Started this several days ago. Was waiting for the WNW Dr.I, but I'm not counting on that happening!
When I saw Jacobs ride, I knew it was the one I would build. I'm not going to get too detailed here, just a nice shelf build (of course, it won't be OOB).
I used the WNW reference pics and Kent Karlsen's build thread on his magnificent Fokker diorama as references.
This was also a chance to try HGW's wood decals.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Bv5JXKVT/Fokker-Dr1-02.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I have the cockpit completed.

(https://i.postimg.cc/8PqG448d/Fokker-Dr1-09.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
And a CSM engine. Yes, its the right one for this plane.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qvyT5K0P/Fokker-Dr1-11.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The next hurdle is the cowling. I've ordered an Aviattic cowling, but I don't know if it will fit around this engine. If not, I will be making one.
-
Oh, Ken is doing a Triplane :thumbs up:
I'm in after this great start!
I only think, the Fokker green could be a bit more darker, as done by the "Fokker Team Schorndorf"
Source: airventure.de
But if the fuselage is closed, it will be look darker inside.
Cheers,
Frank
-
Fantastic start Ken, following in eager anticipation! :)
-
Beautiful Start! The interior looks amazing!
RAGIII

Nothing "too detailed here" indeed Ken!! Beautiful start with the cockpit. (I'd like to see your version of a really detailed one!) :o ;) A really nice little kit and it will be spectacular in Jacob's black livery.
Cheers,
Lance
-
One of my all time favorites when it comes to triplanes. I am keen on following your progress.
Andreas
-
Glad to have all of you along.
Frank, yes the color I chose is lighter than that in the picture. I had a darker one that looked too dark. Probably should have mixed them.
Thanks for stopping in, Richie, Rick, and Andreas.
Lance, I guess there's not much detail left out! I didn't have a picture of Josef's cockpit, so I winged it, erring on the side of leaving out detail rather than adding detail that wasn't there. I suspect there was a pulseometer somewhere, but that is omitted.
I have the fuse closed up now. Onward!
-
Perfect timing Ken Thank You :)
I can get ideas and learnings from yours whilst I am doing my Merit Dr1, my only challenge is not to get too disheartened when I see the difference in quality and detail......
Dino
-
Super start Ken. If this model is not too detailed then what would one be like that was? The model will be very striking indeed in Jacob's scheme.
Stephen.
-
Following along on this adventure , very nice job on the pit :)
Terri

loving the cockpit detail and that engine looks fantastic
-
Great cockpit and engine, I will follow with interest.

A quick update.
The big challenge so far is the graphics, but the cowling is looming near!
I am using some PE details from Tom's Modelworks - like PE control horns. Here you can see where I reinforced the elevator to the horizontal stab in the center with a strip of metal. The actual planes have a hinge point there. Later I added PE control wire exits.
(https://i.postimg.cc/6QXTJmKh/Fokker-Dr1-12.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Now, about those graphics. The 'God of the North' graphic on the decal sheet looks nothing like what I think the actual one does. I found a picture of Jacobs plane on the IPMS Stockholm? website. There, someone took the picture and enhanced it to create an accurate graphic. I believe this is a good depiction of the real one. I took the image and made a decal from it, but I only have clear decal film, so I made a mask for the background to place the decal over. I traced the image using my Silhouette cutter, along with masks for the crosses - that thing is coming in handy. Now I painted a white base where the crosses are, and where the God graphic goes. I've placed the masks and now getting ready to paint black.
(https://i.postimg.cc/qRBRg6zh/Fokker-Dr1-15.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/7LnhxnYr/Fokker-Dr1-14.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
On to the cowling. I ordered an Aviattic cowling - very nice piece. Unfortunately, it's just a few thousandths of an inch too small for the CSM motor, so I'll be machining one. Haven't figured out how to handle the small rivet detail yet. Just getting to that point will be an accomplishment.
(https://i.postimg.cc/8PxjwCn9/Fokker-Dr1-13.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'll be focused on the painting for a few days - if I have some paint I want to use.
Till next time... Keep on modeling.
-
I am extremely impressed with the Mask for the God of the North Wind! Looking awesome Ken!

