Title: Junkers D.1 + Aviattic Trailer + Diorama
Post by: Gisbod on June 24, 2018, 08:06:37 PM
Junkers D.1

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of posting lately, but I have been looking in on everyone’s lovely work.

I had, perhaps, over dosed on Wingnuts, but having completed a couple of other builds, I was drawn back to the lovely new Junkers...

It has morphed from what was to be a quick build into, with the detached wings option, the idea of having it mounted onto the back of a trailer. From there the idea of a modest diorama spawned. It will be written up (hopefully) for ‘Scale Aviation Modeller’.

Remembering the lovely RFC trailer release from Aviattic, I contacted Richard and have acquired the said trailer along with a box of Aviattic ‘odds and ends’ to contribute towards the litter of a captured German airfield at the end of the war. There’s a couple of fuselages, fuel cart, propellers, engine parts to add to the mix. I still don’t have a defined vision of the finished article yet, but will have a play with what I’ve got when it arrives and see where it takes me...

This is pretty ambitious for me! Usually, the minute I finish a kit, it gets relegated to a box in the garage never to be seen again. But I think having the trailer as a separate kit should push me along with some enthusiasm.

Figures may be an option, depends if they’re painted well enough. I think figure painting is a different skill set to modelling and I don’t want to spoil the effect if they’re not up to scratch! But I’ll give it a go regardless.

So my basic plan at the moment is to have a backdrop of aircraft parts, perhaps a hangar wall if I can source/ make one and the Junkers dissected and piled onto the trailer. Both wings will be off, the tail cut off and be, generally, stripped back. I think I may do the Junkers in an aluminium, bare metal finish, maybe not even with markings.

So that’s the mission!

To help me I’ve got a couple of sets of engine aftermarket from Taurus - D3218 Bosch spark plugs and D3209 Valves, lifters and timing gear.

And from the ever amazing products from Gaspatch - a set of the new to market Palmer spoked wheels (there’s a photo of one in a hangar with spoked wheels and bare rims... I may try and replicate this). I’m hoping I can incorporate these despite being rather English! And the jaw droppingly excellent set of resin Spandau MGs 08/15s. I haven’t decided yet if they are to be mounted on the aircraft or alongside on the trailer.

Many thanks to Richard from Aviattic who’s helping me and given me a great deal of inspiration already!

I just hope I can do it justice.

I have, however, made a start and, it goes without saying nowadays, the kit is beyond beautifully moulded and presented. The one thing you do notice is the lower parts count to a ‘normal’ Wingnuts model. I think this kit is aimed at getting non WW1 modellers to take a dip into Wingnut’s World without the fear of rigging and a top wing to glue on with struts poking everywhere! In fact you can make it without any wings at all!

I’ve made the engine and replaced the said parts with Taurus, added some ignition wiring and a few extra copper pipes from photographs of a Mercedes D.IIIa. The parts were sprayed with MRP fine black primer (new to me and sprays beautifully!) and after a quick burst of red (which was then masked) to represent the rings - decal option here if you’d rather, painted with a mix of Alclad metallic paints, ending up with a brown, oily filter to blend it all together. The cowlings will be off so all of this will be on display.

The cockpit is a Gem! Very cleverly represented framework which all clicks together. I would, however, exercise caution here as the engine bearers arrangement takes a bit to of positioning to get right. A few dry runs here is time well spent! I opted to use the kit seat belts which scrub up nicely under a lick of Vallejo ‘Hemp’ and a quick wash into the detail to bring out the stitching. I also used the kit decals for the instruments followed up by my usual method of a blob of clear epoxy over the dials to ‘glaze’ them. Wingnuts provide the photo etch handles on the instrument panel, and these give a very satisfying 3D look to the office.

I’d be very grateful and interested in any feedback/ suggestions for the overall build/ plan! I’m most certainly not a diorama specialist, in fact I’ve never really done one! So I may need some help & pointers in that direction.

Many thanks for looking in.

Guy

I'm blown away by how good that looks to date. I've no idea how you do what you do - but it looks totally amazing.

