Roden 1/32 Fokker Dr.I Josef Jacobs
« on: June 01, 2020, 12:24:39 AM »
Started this several days ago.  Was waiting for the WNW Dr.I, but I'm not counting on that happening!
When I saw Jacobs ride, I knew it was the one I would build.  I'm not going to get too detailed here, just a nice shelf build (of course, it won't be OOB).

[/url

I used the WNW reference pics and Kent Karlsen's build thread on his magnificent Fokker diorama as references.

This was also a chance to try HGW's wood decals.

I have the cockpit completed.

And a CSM engine.  Yes, its the right one for this plane.

The next hurdle is the cowling.  I've ordered an Aviattic cowling, but I don't know if it will fit around this engine.  If not, I will be making one.

Oh, Ken is doing a Triplane :thumbs up:
I'm in after this great start!

I only think, the Fokker green could be a bit more darker, as done by the "Fokker Team Schorndorf"

But if the fuselage is closed, it will be look darker inside.

Cheers,
Frank

Nothing "too detailed here" indeed Ken!! Beautiful start with the cockpit. (I'd like to see your version of a really detailed one!)  :o ;) A really nice little kit and it will be spectacular in Jacob's black livery.
Cheers,
Lance

One of my all time favorites when it comes to triplanes. I am keen on following your progress.

Glad to have all of you along.
Frank, yes the color I chose is lighter than that in the picture.  I had a darker one that looked too dark.  Probably should have mixed them.
Thanks for stopping in, Richie, Rick, and Andreas.
Lance, I guess there's not much detail left out!  I didn't have a picture of Josef's cockpit, so I winged it, erring on the side of leaving out detail rather than adding detail that wasn't there.  I suspect there was a pulseometer somewhere, but that is omitted.
I have the fuse closed up now.  Onward!

Perfect timing Ken Thank You  :)

I can get ideas and learnings from yours whilst I am doing my Merit Dr1, my only challenge is not to get too disheartened when I see the difference in quality and detail......

Super start Ken. If this model is not too detailed then what would one be like that was? The model will be very striking indeed in Jacob's scheme.

A quick update.
The big challenge so far is the graphics, but the cowling is looming near!

I am using some PE details from Tom's Modelworks - like PE control horns. Here you can see where I reinforced the elevator to the horizontal stab in the center with a strip of metal.  The actual planes have a hinge point there.  Later I added PE control wire exits.

Now, about those graphics. The 'God of the North' graphic on the decal sheet looks nothing like what I think the actual one does.  I found a picture of Jacobs plane on the IPMS Stockholm? website.  There, someone took the picture and enhanced it to create an accurate graphic.  I believe this is a good depiction of the real one.  I took the image and made a decal from it, but I only have clear decal film, so I made a mask for the background to place the decal over.  I traced the image using my Silhouette cutter, along with masks for the crosses - that thing is coming in handy.  Now I painted a white base where the crosses are, and where the God graphic goes.  I've placed the masks and now getting ready to paint black.

On to the cowling.  I ordered an Aviattic cowling - very nice piece.  Unfortunately, it's just a few thousandths of an inch too small for the CSM motor, so I'll be machining one.  Haven't figured out how to handle the small rivet detail yet.  Just getting to that point will be an accomplishment.

I'll be focused on the painting for a few days - if I have some paint I want to use.

Till next time... Keep on modeling.
