Carving is done for the H struts and all are now in place. Just need to add the cross bars to form the H. Then lots of Touch up prior to rigging!

RAGIII,
The closer you come to completing this triple build the more
you make the rest of us want to give the kit a go. Thanks again
for build report.

Nice contrast between strut color ans binding color Rick. The struts themselves are nicely sized and not at all over scale. Very nice.

Those struts are the cats meow Rick , well done indeed . Looking forward on seeing them with their cross bar and the rigging . For the alrons control is this a kit part ? Or do you have to make this as well ?

Those struts look most excellent Rick!  Can you give us a little guidance as to what kind of bamboo skewers you used, and how you whittled them down to SPAD struts?  If I missed this earlier in this thread, my apologies and you can just re-direct me.  Thanks.

Best,

Bob

First thanks to all for the positive comments. They are appreciated greatly! I feel I need to mention that Only the inner H struts were carved. The outer struts are from the kit! One thing I was pleased with was how well the stain mixture I used, Cherry and Golden Oak, matched the tan  acrylic base and oils of the plastic struts. The bindings were CDL rib tapes from one of the WNW kits.

Bob,
I used skewers found in grilling or housewares sections of most grocery and large retail stores. My steps were as follows:
1. Cut a length off slightly longer than the desired strut length.
2. Use a sharp exacto wedged in to split the skewer portion in half( roughly). I was usually able to get two struts from one piece.
3. Turn it over to the round side and again with a sharp exacto blade start carving length wise. It peels off in even layers. I also carved the sides to desired width in the same way.
4. When close to the width desired start the finishing process with a sanding stick on both sides.
5. Round off the edges with the sanding stick.
6. Sand a V shape on each end while getting it to the actual length.
7. Stain and when dry coat with future.

Thanks for the interest! If I had the tools I am convinced that crushed tubing would be better for the rigging process but these will work for My methods  ::)

Thanks Ken! I can't take credit for the idea as some of the Old School WW1 Modelers have been using Bamboo for years for thisw purpose  8) On the other hand it is Ny first time doing this and I am pleased with the results!

I have progressed to the point of rigging on all three SPADS . Just need to add the binding tapes to the Guynemer and Luke SPAD's. So this will be the last post until the rigging is well underway. I don't want to reveal the surprise too soon  8)
