Well...I got the rest of the forward chin done.  One shot is supposed to give you the idea that I basically cemented each piece individually.  I cemented everything along the bottom on the left side before putting in the engine mount to give me a positive indication of where to actually cement that structure.  Then, I slowly put in each of the small skins on the right side.  They were each a little long and needed some trimming and thinning but I think it all turned out pretty well.  It looks better in person as the digital camera is evil and pics up specks of dust and glue!  :'(  This was all butt joints and they worked out very well.  Again, the engineering on this kit is pretty phenomenal.

Finally, I did start making the cylinders as you see in the final picture.  Steady as she goes!

It seems I have missed quite a lot of work on this one! You have overcome at least one major challenge and the Albatros is really taking shape. Beautiful Bird.

Thanks for the comments and viewing, Rick!  This one is fun to build.

Here is the engine in process.  I finished putting on the valve springs and rocker arms.  Still needs a few more details like the spark plugs, plug wires and compression handle...not to mention the exhaust!  But is is looking mighty busy and very much like a Mercedes.

More soon...Dan

Dan,
The details "Boggle the Mind". It looks like your weekend was well spent.

The Mercedes looks really good Dan!  I always find these fiddly little parts difficult for my large fingers.  You have done a lovely job with it.  Carry on!

Best regards,

Bob

Thank you very much, Kevin and Rick!  :D

I worked on finishing the engine by adding the spark plugs and wires and then I started on trying to fit the "metal" cowl parts.  They worked well with lots of sanding and fettling I think, again, because the paper I've used in a bit thick and so going all the way round a former adds up by the end!  For example, the chin piece was not matching up to the top panels until I really, really thinned the panels and also did some thinning/surgery on the fuselage nose.  It all worked out in the end, though.

In one shot, you can see I put arrows where you need to match up the top panels.  Notice the coloring is slightly darker.  The designer is a madman!  They butt up perfectly and all the "metal" parts fit over those darker areas.  Sweet.  The final shots show all panels on.  The lighting makes it look like there is a HUGE step on the left side, but it's not bad in real life.  Still needs a bit of trimming but I'm pleased.  On to the tail next for a change of pace and then the guns/cockpit edging!

Cheers,
Dan

Thank you, Rick.  It's kind of cool to put these together since they sort of assemble like the real thing.  A definite learning experience as Des would have said!

I got the rear fuselage, fin and rudder started.  It will look nice once glued on.  Lots of odd curves on these so lots of preforming of paper to the approximate shape and then add glue and hold.  Neat-oh...

I also got the cockpit edging assembled.  Looks better in real life.

More on the weekend,
Dan

Dan, the fuselage and tail are looking sweet!  Your patience and deliberate approach are paying off in a big way.  Looking forward to more.

Best regards,

Bob

Thank you, Manni and Bob!  By the way, Manni...love your Taube!  Really nice job on that one...

So I got the main parts of the tails on but still need to add the elevators, inspection panels, tail skid and rigging.  All in all, it's going really, really well.  I'm so glad the tail section is on and now it really looks like a graceful yet menacing Albatros!  I love those curves.  What a slick machine it must have been.

More tomorrow,
Dan

Dan, sort of looks like a nicely weather Wingnut Wings Alby!  That fuselage is very sharp.  Well done!  Wish you were doing a video of this one.  I will need all the help I can get!

Best regards,

Bob

Thank you, Rick and Bob.

And Bob...sorry about that.  This would be a good one to do a video on since it does have some little tricks and head scratching.  More than the SPAD but still very, very buildable!  Don't get me wrong.  When you start yours, don't hesitate to give me a shout and I'll help where I can.

I finished the tails and put the skid on as well as control horns and cables.  I think I'll do the machine guns next.  They look...interesting!  I'm going to attempt to perforate the cooling jackets.  We'll see what happens!

Thanks for the offer Dan.  I'm sure I'll take you up on it some day.

The Alby is looking marvelous!  You've done a remarkable job with the declining radius curves of the fuselage, and it really looks like a one-piece deal.  Great work!

Best regards,

Bob
