I made the top wing by glueing two sheets of 1.0mm styrene sheet together after the wing shape was cut out, while the glue was still wet I formed the wing shape over a length of aluminium tube. This was left taped to the tube for about half an hour. I left the wing overnight for the glue to fully cure before I added the ribs, these were cut from styrene strips. The rear ribs are of a larger size , this is where the wing warping took place. The top wing is over 41cm in length so it dwarfs the bottom wing. The photos show the top wing with only one coat of spray putty, many coats will be added then the wing will be sanded to give the hollows between the ribs.

i thought the toothpicks looked really beefy compared to my toothpicks. the toothpicks commonly found in the u.s. are not bamboo, they are of a light, fragile wood. they are more like 1mm diameter. we have bamboo skewers used to spear sandwiches together at a deli. i think your product is more akin to what i call bamboo skewers. makes more sense. they look great and if they are bamboo i'm sure quite strong.

Okay, that makes more sense. I'd never seen such a beefy toothpick, but I've seen plenty of bamboo skewers that would fit the bill. Toothpick...skewer, knickers...gotch, it's all the same!

So Des, how did you go about flattening the bamboo to get a consistent result? Between two boards in a vice?

Hi Scott - the toothpicks we use are as depicted in the photo below, they come in a pack of around 100 and are made from bamboo, very tight grain and very strong.



Hi Lindsay - To flatten the two sides of the toothpick I just used a No.11 scalpel blade (fixed to a handle), it is a very simple matter of scrapping the blade along the length of the toothpick, the material comes off quite easily, do both sides evenly and keep measuring until 1.0mm is reached. Once finsided I sanded the sharp edges to give a rounded look. Go here for a full description on how I made the struts.

Top wing is just about finished, still needs a coat of satin clear, there will be no decals on the top wing. The top wing is just sitting on the struts for photo purposes. Thought I would toss in a few photos with some figures just for fun. Shown here are Steven Robson's immaculate spoked wheels and Doug Craner's brilliant laminated wood propeller.

Hello Des - very new member here. Just to say that seeing your fantastic work on the Caudron & the Taube just blows me away! Having just returned to modelling after a 15 year gap (mainly due to the output of Wingnut Wings) to aspire to do anything approaching your beautiful work is rather daunting to say the least! But I will persevere and can only say I wish this website was around in the 70s,80s & 90s.