Sorry - please don't put it on a trailer - this thing has to fly!  ::)

Guy,
What superb detail work, and so incredibly clean! This is a very impressive start to what promises to be an absolutely stunning Build, and I'll be following closely.
I've only done one Diorama, a very simple display of an HB.12 on a base in a maintenance setting and had no idea where I was going with it until I started developing a scene and just kept adding to it as it developed. I think your hangar wall idea will provide the "seed" you need and you will start to populate and build into the scene from there. I found that an assortment of tools and components incorporated into the scene added a lot of atmosphere to the setting, and there's plenty of after market sources for such items. Your Aviattic trailer and the various additions such as removed Spandaus and wire spoked wheels will all enforce the overall theme or "message" of the display.
Good luck, an inspired project that I'll enjoy following as you bring it all together!
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks chaps!

Lance... yep, I’m just concerned with it looking like a pile of unconnected bits!

I want some definite composition- that tells a story perhaps?

Guy

Ps any ready made hangar walls/ wooden perhaps? Maybe a window or two?

Hi Guy,

Nice work there....you can maybe source some wndows and odds and ends from the miniart series of building kits?

For hanger walls probably not too difficult to scratch build as per the Michael Scarborough school of modelling.

FWIW why not do the diorama of the machine in the hanger with the tyreless spoked wheels and the wings propped up behind as shown in the instruction booklet?

Was toying with the same idea myself.

Enjoy the build.

Dave

Thanks again  :)

Dave, yep, the mini art is a good idea! I’ll have a look there.

I just like the idea of it packed onto the trailer.

Another question I meant to ask was about the tie down straps you see in the period photos? Not rope - but straps. Any thoughts on what I could use there?

Post by: Gisbod on June 26, 2018, 03:47:49 AM

Evening/ morning etc,

So onto the fuselage. As per usual, the Wingnut kits have such a perfect fit that there is absolutely no tolerance of paint, or anything else for that matter, on the mating surfaces... And yes, I had a slight gap on the lower fuselage join. Totally self induced. Designed by robots, built by ham fisted Modeller! There are just a lot of points of contact with the framework and the inner fuselage, and I would take more care to make sure everything was lined up and in place and suitably sanded of any offending imperfections if I was doing it again. No harm done though, I can’t really see it with a sliver of putty and under a coat of paint.

Painting wise, it couldn’t be easier, a base layer of the already tested MRP fine black primer then an overall coat of Alclad Aluminium. Followed up by some shading here and there with some differing shades. I’m going for a fairly dilapidated look.

I think I will leave off any decalling as I rather think the factory look will enhance the diorama scene envisaged.

What do you reckon?

Guy

Ps I can’t believe how quickly this has come together - what with a simple paint scheme, no decals, no rigging... it’s a breeze of a build!

Pps I might make the wing roots a bit more complex? They look a bit ‘simple’ up against the fuselage join?

Thanks Frank, Nigel, Rick & Ed,

A parcel arrived from Richard at Aviattic yesterday...

He’s very kindly had a clear out of his bottom drawer and supplied me with some lovely background ‘litter’ for the Diorama.

I’m still waiting the arrival of my Trailer, Fuel Cart and Gaspatch bits.

Any ideas for the canvas straps for the trailer tie downs?  ???

Afternoon All,

Pleased to say my lovely Aviattic goody bag arrived this morning  :)

The trailer looks beautiful. Incredible detail but a little flash to remove...

The fuel tank is equally beautifully cast with some very detailed small parts... shown here after the parts have been cleaned up.

And if that wasn’t enough... the Gaspatch parcel arrived too. These parts are breathtakingly perfect. Nano modelling. How these are made is beyond me.

Ps here are the trailer parts cleaned up:

Clean up is done with a mix of scalpel blades, fine files and a drill. Care is needed as it does produce a lot of dust and it’s apparently a bit of a health hazard, so I opened up the windows and wore a face mask.

Thanks Gazza  ;D

And yes Manni, that describes it perfectly! Ingredients all there, just wondering if the chef’s up to the job!

So I’ve constructed the trailer and fuel cart. They went together very well and I didn’t have any issues. I’m not used to working with resin, but it stuck together very well using a medium viscosity CA. There are an excellent set of photographic instructions on Aviattic’s website which takes you through the build process very nicely. I think the whole thing probably took a couple of hours. My only error was, I think, that I didn’t (ie forgot) anneal the PE fenders, so the arch has ended up a bit ‘flat’. I didn’t really realise until I stepped back at the end and it was too late.. and it bugs me now!

