Max Immelman's Fokker EIV - 1:32
« on: July 04, 2014, 04:49:02 AM »
Hello guys,

this is the second project I'm working simultaniously - the WnW's Fokker EIV.
The idea of the build came from a photo of Max Immelman standing next to Prince Boris III (later Tzar) and I willtry to add 2 figures representing them.

The build is OoB with the exception of HGW seatbelts and gaspatch turnbuckles. Little to no detailing will be done as I really want to build something fast, with no hastle and for the fun of it. I was thinking of getting the Taurus models engine, but decided that it requires more from the build that I'm ready to put into it at the moment. Probably my next Eindecker will have the better engine and additional detailing and more aftermarket but the not this one, the aim here is pure recreational building with no intention the end result to be displayed at model shows.
While keeping in mind the things I said above, this is in no way a build that will be screwed! I will do my best to achieve an OK result, I just won't put 8 months into the build, but more like 2 and a half!
Special thanks to Des, Bertl, Bo Monroe and all of YOU guys and gals (hopefully) for the great tips and tricks that you sharing in your build logs!
So then Bertl started working on his Fokker and I decided that showing my work, while he shows his masterwork is just.... well ... a bit embarasing. At the end thou I decided to open the build log here - embarassing or not :-P So don't expect wonders, but be ready to show me the flaws and to give advice and constructive criticism!

Already most of the work is done, engine, metal cowling, wings and body, most of the undercarriage is also done. I plan to have the undercarriage glued by the end of this week and start rigging the next one. At the end I paln to carve the propeller from wood. If this doesn't work, then I'm going to paint the one supplied with the kit.
The hardest thing so far was the engine and specifically gluing the halves without the tiny edge where the halves meet, and I totally failed there! This issue alone is enough to get the Taurus engine, gluing the halves perfectl without a trace of the joint is very hard and for my level of skill totally impossible.
The rest of the kit is the usual WnW quality and easy of assembly.
Now the WiP pictures:

Excellent work Ssasho0, looks superb.

What method did you use to paint the metal swirls?

Have to agree with my amigo, Sasho.  I couldn't have said it better.  Looking forward to the next update.

SsashoO,
"little to no detailing, want to build something fast, Nice try! It's magnificent already, very impressive and I'd hate to see the results if you really went at this! Great start, and I'll be following this Build closely!! :)

I agree with Lance, SsashoO reckons this one's a quick build.

Hmmm, this is aspirational modelling for me.  Keep going ShashoO and please spill all your secrets on the polished metal finish.

Well, I suppose it's all relative. Whether a fast build  pretty much out of the box or not, this seems a wonderful piece of work to me Ssasho0, and I can only admire your skills. Thank you for sharing this build with us.

Best wishes
Nigel

Thank you guys for hte nice words!

Regarding the metal finish at the begining at wanted to try few different approaches to this "Swirl" issue and on the metal cowlings, inside the fuselage I tried the following 2 things":
1) Painted with Alclad II chrome then a relatively thick layer of Mr Colour Stainless. After a day I put a toothpick (the end was rounded first) in my dremel and tried to peel only the first layer of stainless and show the chrome bellow, this way achieving as real effect as possible. It was a total failure as the toothpick is too hard and goes right thru all layers to the plastic too easy. Probably this can be done and I will try it again on another project, but I will put a layer of varnish over the chrome, use something with rubber end instead of toothpick and final but not least important, I will have to get a flexible shaft extension as, while the dremel is small and not heavy tool, this particular task requires very light touches that are hard to execute.
2) Painted stainless and then made the swirls with a silver pen - this looked relatively OK, but I decided that it is a no as the swirls were too thick, too regular and the silver particals too big and visible.

So after rendering both those techniques useless (at least for now) I went with the usual way of handbruhing the swirls as on the "tips" page at the WnW site. I needed 5 attmepts till I found the best combo of paints and brush and got the swirls to look more or less OK! In the end I used Mr Surfacer 1500 black, then polished it and applied Alclad II stainless steel. Buffed this one slightly with cotton bud and made the swirls with Mr Colour Chrome SIlver. Lessons learned are:
- Use a good quality brush, I attempted this in the begining with some very small but not so good brushes and failed miserably. Then I got my best brush (W&N #7 with Kolinsky hairs)and while the brush is a little big bigger then the previous ones, the swirls were way finer and way more controlled!
- Always take the paint from the cap and not from the bottle itself. Reshake the bottle every few minutes as the thinner evaporates and the paints get too thick
- clean the brush every several swirls with thinner (Mr. leveling thinner in my case) as the paint is getting thick on it and the quality of the swirls is going down.
After that it was just Alclad Aqua gloss for protection

Hopefully this explains everything but if you have question I will gladly answer them!

Best regards,
Sasho

Excellent Sassho0, thanks for the tips on the polished metal finish.  :)

I also like the mottled effect on your wings.

I so admire your work, Sassho0!  The Eindecker is looking superb and I
am looking forward to the next updates.  Thank you for your excellent
explanation of the swirling technique.  That is very helpful and makes it
seem less daunting.

Cheers,
Ernie :)

Thanks for the explanation Ssasho0, especially the details of what didn't work!

At least with this model the interior surfaces provide an experimental area that doesn't ruin the overall finish of the model.
