Amazing scratch built details Tim. Don't worry about how things look under magnification, it's the view to Mk I eyeballs that counts. That tiny scratch built engine is wonderful. Seriously impressive skills!

I would not worry too much about imperfections in the interior detail as nobody will be able to see them when the fuselage is closed. On the other hand the engine will be seen and there is some seriously good scratch building there - first class and in the True Scale.

I love seeing your progress Tim, it demystifies your work in an amazing way that's hard to explain.

What Zac said just above!  ::)

I love that engine! I cheated on mine and used a Choroszy one, same for the RE8 and Roland. I also got a few RAF1 engines for BE2s but they arrived with all the cylinders broken off!

Looking forward to more progress.

Exterior and Wing Details:
After closing the fuselage halves and constructing the engines, I moved on to the wings and fuselage details. The CL.II had longer wings than the CL. IIIa.
Here’s how the Airfix wings measure up on the Datafile plans:
The leading edge of the upper wing is supposed to be straight. The lower wing has a 10 degree rear slant

I figured the best way to lengthen the wings would be to cut them at the attachment point of the solid center section. Then add Evergreen strips to each end.

I cut two lengths and glued them together

The entire center section is wooden, not fabric as the kit depicts.
The lower wing needs to be lengthened as well. I wanted to keep it in one piece so I will add card to the tips

I measured from the third rib from the tip and traced around it. Then moved the wing back 3/32 inch and traced it again

Cut out the pieces and be sure to add camber before attaching.

The CL-IIIa wings measure up well with the datafile plans.

The fuselage is very much too thin. I can’t fix this so will have to live with it.

Bottom of the CL-II :
I cut out the camera opening, added engine access hatches and puttied the wing attachment

I added an Aeroclub Spandau and made the exhaust from Strutz brass stock

Lastly I added the other engine access hatches and ammunition magazine for the Spandau

I’ll need to add engine louvres before priming for paint.
Thanks for looking in!
Tim

I've never found the Hannover types terribly interesting but I'm very much enjoying your progress, Tim. It's fascinating to see the little additions and changes made to the base kit.

Lovely corrections Tim. It's so good to see  old fashioned hand made skills put to use.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you add the engine louvres. I will be making notes. :)

Richie,
I plan on using Archer 3-D printed louvres.  The smallest ones are still too long so I’ll try to cut them with scissors. Hopefully they will not fracture.

Thanks,
Tim

Great work Tim!  I sure wish we could still get stuff from Archer.  :(

Oh man!  I had no idea Archer stopped all sales. That’s a big loss for our hobby.

When the chemicals for dry transfers became either too expensive or unavailable he adjusted his game plan but finally decided to pack it in. I agree - a real loss to the hobby. There are are few cottage industries I wish were still around - Archer, Strutz, MV lenses to name a few.

Steve,
There's the dry transfer thing, but overall he, like a lot of others here of late, are facing old age, etc. and just decided to pack it in. :( It is a loss for us, and I hope some others pick up the slack.

Apologies for the thread drift on your wonderful build Tim.