Second what Rick said :)

Off to a great start! I was also waiting for the WNW triplane. I wonder how many of these Roden kits will sell since the news out of New Zealand. I picked up the PE set from Aviattic for mine; I'll be following your build for when it's time to start mine.
-
Liking this very much Ken. The masks look great, looking forward to seeing the resulting paint job.
I'm finding my cutter has opened up many possibilities too.
-
Impressive!
-
Just found this Ken - the cockpit frame is truly first class and the engine matches in quality.
Stephen.
-
Lovely modeling going on here - very nicely done and I, too, love the painting. I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since I built my Roden Dr1! Thanks for sharing, I’ll be watching the rest with anticipation!

Thank you all for the kind comments. The Silhouette cutter is very useful.
Here is the fuse painted using the masks for the GONW graphic and the national insignia. I used Testors enamels, which are taking a while to cure to a hard surface. I'll coat with a couple of layers of Future to get a hard acrylic surface that will resist fingerprints which show up very clearly on a gloss black surface.
(https://i.postimg.cc/YjKzNX7D/Fokker-Dr1-17.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Here I've placed the decal. I used Testors decal paper. I find the homemade decals need a white background, regardless of what colors are used.
(https://i.postimg.cc/pTSZrW6H/Fokker-Dr1-18.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I've started on a cowling, which I have been working on while paint is drying.
-
The GOTNW really looks outstanding Ken! Looking forward to seeing the cowling!
RAGIII
-
The transfer which you have printed looks as good as any aftermarket. What a stunning feature to have on a model.
Stephen.
-
Lovely decal making Ken, it's gone down beautifully too.
-
Awesome looking decal!

Some really nice work here Ken :)

Cowling time!
I am quite impressed with how this ended up looking. I hope I have no issues putting everything together.
Turning out the main shape. I used a file to shape the rounded part.
(https://i.postimg.cc/281DVHRW/Fokker-Dr1-19.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Drilling some simulated rivets.
(https://i.postimg.cc/Wz3Pm8dQ/Fokker-Dr1-20.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/MHFJ9BRX/Fokker-Dr1-21.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Cut the lower part out and shaped up the edges.
(https://i.postimg.cc/SsVhz3x6/Fokker-Dr1-22.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/BvTsJXWw/Fokker-Dr1-23.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Put a faceplate on.
Yea, its a reasonable facsimile of a cowling - I'm tickled pink.
(https://i.postimg.cc/BZY3Srys/Fokker-Dr1-24.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/cHdWC001/Fokker-Dr1-25.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Next is test fitting everything together before painting.
-
"Yea, its a reasonable facsimile of a cowling..."
That is a masterly understatement! I wish that I had access to a machine like that, and then the skill to be able to use it. I am envious...!
Stephen.

