Hello Everyone,
I just can't get this vac bug licked. I started another build of the Austro-Hungarian persuasion. This time, a cool flying boat which I know nothing about. This will be fun.
I just cut it out and everything is sanded. Ready to start the interior etc.
It has an interesting engine mount/wing area so wish me luck ::)
Cheers,
Dan

Looking forward to your build! I am sure you will do your usual stellar work!

Great choice Dan! I would love to do one of Banfield's flying boats in 1/32 some day. I'm still holding out for a Lohner from WNW. ;D Your Type A should be very interesting. I am confident that it will emerge beautifully under your skilled touch.
Cheers,
Bob

I've never built a vac kit so I will be following your build closely Dan, the subject you have chosen is very interesting.

Very interesting subject. I am looking forward for the next updates.

All,
A bit more done here. I am having a lot of difficulty finding much info about this plane other than some profiles. I can't even decide if it was a two seater or single...any ideas from you chaps and chapettes? :-[
So...I pulled a Luft '46 and made things up based on pictures of other float planes I've seen. I added a compass on the floor, a simple instrument panel, seat and belts and some controls and side ribbing. Here it is so far...

It is fun and suitably busy, but not accurate. Any ideas would certainly be entertained ;D
Thanks for looking,
Dan

The nice thing about ww1 planes is the "furniture" wasn't standardized at all like we think of today. So it is going to be hard to argue with your educated guesses methinks.
Cool project! Looking forward to more.
-
Great start on another awesome project, Dan. I agree with Bo. Don't sweat the small stuff. No, wait. That's not Bo's philosophy at all. Let me rethink that and get back to you later.
Cheers,
Bud

Looking good and definitely a single seater.
Regards, Steve

Looks great so far! I am amazed by the speed and detail of your work on these kits.
RAGIII

Thanks, Steve, Bud, Bo and RAG...sounds like an old Rock an' Roll band...
I'm glad to hear there is at least one vote for single seater. I kind of like my cockpit as is (so far). ;)
Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll paint this up, close up shop and then start kit-bashing a Roden engine.
More soon,
Dan

Hi Dan ,
Off to another excellent start on vac :)

Thanks, Everybody...this is a fun build. I love flying boats! :D
I painted the interior, put the fuselage sides together and also added the lower step (which was molded separately) and it is looking good so far. These shots show it after some sanding and filler and a coat of primer. Still a ways to go, but I wanted folks to see it before it was finished. ::)

I'll fix all the dings and then start the engine and engine mount as well as make fittings for the lower wing. Should be just fine!
Thanks for looking...

You are making great progress Dan, it is really starting to shape up nicely.

Outstanding work Dan! I love seeing this one come together. :D The fuselage/hull looks great!
Cheers,
Bob

Dan,
I am still amazed at how quickly you can make these difficult projects look beautiful!
RAGIII
-
This fuselage looks like some beast from the seas :D However it looks great how you build it so far. No doubt for the final result.
-
All,
There is a point where these guys just start falling together and I started to hit that spot. The bottom wing went on with some brass and drilling and the tails were next. I still need to do some spot filling but this elegant beast is really coming along.
I want to start the top wing mount and the engine area soon. Really an enjoyable and satisfying build so far.
Thanks for looking...Dan

Great progress

All,
I got a bit more done on this little guy. I started making a new Hiero 230hp engine that started out as cylinders and the top half of the crank case from a Roden Benz engine. Since the mags are in the center and not on the end, they were placed there and the cylinders split so the mags would fit. I then made a new bottom half of the crank case to look more like my references. I have also started detailing some exhaust and radiator parts and there is more to go...but it's a start.
I then started the trapeze engine mount and got this far. The engine is just perched there...it's crooked etc. since it's not glued in but you get the idea. Looks pretty cool, I reckon.

Moving right along. Thanks for looking. :D :D

That is looking really cool Dan, I love the look of the early flying boats and their high mounted engines, this is turning into a very nice looking model.

