A crossbar is inserted between the two undercarriage struts.
The kit contains a somewhat oversized and rather soft plastic rod for this purpose, which is too thick at the ends to dip cleanly into its gluing points on the strut.
On the model I therefore cut a 0.7mm brass tube with a 0.5mm inner diameter.
A 0.5mm thin brass rod was inserted into this 0.7mm tube and soldered to the ends of the 0.7mm tube.
The protruding ends of the brass rod were then bent at a suitable angle to align the two undercarriage struts with each other.
A 0.5mm hole was drilled in each of the plastic struts at the original gluing point to attach this self-made crossbar.
The alignment of the undercarriage to each other, including the correct angle to the fuselage, was again done by eye.

Once I was satisfied with the alignment of the undercarriage on the model, the parts were fixed together with superglue.
The undercarriage itself was only attached to the fuselage at its gluing points; this will only be attached there later as a separate component.
The axle is again the kit part, but filed and sanded thinner all round.
Painted with Tamiya XF-76 gray-green.
I used a 0.30 mm thick solder to represent the spring steel cables (suspension of the wheels on the axle).
The suspension was simply omitted by Roden.

These two small pieces will be the base plates for the rear landing gear struts with which they are flanged to the fuselage - Roden only provides a blunt connection of the metal strut to the wooden fuselage - which is wrong in principle.

These are the undercarriage parts (among others) of the CrabtLab Albatros D.II/D.III, which were identical to the D.I parts.
Here you can also see the weight holes on the strut stubs which were unfortunately not present on the model and were therefore subsequently indicated with a 0.3 drill.
The base plates on the rear strut stubs mentioned in the previous picture are also clearly visible.

The underside of the two lower surfaces and also the elevator fin and elevator received some weathering. I used ?Mud? from the Tamiya weathering master set #A for this.
This self-adhesive powder was applied with a normal brush and rubbed into the matt light blue paint surface.
For the most part, however, only where dirt can be thrown up by the rotating wheels - and also on the tail skid.
Splashes of different shades of brown oil paint diluted with turpentine were then applied over the soiling with the pastel powder.
Almost colorless splashes of turpentine and virtually no color were also applied to the entire underside area.
The latter in particular has an interesting effect - depending on the incidence of light, a little more or a little less of it can be seen on the light blue.

That's all for today.

Me too, have I mentioned I think your work is beyond amazing ;)? But I have to say thanks you again for posting such detailed build photos and references that will be very helpful for anyone (like me) with this kit in the stash.

I continue to be Blown Away by your details and modeling skills! The gear mods are perfect and will certainly be stronger than the kit supplied parts. Subtle weathering is also amazing!

Amazing. Terrific weathering and building, I've not seen a model that looks as much like the real thing.
Thanks,
Allan Buttrick

Hi Nigel,
I'm very pleased that you see this build report as support for your own ideas for your Albatros model. Even if it is currently still unbuilt on the shelf.
That's the point of building reports - one helps the other or shows ways of building a model that you didn't know about yourself.
I myself always find new ideas or ways here in the forum and then just try them out on some model.

Thanks a lot Rick.
Yes, the chassis is indeed more stable with this brass than before.
Although it should also be noted that the plastic material from Roden is a bit soft.
At least on the struts and some other thin components, I would often like to have more stable plastic material in the kit.
But well, as long as you can help yourself .... .

Another small but final step for the D.I towards its place in the display case.
The undercarriage components are painted, aged, soiled and ready to be installed on the model.
I had already completely painted and finished the two wheels in summer 2009 - now they are finally being fitted.

The yellow arrow in the last picture points to the eyelet for the undercarriage bracing.
This was made from 0.09mm thin silver-plated copper wire wound around a 0.3mm drill bit.

That's all for now.
