Rib Tapes:

I attempted to use the rib tapes from an Edward Fokker D-VII.  The color is not a good match and they are quite shiny. Also they are not long enough to wrap all the way around the lower surface. I then tried cutting rib tapes from a sheet of Aviattic clear doped linen decal. I like the result but will need to exercise extreme caution when cutting to keep the width symmetrical. Also, I am unable to cut them as thin as the Edward strips so they will look a little bold.

.

.

Neither of the aircraft ( (C. 13199, or Cl.3a 7005) had CDL rib tapes but at this point I’ll just have to live with it.

Airfix provides very basic landing gear for the Hannover. I decided to scratch build my own using brass rod and Contrail plastic airfoil. I measured the brass against the Datafile plans and the location holes on the kit fuselage.

.

Added the stock airfoil I sanded the leading edge flat for better attachment to the brass.

.
Then I applied PPP to the attachment joints and sanded after it dried.

.

The Airfix wheels are correct diameter and well shaped. Only point is to remove the large discs from the rear surface and add the valve patch cover.
.

These are ready for paint and lozenge decal.

.

Next I turned my attention to the gun ring.

.

I added the raised portion where the gun mount is located. This was sculpted with Milliput.

Nice progress! Your patience on the rib tape process must be maxed (It would out max me)

Another great update Tim, the scratched landing gear is going to be fantastic and surely far superior to the old kit parts. I love the attention to details, I wager not many would modify the wheels and add a valve patch.
You're tempting me into buying the reissue of the old Airfix Brisfit v Dr1 dogfight double. It looks like you have huge fun making these into up to date models.

H Tim,
You said that you cut rib tapes from 'Aviattic' clear lozenge.
Whenever I've applied clear decals over existing decal, it results in the clear decal showing dark as it blends with the decal underneath.
Your photographs look as though you've used 'Aviattic' white backed decal, not clear backed, as the resultant rib tapes are bright.

Thanks Mike.  You are correct about the clear decal showing up very dark. I posted that effect earlier.  The lozenge rib tapes in my last post are Edward white backed decal and the CDL ribs I cut from Aviattic white backing sheet. I would like to try Aviattic lozenge but only have the 4 color white backing decal sheet.
For this build I’ll continue to use the Aviattic CDL because frankly, I want to finish and move on to other projects.  I like the Quinta decals but am put off due to the rib tape limitations. Unless they start printing on white film, I’ll probably switch to Aviattic.

Thanks again,
Tim

Decals and on their legs:

After several very busy weeks at work, I managed to get a little more work done on my two Hannover machines.
Here is the Cl.-II:

Decals are cobbled together from the scratch bin. The numeral 2 is Archer dry transfer on clear decal film.

The fuselage cross is a little oversized but the best I had to offer.

I’ll work on getting rid of the silvering next week.

Cl.-IIIa:
Decals are from the Print Scale Hannover sheet.  They are very thin but have good integrity.  The white is a little translucent but not as much as the Peddinghaus decals I’ve used in the past.

I have been unable to get consistent rib tapes from the Aviattic sheet. Aviattic would probably be fine in larger scales but cannot be cut thin enough in 1/72.  I was lucky enough to have a sheet of Ameical Gryphon alternative rib tapes to work with. I’ll finish them this weekend then contemplate the upper wing attachment.

Excellent progress Tim, they are both looking wonderful. Can you detail how you get rid of decal silvering when you get to that stage? I have a feeling I'm going to need to know this skill in the near future.

Hi Tim,
This is great modeling on such small scale kits.

Both models are really looking good: the Airfix classic is being given some superb treatment here.