Amazing work on a really interesting project, Dan. She is really
starting to look the business now. :D
Cheers,
Ernie :)

This build hits my soft spot - WW1 flying boats... Lovely progress so far.
I am sorry, I cannot help you with the references, if it was a Lohner it would be a different story.
Anyway, I would follow what Bo wrote - your educated guess is as right as any other option.
-
All,
Still more done tonight. I put some stub exhausts on and added some spark plug wires...a necessity since the engine is out there in the breeze. They are not perfect, but will look ok in person.
I also cemented the engine onto the mount as it lets me detail the engine without my fingers destroying it! Looking pretty nice and straight.
I also added some more radiator tubing as well as elevators and elevator horns. I still have some detailing on the engine to go, but it's close. I'll start rigging the engine mount tomorrow! :P
Thanks for looking...Dan
-
damn nice dan, really enjoying the build

Outstanding work Dan! Lovely engine. The whole thing is coming together well!
RAGIII

She is really starting to come together Dan , looking forward on the next up-date :)
Terri

Thanks Terri, Rick and Scott... :D
I really want to get it moving this weekend and do some red/white painting to brighten things up!
Stay tuned....Dan

Exceptional work on the engine, Dan, especially considering it's size.
Cheers,
Bud

She's looking great Dan, looking forward to more!

Hello Crazy Vacform Lovers,
I got the engine painted, the Austrian fields painted and the decals on. They were touch and go as a test decal broke into a million, billion pieces. I then sprayed the ones I wanted to use with Future and cut them out very closely. They were super thin but went on ok. Even the nose/hull cross even though it will need a bit of touch up. I also needed to spray the white field for the nose cross too. I only lack a good Austrian crown decal for the rudder. I'll be on the lookout for that...
I'll do some rib tape shading tomorrow and hopefully attach the upper wing!
Thanks for looking....Dan
-
You certainly are powering ahead with this one Dan, the decals look great as does the Austrian colour fields, she is a very smart looking bird indeed, looking forward to seeing the top wing mounted.
Des.

Ah, the 'million, billion piece' broken decal, Dan! I've been there too, but you've got things sorted out beautifully and things are shaping up into a fine model.
Best wishes
Nigel
-
Sorry to hear of your decal issues. It seems you got past the problem with no difficulty. Looks beautiful!
RAGIII
-
Thanks, Guys...
The decals were just really delicate once they had future on them. A couple ripped but at least didn't explode! ;)
Lovely little machine that I just can't ruin at this point!
Thanks and cheers,
Dan

This is really nice, Dan, you are really doing some fine work on Her. I've never built a Vac Kit but the more I see of results like yours the more I'm drawn to doing one. I'm really enjoying following your progress.
Cheers,
Lance

Beautiful modeling Dan! She really looks sharp. The A-H colors and markings really make this an interesting model, and your superb craftsmanship is turning her into a real beauty. ;D. Very well done!
Cheers,
Bob

Hello Everyone,
With the help of my son, I think I improved a bit on the paper 3-view jig a bit using Legos. And the wing is on, straight and true. It's really strong too with all those triangular arrangements. What a cool plane... 8) 8)

Rigging should be easy with some EZ-Line. It's REALLY close now! I'll paint up the struts and start rigging soon.
I also did some rib tape highlighting by taping off and spraying with some Tamyia "Smoke". At least it breaks up the grey expanse of the wings and stab. ::)
Thanks for looking,
Dan

It looks fantastic with the top wing mounted Dan, this is a really neat looking aeroplane, looking forward to seeing the rigging fitted.

Outstanding build!

Beautiful!
I have a set of the Pegasus A-H decals, the smallest sizes for the rudder emblems are 7mm and 8mm top to bottom, not including the little spike on top of the crown. Let me know if they will be ok, I'll send you a pair.....
Ian

Thanks, everyone! And Ian...I think I found some but thanks so much for the help! :D :D :) :) ;) ;)

A wonderfull bird. No one would think that this is a vacu.

All,
She's done! Check her out on the completed folder... :) :)
Thanks for all the encouragement along the way.
Here's a peek! ;)
