Hannover Cl.II & IIIa. Airfix 1/72
« on: February 24, 2023, 01:09:30 PM »
My next builds will be these two Airfix kits. I will build one as an early Cl.II with the iron Cruz markings and the other as a Cl.IIIa with late style Balkencreuz. What great timing to follow Mike Norris’s build for reference!

I found two kits in my box.

Here’s my reference material.

I have this excellent PrintScale decal sheet with many options

I will try to make this Cl.II

And this Cl.IIIa

The fuselage painted lozenge will be a challenge. I’m going to try and use this old Fowler 1/48 lozenge decals and then overspray them with Prussian blue paint. I think 1/32 lozenge would be more to scale but I don’t have any so this will have to do.

Starting with the interior, I’ll need to remove these attachments:

I’ll dig into this more over the weekend.
Thanks for looking in!

Tim

Looking forward to this one Tim.
Like most of us I've got one in the stash somewhere which I looked at briefly a couple of weeks ago. Personally I really like to see these old classics scrubbed up and polished enough to sit alongside newer offerings  8)

The parts look rather crude, but I am sure you will work your usual magic on them.

Looking forward to see the end result.

Two kits in one box? Packing mistake or stash efficiency?

Thanks DaddyO. I agree about seeing these older kits getting some love and TLC!
Thank you Rookie. Yes, parts are definitely crude for today’s standards. But this is one of Airfix’s best 1/72 offerings. It measures up to the datafile plans fairly closely. Two in one box was surely my “stash efficiency “.  Often times when I pick out a box to look at I find all kinds of nice surprises I had forgotten!

I'm really looking forward to this, I built one of these as a kid, and I've always wanted to do another. I've got one in the stash, so I'm definitely taking notes here.

Great idea using the larger lozenge for the painted lozenge on the fuselage!  Do you really think the 1/32nd would be better? I've no idea myself.

Warren

PS: I just now noticed that the CL.II is armed with a captured Lewis!

I’m not entirely sure about the 1/32 being better. The 1/48 is a little smaller than the color profile. If 1/32 is larger, then I’d prefer the smaller option.
I still may end up painting it freehand though.
Thanks

Always loved the header card Roy Cross art on the old baggy kit of this one. Looking forward to your new take on it.

This looks an interesting project, Tim.

These old can still work when someone like yourself gets to work on them - looking forward to seeing this one come together.

Definitely one of Airfix's better WW1 kits. I very annoyingly gave my one away. Looking forward to seeing your build of them Tim.

Thank you all for your interest in this build.

Small update but this took me a few hours to complete. Using the datafile drawings I sketched the interior framework onto the fuselage halves.

Then using #100 and 101 Evergreen strips, overlayed the framework. Next I need to create the flooring and bulkheads/ instrument panel.

Thanks for looking in!