I primed them using my lovely MRP fine black primer and painting next up.

I’m getting close now to the basework and I haven’t a clue where to start...  ???

Painting done!

I’ve painted the trailer in a pale green hue (as per Aviattic’s recommendation). I’ve used the black base for shadowing, then a paler mix for highlights. I picked out the raised detail with a paler again mix using a toothpick. Then a pin wash in the recesses followed by some dusting here and there with dry pigments.

The fuel cart is primarily painted with Alclad metallics - a base of aluminium with some magnesium and dark aluminium lowlights, the pipework is brass and the metal wheel rims and the rim of the tank are Humbrol polishing metallics - I love these - brush paint on then wait 5 mins, then polish (gently!) with my Dremel drill and a polishing pad. It’s like metal magic! The image doesn’t capture the look, but it looks just like metal in the flesh.

So, here’s where I’m at at the moment...

I’ve had some great tips from Manni re dioramas but I’m still at a stumbling block of how to proceed from here. If I use all my little it’s going to look too much of a jumble, so I think I’ve got to be very selective of what goes into it.

I really want it to be inside a hangar; a dirt flat floor with two hangar walls on a corner. I can’t find anything commercially that would fit for the walls and look like the inside of a WW1 hangar? Any ideas would be most welcome...

Cheers

All is looking Really Terrific! Love the trailer and fuel cart! As for hangar wall material if you are looking for plastic I will say that Plastruct makes a myriad of styrene sheet that is deeply grooved to represent wood planks. and could be painted to look like wood in the usual manner. Also look into G Gauge train stuff. Some of the materials are done in 1/32nd scale as the gauge varies widely in scale. If you are looking for real wood I am sure it is out there in Model RR accessories, just can't remember who makes it.
IHTH,

And thanks for the advice Rick, it’s just that I’m such a newbie at dioramas - I really don’t know where to start.

I’ve seen a commercially made Factory wall and gates set that could work, not really what I had in mind, but I’m running low on ideas and it would at least get me started!

Thanks again Manni,

I have looked at these, but I think I’m going to go for the factory metal gates & wall from Diodump... they’ve got some excellent products!

Guy,

Take a look at this site for some ideas and inspiration:  http://www.boxdioramas.com/.  A hangar setting would be perfect for a box diorama.

Thanks Bill & Frank  ;D (nothing compared to yr lovely Bristol Fighter work Frank...)

Nice Bill, that’s what I wanted, but I couldn’t think how to achieve it. Bit more diorama practice required  ???

As I’ve said, I have now got an order in for a factory wall and gates, some paving and will see where that takes me.

Looking wonderful - I’ve been eyeing off this factory gate as well for some time for another long running project. I’m struggling to cut and paste links on my broken iPad  but you should check out the amazing diorama from our own forum member -Michael s - search ‘after the armistice - the trophy hunters’ (I think) - should get you there.

Evening all,

Whilst waiting for the diorama base bits to arrive, I thought I may as well bite the bullet and the paint the figure. Figures aren't my forte and, in my case, I don’t think they match up with the finished model - but as this was a diorama, I didn’t think I could wriggle out of it.

So after a base of my MRP primer I followed it up with a thin over spray of the base colours (hoping I was leaving a little shadowing). These were from Vallejo. I then painted in the shadows by hand trying to blend as much a# possible with the brush and a dip of thinner. Highlights next and that was pretty much it. It didn’t take long and clearly not a ‘pro job’ but for all that, I’m quite pleased with him in the flesh (macro photography is a killer). At any rate, I reckon I could try another 10 times and I don’t think I could do it any better...

So here is ‘Hans’, hard at work on the fuel pump...

The base coat:

...And with his friend ‘Willy’:

It’s the Aviattic figure that complements the fuel cart. He comes with 3 heads, I didn’t like one, but painted the remaining 2 to see which one I preferred- and Hans won... ::)

Thanks Guy

Ps what kind of plaster should I use for the base? Any old one from a DIY store? Or a modellers one? Any recommendations?

Thanks

Somehow in my modelling fug I have missed this. What a super idea and brilliantly executed. This is going to be a very interesting dio when complete - I will keep a better eye in future!

I am interested in the spoked wheels because I will need one for my current project. I am considering scratch building one but those 3D printed examples from Gaspatch look very good and tempting....

