Phonix Type "A" Flying Boat (1/72nd Joystick)
« on: September 22, 2014, 12:30:59 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I just can't get this vac bug licked.  I started another build of the Austro-Hungarian persuasion.  This time, a cool flying boat which I know nothing about.  This will be fun.

I just cut it out and everything is sanded.  Ready to start the interior etc.

It has an interesting engine mount/wing area so wish me luck  ::)

Cheers,

Dan

Great choice Dan!  I would love to do one of Banfield's flying boats in 1/32 some day.  I'm still holding out for a Lohner from WNW. ;D  Your Type A should be very interesting.  I am confident that it will emerge beautifully under your skilled touch.

Cheers,

Bob

I've never built a vac kit so I will be following your build closely Dan, the subject you have chosen is very interesting.

Very interesting subject. I am looking forward for the next updates.

All,

A bit more done here.  I am having a lot of difficulty finding much info about this plane other than some profiles.  I can't even decide if it was a two seater or single...any ideas from you chaps and chapettes?  :-[

So...I pulled a Luft '46 and made things up based on pictures of other float planes I've seen.  I added a compass on the floor, a simple instrument panel, seat and belts and some controls and side ribbing.  Here it is so far...

It is fun and suitably busy, but not accurate.  Any ideas would certainly be entertained  ;D

Thanks for looking,

Dan

The nice thing about ww1 planes is the "furniture" wasn't standardized at all like we think of today. So it is going to be hard to argue with your educated guesses methinks.

Cool project! Looking forward to more.

Great start on another awesome project, Dan.  I agree with Bo.  Don't sweat the small stuff.  No, wait.  That's not Bo's philosophy at all.  Let me rethink that and get back to you later.
Cheers,
Bud

Thanks, Steve, Bud, Bo and RAG...sounds like an old Rock an' Roll band...

I'm glad to hear there is at least one vote for single seater.  I kind of like my cockpit as is (so far).  ;)

Thanks for the encouragement.  I think I'll paint this up, close up shop and then start kit-bashing a Roden engine.

More soon,
Dan

Thanks, Everybody...this is a fun build.  I love flying boats!  :D

I painted the interior, put the fuselage sides together and also added the lower step (which was molded separately) and it is looking good so far.  These shots show it after some sanding and filler and a coat of primer.  Still a ways to go, but I wanted folks to see it before it was finished.  ::)

I'll fix all the dings and then start the engine and engine mount as well as make fittings for the lower wing.  Should be just fine!

Thanks for looking...
