Lance - great start!
The openings behind the hand holds were closed off with a kind of 'cup" inside - if you see what I mean - not open through to the interior. probably for aero-dynamic considerations and to stop airflow from entering the fuselage. Hope that makes sense...
Richard

Another revelation! Thanks Richard, I need more/better references. Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations?
....and thanks Martin, it's a fun Build but as you can see a lot of information is missing in my progress!
Cheers,
Lance

The Jack Herris monograph on SSW aircraft is definitely recommended...

lots of useful drawings and photos and info

http://www.amazon.com/Siemens-Schuckert-Aircraft-WWI-Centennial-Perspective/dp/193588123X

nice photo on page 113 which illustrates what Richard is talking about, and puts the panel line question to bed ;)

in that photo you can see that the exposed longhorn is flush with the fuselage side, or very nearly so

Just playing catch-up Lance.  Great choice with the D.III.
I look forward to watching the usual magic of your builds.
Onward and upward, my friend!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Only just found this thread Lance - been at an exhibition over the weekend. That's a good start on what promises to be a great project. Good luck with what lays ahead, I shall certainly follow your progress with interest.

Always been attracted to, and wanted to make, this particular aircraft since in my 72nd days when it was unavailable in any scale. With a growing WnW stash however I'm a mite reluctant to add another but who knows there might be one at an 'impossible to pass by' price at Telford  ;)

Tug

Hi Lance,

this is a kit that I want to build one day so I'm keeping my eye on your wonderfull and informative build. I'm sure that this is going to be a handbook for many new SSDIII builds!

Best regards,
Sasho

Bo, thanks for the info, I wish I had got this book before, I have the Herris Roland and Pfalz versions and they are excellent. The longerons would look flush as I would imagine the fuselage skin was no thicker then the Albatros ones, very light gauge. The clearer photos are wonderful, the oil staining on Udets "LO!" really looks clearer. I'll be incorporating the "cups" into the construction plans.
Cheers,
Lance

Thanks for looking in, Ernie, Tug, and Sasho. I recommend the Kit, it's good to do a little extra work on a Kit that is basically a good one. It's got it's short comings but will provide a solid base for a nice model.
Cheers,
Lance

Looking good there! I will echo others that it is not a bad kit - took me forever to build it (think I had build logs on three forums over three years or so) but it looks great when finished and it is worth the modifications/improvements you are making!

Hi Lance

Glad to see another D.III. I must confess that I haven't found the courage up to this day yet. But perhaps I may contribute a little bit too:

Concerning the panel lines here some additional information to the underside. They should look about this way.

As you may know, the cockpit arrangement presents another challenge for the modeler (And it's my favourite subject... ::)). Roden's cockpit represents to some extent the D.III prototype cockpit. The production aircrafts had a slighly different arrangement, for example a "Fokker style" control stick, magneto and altimeter on different positions,...)

I am looking forward to your next update!

All the best,
Peter

Petrov 27, Thanks for your supportive comments!

Peter, Thank you for taking the time to comment and especially for this information. The panel lines are great stuff to have, the three views I have don`t show them and the kit detail is even less, I`ll be adding them. As for the cockpit that explains to me why there was a difference between the Kit Layout and my (limited) photos, very helpful!

Cheers,
Lance

The Brengun Photo Etch Set arrived from Hannants yesterday, it looks like a great addition, nice detail and the soft brass PE that I far prefer to the heavier silver metal type. The two highlights IMHO, are the lower engine "chin" cowling with the louvres and the seat back, should be a great improvement in both areas.

The set also has the parts for the early versions full cowling.....

This, along with priming and some scribing of the wings and lower fuselage portion of the lower wing assembly will keep me busy for the next week or more.
Cheers,
Lance

My word, Lance! Looks like a fine set of brass you have there.
Good luck with the application of said brasswork  ;)

I'm not a lover of PE but your set certainly looks impressive, looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it when you start fitting each piece.