Thanks chaps,

Still waiting on my Diorama extras to arrive, but I’ve bought a black 40x30cm picture frame for the basis of the scene.

I’ve crated up one of the Junker’s wings for a little more interest...

I used a walnut veneer sheet for the planks, a dot of white glue, followed by a drop of dark grey applied with a toothpick for the nails. A little dust here and there with pigments to finish.

Thanks

The crate is a brilliant idea Guy, the sort of addition that supports your overall theme. I believe that the composition will develop in successive steps as you add to your scene, as I indicated earlier. This is now starting to come together quite nicely!

I guess I can’t complain at a semi-final  ::)

Minor update.. the package came today from Dio-Dump. Very nice and has exceeded my expectations. Incredibly detailed moulding. Will just have to see if I can do a paint job that does it justice!

I’m not quite sure how to go about it yet. I was thinking of painting it the colour of the mortar and then hand paint the bricks assorted colours?

Any tips?

If you google 'paint scale brickwall' you will find various ways you can go, but starting with the mortar and painting the bricks is a basic way to go.

I used to do little vignettes in 1/72 scale sometimes before I went with aeroplanes only and had some great results with soft pencils in red/orange and earth tones to 'paint'the bricks in a sort of dry-brush technique.
But there are many ways to go, most inportant is to very the colour of the bricks slightly and randomly to avoid a toy like look.

good luck!!

Evening,

I got a little distracted by another model that I started - but I’m back on track!

As I’m a diorama newbie this is taking a lot longer than it probably should...

I’ve started painting the walls (not finished) and thought I’d have a layout practice:

(https://s6.postimg.cc/ahq59hiy9/60_BBFCD7-_FCEF-429_B-9_BE4-00547584_D246.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/ucc6vly5p/)

The base is a picture frame with the hardboard back epoxied in. I’ve got a bag of modellers plaster to make a concrete floor. I don’t know whether to pour this in directly onto the hardboard (the frame creates a rim) with the frame itself masked off, then score the slabs, paint and weather in situ? Any reason why that’s a bad idea? I’m leaving a sliver (marked by the pencil line) for dry earth so will put in a wood strip to mark the boundary of the slabs.

Any thoughts about that or in general? Obviously everything is just loosely placed at the mo.

Many thanks,

Guy

I really like the general layout of your diorama. Everything's placed off-balance and no line goes parallel to the frame of the dio (I remember that as the most important lessions I learned from Sheperd Paine's books). Is there a special reason why the wall on the left side is broken down? Is the scene close to the front?
Best regards
Andreas

Thanks Rick!

On a technical note.. I’m just worried that if I cast the plaster in the frame - it could crack. The hardboard base has a degree of flexibility about it and the plaster would only be a few mm’s thick? Having not worked with it before I don’t know how strong it is?

Thanks

Guy

The hardboard back will probabely soak the water off the plaster. It could crack, but it could also deform and then your still flat surface becomes something dome shaped. I personally wouldn't cast in plaster, but use something like this air-drying putty:
To create the desired surface I am using texture rolling pins like these here:
http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/22-textured-rolling-pins
I think that's a great website, located in Spain (no connection, just a happy customer), where I always find something handy.

Still procrastinating on the base...

But I have made progress on the resin wall!

Base coat of a mortar colour (Tamiya Deck Tan)
Bricks painted individually  :P using 5 Vallejo shades of brown
Shading & some weathering powders to blend it together
A little Moss Green sprayed around the base
Metalwork painted a mottled rust brown
Hairsprayed
Vallejo top coat
Scrubbing
Streaking

I might enhance the streaking a little, but basically it’s done.

Thanks Rick & Gazza,

So, after much thought. I’ve gone mad and used the plaster using the frame as the cast. However I did line it first with tin foil to prevent the moisture wicking into the base. I cut the foil away from the edges once dry. So far so good!

(https://s6.postimg.cc/p7bwggo5t/DB22_F0_CA-3_F4_F-4338-_BB09-_A4_DE75671107.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/igvf710zx/)

Then I scribed the slabs using a steel rule and an awl (pointed steel tool) followed by some cracking here and there with a scalpel. It was fairly dry at this point but not fully cured.

