A test on this subject.
ply sanded to paper thickness, soaked in water for a while, nailed to the "more or less" position.
If it works out, all pin holes and ragged edges will be gone.

Not perfect, but looking at contemporary pictures of the real thing, it is quite close me think..!! ( with buckling effect and all )
