.

Finally had an opportunity to work on the engine. This is the 185hp Benz Bz.IIIa from the Roland D.VIb. The later W.29's were upgraded from the 150hp Benz Bz.III. I added .3mm plastic rod for the lifters, twisted copper wire for the sparkplug wires, and pieces from HGW's Bz.III engine set. Still much more work to do; but, it was nice to finally get started again.

Thank you. The whole painted markings thing has really gotten me started. My wife gave me a Silouhette Portrait cutter for Christmas so I can make stencils more accurately. I'm thinking tracing is easier and cutting by hand...

I got side-tracked form the engine to work on the front radiator since it is different from the Bz.III. I have started scratch-building the radiator to hopefully use to make some 3D printed parts.
The Benz Bz.IIIa radiator:
The Bz.III radiator

My start on the radiator:
I just need to cut the existing radiator off the front cowling part and attach the new one. Unfortunately, I may need to drink copious amounts of bourbon to get the nerve to cut it...

Nice work on the new radiator. Have fun getting ready to make that cut ;D

Yes cutting up a good kit is not always easy, but grit your teeth and just cut - it will be better than you think!

Well...I did it!! Looks better than I thought. Thanks Rick and Stephen for the vote of confidence.

I taped the two together and I think this will work. Now, I just need to find a radiator mesh and cut the hole for the coolant hose. May be this whole scratch-building thing isn't so bad...

While I was pondering my next step with the new radiator I decided to assemble the cockpit. Its amazing that I started this in late 2020 and I noticed I apparently, I lost two parts so far... the rear bulkhead, A26, and the late production elevator, B5,... I hate it when I mess it myself... I fashioned a new bulkhead with some spare sheet plastic and I'll figure out the elevator later. Anyway, the cockpit framing is assembled and the fuselage together!! It is starting to look like an airplane!!!

Thank you. The bad thing is I put pieces in various containers so I don't lose them... I am always surprised how fast everything moves when the woodwork is done.

Another update. I placed the Bz.IIIa engine in the engine compartment and the locating pins on the bottom of the engine line up perfectly with the notches in the support. I temporarily attached the front cowling and everything fit pretty well. I do need to notch a bit off the cowling lip some for a closer fit.

After cleaning up the fuselage and the cockpit coaming I thought I would put the wings on to see how it would look...and I LIKE IT!!! I worked on the radiator some more and I think I probably need to make it thicker; but, I'm happy with the overall shape. The radiator hose from the engine doesn't quite reach the radiator, so I will switch out the plastic molded part and add a length of solder in its place.

The plane definitely looks different when it’s wearing something other than German colors. It’s too bad the British and US didn’t use the plane like other countries did.

Thank you. I was thinking backward. I painted the green for the plane, then the white stencil, and then put the outline mask in and paint the black. I should have painted the black, placed the numbers on and painted the green, and then placed the stencil around the numbers and painted the white. I’ll know next time...

I finished the engine and weathered it a little bit. I then installed it on the mounts and installed the front cowling.

Things are really moving now. I measured thrice and cut once and I stilled messed up. I should have made the radiator thicker...oh, well. The cowlings are on, the anemometer installed, tachometer and wire installed, added the radiator hose from the engine to inside the radiator opening, and the wings put on. I put the sheathed Axial prop on. The propeller in the 2670 picture looks thinner than the Niendorf so I’m debating. Working on the floats for the next update.

Thank you so much. The W.29 kit comes with three props; Neindorf, Heine, and Axial all with the sheathing molded on. I airbrushed the sheathing with brass paint. I had a gorgeous Proper Plane prop to use; but, it didn't meet the profile in the pictures, so I opted for the "old school" method.

I redid the floats. I painted them with a mixture of 50/50 Tamiya Black Oil and NATO Brown. I then lightly sanded the strips on top to show the wood beneath. I also added the center ring on the float brace like I did with my HM1 build and attached the wires to the plate at the four attachment points on the floats.

Started a new job so I have hadn’t had much time to work on 2670. I finally was able to install the ailerons, rudder, and stabilizer. I put on a new radiator cap and finished the fiddly bits. I replaced the Axial propeller with the Hein because I think it looks more like the one in the picture. It’s almost finished.

Slow progress the past week. Working on the base and I noticed that the British used what looks like a lobster trap to prop up the floats so I looked up the dimensions of a lobster trap and converted it to 1/32 scale and made a trap. Just need to paint it; I think it captures the look.
