Albatros C III FA(A) 211, April 3 1916, Verdun Front
« on: February 16, 2016, 06:22:26 AM »
Hello,
at last I send som pics of my recent build: The Albatros C III in 1/48 from Special Hobby. Sorry, I've got no pics of the box or the sprues, just take a look here:
http://www.hyperscale.com/2010/reviews/kits/sh48090reviewrb_1.htm
It's a fine kit but there are some minor issues. Looking at pictures of the finished kit made by others and comparing the parts to the drawings in the WDF, it's evident that the cockpit opening is much too small and the wheels are too fat. That turns this workhorse into looking like a Brauereigaul (sorry, no way to translate this... :) )
I widened the cockpit and replaced the wheels with those from an Eduard Pfalz D IIIa kit, that have the proper diameter. I thinned down all edges to increase scale effect and scratchbuilt some parts like the seat belts and the Telefunken FT in the otherwise quite well done interior. And I replaced the kit's engine with a resin one from Pavla.

For the wood I used Uschi van der Rosten's wood decals and gave them a preshading and a filter of brown oil paint. For the CDL wings I wanted to try something else and used Aviattic's CDL decal paper. It takes its time to use it over some preshading (especially cutting the rib tapes – I HATE decaling rib tapes..), but I like the effect for a well worn battleplane flying in the battle of Verdun for an artillery spotting detachment.
No photo exists (as far as I know) from C.1110, this interpretation is based completely on written reports. I'll finish this story as soon as I finished the kit...
I hoipe you like it.

You are doing a superb job with this build Borsos, the Uschi wood decals look excellent as does your tail and wing shading.

Stunning work Borsos! I like the way the cross is "just" barely showing through from the upper surface!

She's absolutely gorgeous, Borsos!  You wood grain and CDL are truly superb.  I built this one a few years back and in addition to the issues you pointed out, I found that the rear bulkhead was too far back, placing the observer's seat under the rear decking, so I moved it forward.  Otherwise, I liked the kit and wouldn't mind building another.  I look forward to your next update.
Cheers,
Bud

Hi Bud,
that was my problem too. I replaced all bulkheads, which were much too thick in my opinion, with scratch build ones. This, dealing with fitting problem caused by thinning down the Walls and replacing the engine and the challenges that rose because I wanted to leave space between the actual and the fake cockpit floor to insert some brass rod for Stabilizing the lower wings made me realize that issue only after I had glued the fuselage halves together. I should have moved forward the rear bulkhead too. But I rebuilt the observers seat anyway and enlarged it. And with the Spandau installed I hope that this problem is not too prominent. So most fitting problems were caused by myself, the kit fits pretty well.
Kind regards
Andreas

Beautifully done Borsos. Your "worn effect" is very impressive as is the wood effect on the fuselage, you are doing some very nice work here! :o

Thank you all!
I do not have the eduard kit, but this might be of some help:
http://hyperscale.com/features/2002/albatrosciiirw_1.htm
http://www.kangaspuut.net/saksalaiset/albciii2.jpg
The wings of the eduard kit seem to be a little banana-shaped (at least on both of these builts). Of course this is manageable with some hot water. And some pics of the parts show quite an amount of flash, the special hobby parts had no flash at all. I do have the eduard Hannover, which is more or less the same early generation of eduard kits, and when I compare this kit with the SH kit, then the Special Hobby kit is much better.
This aeroscale review shows the parts of the SH kit quite well:

She's looking spectacular Borsos, the colours for the CDL are extremely well done as is the shading.
