Evening all,

Whilst waiting for the diorama base bits to arrive, I thought I may as well bite the bullet and the paint the figure. Figures aren't my forte and, in my case, I don’t think they match up with the finished model - but as this was a diorama, I didn’t think I could wriggle out of it.

So after a base of my MRP primer I followed it up with a thin over spray of the base colours (hoping I was leaving a little shadowing). These were from Vallejo. I then painted in the shadows by hand trying to blend as much a# possible with the brush and a dip of thinner. Highlights next and that was pretty much it. It didn’t take long and clearly not a ‘pro job’ but for all that, I’m quite pleased with him in the flesh (macro photography is a killer). At any rate, I reckon I could try another 10 times and I don’t think I could do it any better...

So here is ‘Hans’, hard at work on the fuel pump...

The base coat:

...And with his friend ‘Willy’:

It’s the Aviattic figure that complements the fuel cart. He comes with 3 heads, I didn’t like one, but painted the remaining 2 to see which one I preferred- and Hans won... ::)

Thanks Guy

Ps what kind of plaster should I use for the base? Any old one from a DIY store? Or a modellers one? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Somehow in my modelling fug I have missed this. What a super idea and brilliantly executed. This is going to be a very interesting dio when complete - I will keep a better eye in future!

I am interested in the spoked wheels because I will need one for my current project. I am considering scratch building one but those 3D printed examples from Gaspatch look very good and tempting....

Thanks chaps,

Still waiting on my Diorama extras to arrive, but I’ve bought a black 40x30cm picture frame for the basis of the scene.

I’ve crated up one of the Junker’s wings for a little more interest...

I used a walnut veneer sheet for the planks, a dot of white glue, followed by a drop of dark grey applied with a toothpick for the nails. A little dust here and there with pigments to finish.

Thanks

Guy

The crate is a brilliant idea Guy, the sort of addition that supports your overall theme. I believe that the composition will develop in successive steps as you add to your scene, as I indicated earlier. This is now starting to come together quite nicely!

Thanks, but Manni suggested it first!

Really nice progress and some very well executes shadowing on the figures! I am keen in seeing that diorama finished. I also love the nails on the crate. Truely exquisite!

Thanks  ;)

I guess I can’t complain at a semi-final  ::)

Minor update.. the package came today from Dio-Dump. Very nice and has exceeded my expectations. Incredibly detailed moulding. Will just have to see if I can do a paint job that does it justice!

I’m not quite sure how to go about it yet. I was thinking of painting it the colour of the mortar and then hand paint the bricks assorted colours?

Any tips?

If you google 'paint scale brickwall' you will find various ways you can go, but starting with the mortar and painting the bricks is a basic way to go.

I used to do little vignettes in 1/72 scale sometimes before I went with aeroplanes only and had some great results with soft pencils in red/orange and earth tones to 'paint'the bricks in a sort of dry-brush technique.
But there are many ways to go, most inportant is to very the colour of the bricks slightly and randomly to avoid a toy like look.

good luck!!

Evening,

I got a little distracted by another model that I started - but I’m back on track!

As I’m a diorama newbie this is taking a lot longer than it probably should...

I’ve started painting the walls (not finished) and thought I’d have a layout practice:

The base is a picture frame with the hardboard back epoxied in. I’ve got a bag of modellers plaster to make a concrete floor. I don’t know whether to pour this in directly onto the hardboard (the frame creates a rim) with the frame itself masked off, then score the slabs, paint and weather in situ? Any reason why that’s a bad idea? I’m leaving a sliver (marked by the pencil line) for dry earth so will put in a wood strip to mark the boundary of the slabs.

Any thoughts about that or in general? Obviously everything is just loosely placed at the mo.

Many thanks,

Guy