Yeah Stephen, You and Me both although I think your skills come closer than Mine! That is an AMAZING COWLING Ken, Just AMAZING!
RAGIII
-
Wow!!!! That is incredible Ken, perfect workmanship always leaves me with an astonished smile!
-
That cowling is drool worthy. What tool do you use to cut the fragile part?
-
Thanks for commenting, everyone. I'm gaining more experience machining these thin pieces but every one has a high pucker factor.
GazzaS - don't know which part you are referring to. Both parts are fragile. I machined the main cowling on a lathe and drilled the rivet detail on a mill. Then cut the cowling piece out using a jeweler's saw. The faceplate was drilled, then cut out using scissors, followed by filing into a final shape. I did some grinding on the cowling with a Dremel tool to thin it out more from the inside in a few spots.
I got the engine, cowling, and firewall fitted together, but had to cheat. The engine is pushed up against the firewall and I had to remake the firewall from thinner material to get everything together. Otherwise, the cowling would have had to be too thick, or wouldn't have fit over the engine.
-
Dame ! , I'm packing it in and selling everything off ! Super job on the cowl Ken , just outstanding ! 8)
Terri
-
WOW ... WOW... WOW ;D
-
Then cut the cowling piece out using a jeweler's saw.
This is what I wanted to know.
You see.... a while back.... I built the 1/48 Monogram B-29 and foiled it. But I wasn't happy with the way the foil looked around the canopy glass. So, I tried to make the whole canopy framing out of aluminum. I used a hammer and dies to beat a flat piece into the shape desired by shrinking. BUt one of the things that I never figured out was how I would cut out the holes for the clear parts without warping or mashing the framing. It's a moot point anyway as the project languished and finally got round-filed.
Thank you for your answer.
Gaz
-
Anytime, Gaz. I'm happy to explain in more detail how I fabricate things.
-
Oh yes Ken, that is the master template of Dr.I cowlings of the Fokker factory in Schwerin!
It looks better then the Cowling on my 1/8 Dr.I from Hasegawa under our living room roof. It is thin alu, but in one piece. Yours with the middle extra part is much more original.
Well done Sir!
If you will scratch one day a 1:1 aircraft I would fly with it because I have a deep trust in your work.
Cheers,
Frank
-
That cowl is a true thing of beauty :o
Bravo!
BC
-
Fantastic progress on the cowling and the decals!
Andreas
-
Frank - you'll have to wait awhile on that 1:1 airplane. I have too many models to build first!
Brad and Andreas - thanks for commenting.
Seems a shame to put paint over the aluminum cowl, but that's how it goes. I am continuing with painting the components and will soon be assembling them.
Just saw the Meng Dr.1 to be released. May have to get one.
-
That is also a interesting question: how do you prime alu? I had big trouble and prefer only alu parts if I can leave them unpainted.
Even CA do not hold, my best experience was the clear Gunze "Mr. Metal Primer" and let it cure long enough before painting the final color.
Cheer,
Frank
-
Absolutely wonderful work, Ken! The finesse and talent just take this to a new level... I am in Awe! Can't wait to see what transpires.. I will watch with great anticipation! Regards, Marc.
-
Thanks for commenting, Marc. I appreciate all the complements as they help keep the motivation high.
Frank, for aluminum, I have been using Tamiya white primer, sprayed on very thin leaving some metal showing through. Paint still scratches off easily though. I read that paint won't stick to aluminum because of the smooth surface, but I'm not totally convinced that is always the case. There are primers for aluminum available in stores here. It has a acid that etches the surface so paint sticks to it. I don't know what happens to the acid, though, whether it just stays on the part or get neutralized somehow. I may try some of it someday.
Anyway, time for an update. I've been working on numerous things, all in progress at this time.
Cowling painted black with smudged fingerprints on it.
(https://i.postimg.cc/rw8qh9rn/Fokker-Dr1-32.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
It has two out of three wings on it.
(https://i.postimg.cc/ryryzsTJ/Fokker-Dr1-26.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I can't believe how weak and spindly the landing gear legs are. There are no attachment points either. Hopefully, Meng/WNW has addressed this on their kit. I was drilling some shallow holes for the legs to locate in, when the drill blew through the fuse just above the wing root below the engine intake. Another repair job to do! One can see how easily dirt and dust shows up on a gloss black surface.
(https://i.postimg.cc/j5JTWgp5/Fokker-Dr1-27.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Jacob's plane had these reinforcing struts on the landing gear.
(https://i.postimg.cc/8CYDzQn9/Fokker-Dr1-28.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/L6F9PS6M/Fokker-Dr1-29.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Wheels. Don't know if the access to the valve was open or not.
(https://i.postimg.cc/0NjPv2Z7/Fokker-Dr1-30.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/kgfqLtNn/Fokker-Dr1-31.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Still many details to finish on these items I've shown.
-
Once again the cowling is amazing! The gloss black finish and markings are also gorgeous. I am sure you will have no issues repairing the Small Glitches.
RAGIII
-
There is so much to learn here, stunning work. It looks like you made the cowl so thin by machining down from the outside with the workpiece supported on a puck? Regards, Pete in RI
-
Hi Rick, thanks for commenting. A gloss black finish is one of the most difficult to pull off. The small glitches are repairable but annoying.
Pete - the cowling was machined from a solid bar, removing metal from the inside first, then flipped around in the lathe chuck for machining on the outside. Because it is so thin, it has to be supported on the inside with a 'puck' as you stated or the chuck would crush it.
-
Hi Ken, this is going to be absolutely beautiful. That gloss black scheme is stunning, it must be so difficult and quite frustrating to keep free of fingerprints and blemishes. You'll definitely find a way, you're too great a craftsman not to!
Richie
-
The MG's look great! And the supports on the LG. Roden plastic is a bit soft, and doesn't help much. But it looks like the price of Roden Dr.I's has dropped on Ebay.
-
Oooo , that is looking very fine indeed :)
Terri
-
Impressive work! Bad luck with the small glitches, but good that they are manageable. /Fredrik
-
Thanks, all for stopping by.
Richie - I don't worry too much about the fingerprints if the surface is hard. The prints can be cleaned off later (experience from building black car models).
Gaz, Terri, and Faf - thanks for leaving comments. This build is shaping up now that I'm putting large assemblies together. Right now, the machine guns are giving me fits. I've done some overall weathering, too.
I have the landing gear assembled and the mocked up with the wheels. I flat-spotted the wheels, which are not lined up here in the photo.
(https://i.postimg.cc/yxC2dpfB/Fokker-Dr1-37.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/Fzb8JbqS/Fokker-Dr1-38.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I fitted the engine and cowling temporarily to have a look-see.
(https://i.postimg.cc/6ppgyvh7/Fokker-Dr1-34.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Here, you may be able to spot the panel fasteners I added.

