1/32 Academy First World War Centenary Nieuport 17
« on: July 24, 2016, 03:44:31 AM »
I've been away too long as my modelling mojo seemed to come and go like a will o the wisp in a gale but I'm starting this build next week.
I've got some after market parts from Mastercaster and this will be my first venture into this scale.

I am looking forward to your build Toby! Which scheme have you chosen?

Toby,
Looking forward to following this one; I've seen "mixed" reviews on the Mastercaster Set and I'll be very interested in your assessment of it. I have the Hobby Craft labeled version of this Kit and keep delaying it's start pending finding some A/Market goodies for it. I'll be following your progress with great interest.
Cheers,
Lance

I think I'll be cherry-picking  bits from the Mastercaster parts tbh.

I'm pretty much in the same boat, Lance.

Good luck with the build Toby.

Best wishes
Nigel

 Toby,
Excellent choice of projects my friend. The MasterCaster set isn't too bad actually. But certainly no shake and bake item either. I thinned the interior side pieces as much as I was comfortable with and thinned the forward fuselage quite a bit. A lot of extra work yes but came out well in the end. You may already be aware that the forward fuselage is too wide straight from the box. Just hold the fuselage halves together with the cowl in place and you'll see what I mean. I sanded down just the forward sections to fit the cowling. This the correction mentioned in Windsock way back when Hoobycraft first released the Nieuport. I also used the MC cowl a long with a Vecter LeRhone engine. If you go that route be prepared to thin the cowl down to almost paper thin. I nearly forgot you'll need to fabricate the exhaust channel behind the Le Rhone.

I'm looking forward to following along on your Nieuport project .
Highest Regards,
Gregory Jouette

Let's hope that this will help to restore your enthusiasm: a little success with a build can often be a wonderful stimulus. Keep us posted as this will be interesting to follow.

Stephen.

Thanks Adam. That will prove invaluable although the first picture threw me somewhat.  ;)

I found the relevant Datafile for Nieuport fighters and will be using that for reference.

I've also ordered some paint from Misterkit and guns from Gaspatch. Just started to wash the parts prior to priming so should get under way tomorrow. For some reason I don't have the instructions for the Mastercaster parts but I'm not sure how much I'm going to use of them anyway. Certainly the seat but looking Adam's and Andonio's links it might be a  selective hotchpotch of parts.

One thing I've noticed is that there are decals and PE for an instrument panel yet nowhere on the instructions is it shown where it goes  and on both Adam and Andonio's build links they have no IP at all. Did the 17 have an IP as such?
