Excellent work Rick, the fuselage bands and crosses look superb, well done, and the tail lozenge is looking really good.

Rick, I think you have got the crosses spot-on.  Your tail lozenge looks
absolutely perfect.  The Pfalz is looking more and more itself and an
absolute gem, my friend!

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks Guys but the comments are as always over generous  ;D This one is going to be a 6 footer! I am posting a link to a Pfalz photo found on the Net. If copyrighted I will be happy to remove the Link from my post.

http://www.wingnutwings.com/ww/v9E3C7E03/www/products/model_kitsets/32006/archive_photos/Pfalz%20D.IIIa%204237~17%20-%20Jasta%2024%2010%20January%201918%20(AL0766-003).jpg

PS: I just noticed that the link is for WNW photos but I found it on another site/ location?

As can be seen the Aircraft is VERY dirty. My question is what is all of this grime. Certainly some oil and fuel up near the engine but it is filthy all the way back. So opinions on how best to achieve this look using oils! Burnt umber and black? Burnt sienna, black, and burnt umber? All thoughts are welcome!

Well, one step forward and two back! There were glitches in the cross application that didn't show up in the photos and I actually realized I applied them just slightly too low. So... I used masking tape to lift the right cross with no problem. Then I actually had to sand the left cross off. I have just finished re- spraying the silbergrau in the affected area and will re-do the ribbon later today. I just couldn't bring myself to continue to accept work below even my standards  ::) I did apply the light blue tail overpaint and it is OK. I can now do what I should have and wait until I can order the Pheon decals and use the Iron cross that I really wanted in the first place. Once I re-do the ribbon I will set the Pfalz aside for a while and bring the Salmson back on line! In the mean time my question in the above post reference the weathering still stands!

I would experiment with the oils as you suggested, and possibly some pigments near the bottom after the oils are dry. Since the overall weathering in the photo you've linked to seems to be in a vertical direction as opposed to horizontal in the direction of airflow, as well as being dirtier on the bottom, this suggests that it has been left outside in the damp elements. Dirt and mud has accumulated and either light rains or dew has slightly washed the dust and dirt in off in the direction of gravity, sort of like with armor. There also seems to be a subtle mottling and light splattering which is also more apparent towards the bottom.

Just my observations, I could be completely wrong...

Thanks George I pretty much agree with your observations so I will try to do as you suggested. I do have a 1/48th Pfalz all painted that I can try things out on  8)

A pity to see the cross removed Rick it was looking so good, but if you could see what we couldn't I can understand why you did it.

Thanks Des. I had some paint lift that I thought I had taken care of that really showed up under the left cross. I looked at it until I realized I just couldn't accept the rough appearance. All better now.

As great as the Pfalz looks, I'm looking forward to a little update on the Salmson...  :P :-)
