Rigging tensioner ?
« on: June 13, 2016, 05:39:12 AM »
Hi guys, Further to my questions regarding tensioning mono-filament rigging I thought you might be interested to see this.

I saw this on E-bay for the princely sum of £14.99 with 'free' postage. It comes with five differing sized bits and has, given the price, a reasonably well made look about it. Allegedly variable from 150 to 500 degrees how it performs for the intended task remains to be seen but it's a lot less unwieldy than the last iron used. Besides it should allow for some finer soldering too.

Hope that's of interest to someone

Regards - Tug

That is an excellent price you paid Tug, mine cost me around the $80.

Exactly the sort of soldering station i use for that purpose (apart from the island-specific power connection, of course. As if driving on the wrong side wouldn't be enough of a difference from the continent  8)). Has served me well for years.

Tug, can you give some more details, brand, model number.  Would like to look that up and maybe purchase, too.

Hi Guys - seems you all think the same as I did - good value for the outlay  ;)

Mack - this is the link to the page - there are others but I thought this was the best deal for the price. BTW the slightly cheaper version (same model) does not come with the spare tips

Hi,

£14.99 is really great, but £19.99 postage and packaging to Belgium is crazy!

I don't know...
I burn rigging by only using extinguished matches... I'm sure I'll end up with melting a wing by using a solder... :o

Edo - if you check this you'll see that's how I began.
http://forum.ww1aircraftmodels.com/index.php?topic=7338.0

Third paragraph under first pic you'll see I did try this using the larger 'Cooks' matches. What I found was that it works pretty quick but only very localised for as soon as the heat dissipates the effect is lost. Using the iron gave a consistent heat along the length of rigging which really tightened quite a slack line but I agree it is an operation where one has to use extreme care.
