Looking really great - do you just use a thinned black for the preshade?

Also - Aviattic Cowling? Didnt know they did one for the N28?

Petrov 27,
The pre-shade is a mix of 3 parts Model Master Aircraft Interior Black to 1 part Light Gull Grey Enamels. The Aviattic Cowling was a free trial from Richard to try out (from a Kit they are working on) I don't feel I'm giving away any secrets as Richard mentioned it on this Blog back on the first or second page. It fits beautifully. :)
Cheers,
Lance

Hello Lance:

Great update.  Looking forward to seeing you progress on this one.  I almost forgot about this one.  Glad to see it back on the bench and you making progress.  One of my favorites.  I may have to pop for the Aviattic Cowling.  A vast improvement over the kit one.  Well maybe not vast but an improvement none the less.  I think this is one of Roden's best kits.

Best

Thanks all, for looking in and for the positive feedback. It's been slow, hopefully I can stimulate a little faster progress here as I 'm really "itching" to get started on the D.VII Group Build Project. :)
Cheers,
Lance

I somehow missed your update on the engine Lance. Sorry about that, but I've reset the notify feature again so hopefully that'll do the trick. Your engine looks like the real deal. I'm going to have to track down some Alclad as you're achieving stellar results with it.

Nice work with the pre-shading too. You're exercising much better control with your airbrush than I do in that regard. What do you set your air pressure at for this task?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers,

Chris

I use the standard 18-20 psi Chris, with the colour at nearly zero. As for the Alclad, magnificent product but a little hard on the bank account! Ensure you get and use one of their primers; I seem to use the "Grey Primer and Microfiller" the most.

Great progress, Lance.  The woodwork is great.  The use of the tabs to help
with lining up the fuselage is a super idea.  The Nieuport is coming along
beautifully.  Well done, my friend.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Hey, Lance!

Now that I'm back on the Forum I can get caught up a bit with other builds. This looks first rate, and I can only offer best wishes for another successful build as you progress. IMHO, the Aviattic seat and the cockpit side panelling really make a difference!  ;D
Cheers!

Another brief update, some scrap PE from the spares pile was added to the 4 locations for the double rigging points on the fuselage before painting.

I mixed some of the colours, several were used as is as they matched the colour illustrations I had nicely. All were Tamiya Acrylics, a first for this old enamel fan. The bottom CDL portions were airbrushed with Tamiya Deck Tan XF55 which I noted a lot of you were using for CDL. I like the effect but may add some yellow in future. The Pre-shading shows through nicely.

The engine cowling got a couple of coats of white at the same time as the turtle decking received the Flight Commanders white top decking. The dust particles on the cowlings' 3 O'clock position were thankfully just laying on the surface, not in the paint, and wiped right off!

After approximately 48 hours of drying time their followed a delicate masking job. The White chevron and undersides had to be completely protected for the application of the 5 colour camouflage on the upper and side surfaces. The acrylics were all thinned with laquer thinner for airbrush application. I elected to spray rather then hand brush to preserve the Pre-Shading. Colours were (all Tamiya):
Brown - XF64 Red Brown
Beige - XF59 Desert Yellow (this appears very "orange" in the photos but is a nice beige tone in real life.)
Green - XF26 Deep green
Light Green - 50/50 mix of XF67 NATO Green and XF3 Flat Yellow
Black - XF69 NATO Black
The foregoing had to be done in sequence from one side, masking with Post It Notes applied with no "relief" gave reasonably sharp demarcations between colours.

Next comes a coat of Future, some decaling, and a bit more work on the cockpit module before it gets slid into place. I also need to get some turnbuckle eyelets installed once the last over coat is applied; the holes have been pre drilled already.

Cheers,
Lance
