Show us your ....engines
« on: November 21, 2019, 11:21:13 AM »
Let's see that masterpiece of an engine (that may subsequently be covered up inside a cowling)!  Show your engine, particularly aftermarket ones so we can get idea of their appearance and detail level.

I'll start with a few...

First up, a Copper State Models Clerget 9B.
As seen in the picture below, the Clerget has springs that help close the exhaust valve, which are rarely modeled.

I put a simple one loop spring on a previous model engine but wanted to improve on that.  I made the tool below for that purpose.

First wrap a 0.008" wire around the front of the tool.

Wrap the wire around the rod twice to form the spring coils.

Slide the rod out from the flat post to free the spring.  Trim the ends.

Drill holes and glue spring onto engine before carpet monster gets it.

Finished 1/32 CSM Clerget.  Still a bit oily from the last run.

Vector 1/32 Gnome Monosaupape 9B 100 hp.  I remade the front of the crankcase in aluminum and added RB Motions bolt and stud parts.

Wingnut Wings 1/32 Gnome Monosaupape 9B 100 hp.

That "spring work" is pure magic Ken, nicely done and a technique I've "book marked for future.

Thanks for sharing the spring jig, Ken.
Lovely engine you got there. When will you be testing her?  ;)

Great idea, Ken - and very nice engines too!
But I suggest to add the scale, to avoid misinterpretations.

Frank

Nice collection of engines, Frank.  And good photography.
I did add the scale to the captions on my pictures - good suggestion.

What type of paint do you use for detailing and washes?

Here's the 160hp Daimler-Mercedes D.III engine for my Wingnut Roland C.II.  1/32 of course.  Upgrades include Taurus spark plugs and timing gear set.  Ignition wiring and additional details added from copper wire.

The engines are painted with Alclad, I use this also sometimes to (not air!)brush small details, otherwise acryl paints. For washes I use oil paints thinned with lighter fuel.

Thanks Frank.

Great looking engines, Guys.
Eric - The Taurus valve drivetrain really sets the engine off.
Manni - The neglected Benz sure looks real!  You've got the weathering figured out.
