It's nice to see someone paying attention to the little details.

It's a curse.

Thought I would do a short SBS on how I paint detail parts, the IP panel will be our guinea pig.

The part has been sprayed the color I was after, in this case Vallejo Golden Brown, followed by Vallejo Gloss Coat. The gloss is important to be able to remove unwanted wash/ detail painting.

Tamiya panel liners are what I use more than anything else to start the process.

Our first step is to set the borders or features on the part. These borders will provide a sharp line to detail paint to. The capillary action lets the wash flow around the structures resulting in a sharp even transition. The process is apply and then clean with brush/ thinners until you get a clean smooth look, although this cruel close up appears rough, at actual size its pretty clean. Some will try and detail paint without washing first, I find this very difficult to obtain a clean result, the dark border of the wash will hide a lot of sins!

And smaller...

Next step will be to detail paint,

Yes, I like the detail to pop off the part!

More soon.

Not sure how I missed this Ryan - it seems that you started when I was away. In any event I have enjoyed reading through your thread - and am very impressed by the way that you have added real depth to the instrument panel. Must keep a note of this.

Stephen.

Thanks  Stephen I had it originally titled under another name.

Appreciate the comments on the panel, it will look even better when complete!

Looking forward to seeing how the panel turns out once the detail painting is finished .

Hey...its Guy, and thanks Terri, much appreciated gents.

The next stage is fleshing out the black instruments with Tamiya brush applied Rubber Black. The Rubber Black is a bit lighter than the wash product and looks a little chalky, but this will even out with the satin top coat. You can still apply the panel liner at this stage to make fine adjustments and further tie the colors together. i have started this on the crank at the lower left hand side.

First the unflattering closeup and then the actual size. Aluminum and brass parts up next. :)

No not rushing it, but yes decals will be used in a couple of steps.

I like to give a black base to the face of the dial to frame out the decal in case they are a little smaller than the spot for them.

Maybe I mentioned before, but I'm sure the membership has noticed the absence of wood grain on my assemblies.

This is on purpose, the wood graining experience I had on my DH9 really wore me out.

I wanted to see what could be done with tone/ color of the wood and use no graining techniques.

I'm fine with it.