(https://s6.postimg.cc/uiqt16hy9/10_B4_EB2_A-_E2_D6-4_BE3-9488-0414_CC4994_C3.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/e7qp4v5gd/)

And a close up:

(https://s6.postimg.cc/p7bwgh3ld/158_BB805-5_D78-4_BDB-_A522-_C8_A4_D575_C4_E7.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/j6e7jegz1/)

The plaster dries with a lovely textured effect rather like concrete...

The plan from here is to paint and weather the slabs before any further work.

My only worry is if it cracks, but as I don’t have the experience it’ll be a process of trial and error!

Thanks again,

Guy

Guy, great work continued with the last updates!

Do you know, that on top of your gate are the words "Eisen Werke AG"? This seems to be a company name and the translation is something like ironworks, AG is "Aktiengesellschaft" means public company, stock corporation.
I hope, that they handled not only iron, but also aluminium ;)

Hi Frank,

Yep, I thought it was something like that, but using a little artistic licence as it’s a requisitioned factory near the front?

To be honest, I was struggling to find something appropriate for the structure and in the end it was a bit of a compromise.

So, a little more done...

I painted some pre shading to kick off:

(https://s6.postimg.cc/easyb4d29/48_FF1_AC1-3_FE2-46_A4-86_BE-_DBE333_B3_FC6_C.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/pae5mq3h9/)

Followed by a mottled Tamiya Sky Grey. I then wicked in an enamel wash of dark brown to the cracks:

(https://s6.postimg.cc/pae5mqiwx/FF782568-_CCA0-4068-9_B9_B-0_BEEC2_EE9_BAF.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/wdm12cocd/)

And whilst on a roll, made a start on the earth area using AK Interactive ‘Dry Ground’. I haven’t used these products before and it’s very easy to pour on and push into shape. With this in mind, and with the hot weather we’ve been having I’ve been collecting some dry soil and sand samples here and there whilst walking the dog... these were sprinkled over the still wet paste and into the grooves of the slabs. A few grassy tufts were added sourced off eBay (excellent little things with a sticky base):

(https://s6.postimg.cc/3nz55pcmp/521519_D7-5_DFB-4_C91-_AA8_E-_DE6_ED1_B73_EBE.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/wqdf8iywd/)

I’m going to let this set overnight then I’ll give the whole thing a coat of matt varnish to (hopefully) seal in any loose areas.

Been away for a while due to a minor op so catching up here. This is all looking really good, for someone that doesn't do figures I think you did pretty well! Figures in a diorama don't necessarily need to be "show" quality, they have to help tell the story and that figure looks pretty good.

Just one consideration for you - what is the story here? It now looks like a disassembled D.I in a factory rather than something on a captured airfield. How does the viewer know they are looking at a captured installation? It does seem a bit odd to have German ground crew apparently going about normal duties. The only thing that tells you it is a "captured" diorama is the RFC trailer and most people looking at this wouldn't know that.  So if you are sticking to the "captured" theme, maybe you could consider adding a couple of British figures, maybe representing a guard and even possibly an RFC officer/sergeant "overseeing" the German guy.
Title: Re: Junkers D.1 + Aviattic Trailer + Diorama
Post by: Gisbod on August 08, 2018, 04:29:11 AM
Thanks Manni,

That’s a fair point, but I’ve done the dusty bits on it now so maybe  tricky, but I will see what I can do.

Thanks Nigel, hope you’re recovering ok?

Yep, my theme has been fairly vague so far. Although I said it was a captured airfield, I think now it’s not. I probably should have had a more defined ‘story’ but I’m now claiming it’s a German factory near the front, but behind the lines to be a sort of maintenance base, (the RFC trailer is captured instead) so ‘Hans’ is safe! I’ve just ordered a workbench to add to the theme. I think when it’s finished it will tie together now. I was originally trying to cram too much in as I had all those nice extras from Aviattic, but I couldn’t get it to look right - I think less could be more in this diorama...

Anyway, I’ve nearly finished the base, with just placement and extras to consider.

Thanks

Guy

That story makes more sense, I am glad that Hans is safe  ;)

The base is looking very good, my only comment would be to dirty the concrete up a bit, especially around the base of the wall (to make it look more part of the base) and also around the gates, as there would be more wear and dirt where vehicles go in and out.

Thanks for the kind words on my recovery, I am making progress and am able able to sit at the workbench for short periods, so hope to get on with some modelling.
