Which kit would I buy if I wanted to build Ernst Udet's mount? the one with the Red and White stripey wing?

Excellent question Nanks, and excellent quote!  ;)  I'm a Udet fan and a Heinlein fan as well.    8)

I'm looking forward to the answer.  Will you await decals, or try to cobble something together on your own?  I suppose one could find decals or dry transfers for the "LO" on the fuselage and "Du doch nicht!" on the elevator.  I plan to do the Udet D.VII at some point as well.

Regards,

Bob

This is a well debated topic. Short answer Fokker early.......or maybe OAW 20??/18...or DVIIF 4253/18......Anthology vol 2 has a 3 pg article on this subject. Have fun!!

Unfortunately there is much controversy still surrounding the identities of some of Udet's D.VIIs. The best discussion/ dissection I have yet seen is Dave Roberts' excellent article (founded on Ed Ferko's ideas) in the Albatros Fokker D.VII Anthology Volume 2 entitled "The Importance of Being Erni's". In it he discusses the possible scheme(s) of the famous "Du doch nicht!!" D.VII - which I am assuming is the one you're talking about - if so it seems highly likely that it was an early OAW product and it probably had a black nose. In any event, despite its iconic status it was only one of at least four D.VIIs he flew. Udet's later DVIIs were BMW-powered D.VIIFs - the one remaining unreleased part of the WNW D.VII kit jigsaw.

Whilst the waters are not as muddy as "Voss' Cowling" beware of anyone who tells you about Du doch nicht!!'s colours with certainty! A forthcoming decal set from Pheon will feature four OAW D.VIIs from Jasta 4, including two of Erni's - watch for the red glow on the horizon and listen for the rumble of the guns when that is announced........

edited for awful spelling!

Rowan,
I am looking forward to your decals inspite of the conflict they are likely to set off  8) Probably an excuse to add an OAW early to my stash  :)

Outstanding Rowan!  We appreciate it.  :)  We who are about to spend salute you!  ;)

Any chance that some Canadian captive markings might just happen to make their way onto one of your sheets (or would that be giving too much away)?   ::) ::)

Bob

I have mine as well. Very heavy & impressive box, unfortunately it will have to be warped up.
On a side note some of the parts look extremely delicate, what is the preferred method of removing say the cockpit sides. Hot knife or saw?

My Fokkers have landed! Rather critically in this scale, the cowlings are very nicely done with the bulk of the vents perforated (oddly some are not).  ???
I know somew of the louvres are removed on some options, maybe the non perforated are those?  It's the only logical reason I can think of.

Waiting desperately for mine..... Keith

Yes I agree, or perhaps optional panels with both options (remember the SE5a with otional fuselage sides) but I think production cost is the driving factor. More optional parts would push the price up... and also inflate my bulging spares box...most of which will never get used but is kept just in case. ::)