(https://i.postimg.cc/tC58q5FQ/Fokker-Dr1-36.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
I'll fit the machine guns, then work on getting the top wing on before putting on the landing gear.
Thanks for looking!
-
The gear and wheels look great Ken. That being said the cowling and fasteners are superb!
RAGIII
-
Wow! That looks sharp!
-
Really beautiful Ken, quick work too.
-
Love the reflection ...so shiny !
Terri
-
Great work Kensar: The cowling is very convincing as it should be as it is metal. Nice touch with the rivet detail as well. Cockpit looks the business alright with the seatbelts nicely folded. The "True" god of the north is a noteworthy touch and sure to garner some looks. This is shaping up nicely. I am about start one and will be following along as you progress.
-
There's some really nicely observed detail here, Ken
Richard
-
Ken, the landing gear is a beauty in itself! Lovely details 8)
The complete bird will be a show stopper!
Cheers,
Frank
-
loving the black scheme which has turned out looking great, not an easy thing to achieve. The extra detail with the panel fasteners really sets it off nicely, looking forward to seeing the finished build
-
Thank you for the comments, my friends. I appreciate your encouragement.
I've got the guns mounted and I'm working on the top wing now.
Dust just seems to stick to this like a magnet, even with a thin wash weathering layer (which doesn't show up in the pictures).

Do you have a Tamiya anti-static brush? Works great when your model gets that magnetic quality and collects dust like mad. I've had it so bad that I couldn't even wipe the dust with a cloth.

How many beautiful details, hats off before that cowling and landing gear struts.
Really inspiring work.

Another update
Finally got those guns mounted.
(https://i.postimg.cc/25B710sc/Fokker-Dr1-40.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Couple of detail shots. It's got three wings!

(https://i.postimg.cc/Z5QLYGMv/Fokker-Dr1-43.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
The black knight will rise again! (at least on its landing gear)
(https://i.postimg.cc/mDfNCQRb/Fokker-Dr1-44.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Not much left to do.
-
Crikey Ken, this is already near completion and it's looking utterly brilliant. I am amazed by how quickly you are able to work and maintain such an immaculate standard.
Richie
-
Beautiful! Very Tidy work.
-
She looks wonderful with all three wings !
Terri
-
Thanks all!
Richie - It seems like quick building, but its just assembly of major parts that were prepared over a few weeks time.
Thanks, Gaz.
Terri - it really took on the Fokker tripe look with that third wing.
-
Your Dr1 is looking spectacular Ken! You are really close to finishing !
RAGIII

Last update!
The static cling seems to be subsiding for some reason. I'll do a final cleaning before the formal 'prom night' pictures.
Engine mounted. As mentioned earlier, its glued directly to the firewall so the cowling will fit properly.
(https://i.postimg.cc/3RqNwJ0q/Fokker-Dr1-46-small.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/rydCNDjK/Fokker-Dr1-47.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Those turnbuckles were a bugger.
(https://i.postimg.cc/CdTKjPNH/Fokker-Dr1-49.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
Only a few things left - some handles on the fuse, pilot's step, and the prop. The cowling's on at this point. Maybe the cable that holds on the cowling!
Thanks for following along, everyone.
-
What a masterpiece, not much room to play with on those tail feather turnbuckles but they look perfect. Very much looking forward to the final reveal. :)
Richie

The Engine looks great in place and the elevator controls are terrific! I am really looking forward to your completion of this one!!
RAGIII

Very exciting Ken !
Terri

awesome work, the heat effect on the engine looks great, looking at your cockpit surround pics i could almost smell the wood and leather 8)
