Eduard 1/72 (!) Spad XIII
« on: November 13, 2016, 04:34:14 AM »
Hello all,

Having seen SteveB's amazing Albatros build, I've been tempted over to the dark side - 1/72 (also perhaps due to a lack of new Wingnuts).

As I'm not too keen on kits that require any effort to get to look good - the Eduard Profipack Spad seemed the obvious choice. Luckily, my local model shop (yes, I actually have one 5 mins away  :D ) happened to have one on the shelf, and for less than a tenner, found myself poring over the contents this afternoon  ;)

First thoughts are, flipping heck, its teeny! Struts are like a length of stretched sprue... but equally, very impressed with the package. Lovely refined detail, very fine photo etch, super clearly printed decal sheet and even a masking sheet for the microscopic windshields and wheels.

It's beautiful, but equally scary as the size will pose some real challenges for my eyes and fat fingers  :P

Think I'm going for this colour option...

Nonetheless, couldn't resist making a start...

Thanks for looking, and will be after lots of top tips from the 1/72 team...

Guy

Hi Guy,

nice model, but you have to put some extra tlc. I have build it like 3 years ago and what I remeber most vividly is that I used some sprue pieces to force the fuselage halves open wider in order to fit to the upper part. Maybe it won't be the case this time,b ut just as a warning - do some test fitting :) Otherwise it builds beautifully and the colour markings are damn nice :)
best regards,
Sasho

That looks like a great kit. I haven't built it so can't help with gotchas but will gladly help out on any other issues.

Though small it is a very nice looking kit, in your very capable hands I'm sure it will turn into a real gem, really nice looking PE set, looking forward to seeing what you do with this kit.

Guy,
You are truly a modelling mad man, your previous post was related to a 1/4 Scale Se5a, then without missing a beat you are into a 1/72 Scale Spad! Can't keep a good man down they say! You are certainly a braver man then I, I'll be following this latest adventure of yours with great interest.
Cheers,
Lance

Lovely little kit. Looking forward to seeing this built
I have about 40 1/72 kits in my stash but am slowly moving away from them as I move up to larger scales. You might change my mind with this one though

That is a great start Guy! As we mature, the size of those components in 1/72 seem to get very, very small! But it looks like you're OK with it! I do like the colour scheme... Regards, Marc

Glad to read that you have seen the light at last. Despite the small pieces that looks to be a very good kit. Just think about it as a super-detailing exercise on a larger scale kit - but you will end with a completed model instead!

Stephen.

PS. willing to help with any tips if I can.

Many thanks for the interest - I hope it ends up being completed... it's one of those where I'm wondering how on earth I'm going to finish it how I imagine...

A little start pre oils. I have to say, the cockpit is remarkably detailed for the scale. Nothing I feel needs adding.

But I would like to pick the 1/72nders brains...

What are the favoured method of rigging? I'm thinking possibly of stretched sprue for the cross centre struts and possibly Uschi elastic for the rest. Although I have to say I'm not a huge fan of that. I'd much prefer monofilament but not sure how I can incorporate it? I'm also thinking of a hole all the way through the lower wing to pull the monofilament through to tighten? What about turnbuckles?!

Any tips welcome...

Thanks

Guy

Guy, I have a PowerPoint presentation on my favourite methods of rigging, for 1/72 scale and also for 1/32 scale. If you send me your email address I will gladly share it with you (and anyone interested).
