Great stuff from your bench as we came to expect from you, Frank. It’s going to be anither gem!

Fokker D.VII OAW Leusch, Eduard 1/48, Question 14.6.2019 Decals or not?
« Reply #46 on: June 15, 2019, 05:01:29 AM »
Thank you very much, my friends, for your supportive words!

May be you can help me now with a question regarding decal and color, because I'm a bit clueless.

The target is that picture, linked a WNW manual picture:

Source: wingnutwings.com

The cross is visible with a light overpaint, but what about lozenge below?

I experimented with the Tamiya blue on top of the decals: left under side, right top side 4 color lozenge from the kit

If the layer is too thin it looks also not nice. So the order to be used is:
lozenge decal - blue - cross - blue ?

What is your impression? Does it looks ok, or should I paint the blue on grey primer?

Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
Personally I like the thought of leaving some Lozenge see through, especially seeing how translucent the paint is over the cross. That being said from your photos it looks as though your blue has darkened a lot over the lozenge. So like all Modelers I will say the choice is yours  ::) Either way I am sure it will look awesome!

Fokker D.VII OAW Leusch, Eduard 1/48, Update 16.6.2019 Fuselage
« Reply #48 on: June 17, 2019, 02:35:18 AM »
Thank you very much for your recommendations!

Fuselage

As mentioned the fuselage is closed already.
On both sides some PE parts have to be added.

The halfes had a recess below, so there is no need to sand the glue seam line :)
Into this recess a stripe with stitching have to glue in.

White primed, sanded and futured for the decals.

After the recommendation with decals, even if is more work. At first the underside, followed by sides ...

... and then on top.

The tailplane should not be forgotten.

The stitching needs a lot of softener.

The tailplane is mounted and give the decals one night drying time.

Today I painted with heavily thinned Tamiya XF-8 and a bit clearcoat.
The lower lozenge creates some strange mixing colors, but it will not be very visible.

I like the result. At first glance dark blue, but then the cross and the lozenge looks through.
Less paint compared to my first try.

It needs some drying prior painting the nose yellow.

Cheers,
Frank

I couldn't see any lozenge pattern under the cross in the photo, but the way you've done it, it looks much more interesting.

Like usual a very convincing and perfectly executed job.
There’s just one thing I‘d like to remind you: the metal tube fuselages of the D. VIIs were covered in Tarnstoff as a whole from the metal covers of the engine to the rudder. So the same translucent effect would have occured on the small canvas part of the fuselage between the blue border and the metal engine cowling as well. You didn’t use Tarnstoff decals there yet. If the blue paint wouldn’t have covered up all the lozenges, the yellow paint wouldn’t have done it neither I think. It’s hard to see on the photos in the WNW booklet.
Best regards
Andreas

Well Frank you have an amazing skill in controlling the color spray, the effect is very fine in my humble opinion, fantastic results so far!

Oh, what a overwhelming feedback -Thank you my friends! :-*

Yes Andreas, your are right, as always (Are you a woman? My wife says women are always right 8)) but ...
My experiences to paint yellow was very problematic and works only on white primer. So I was afraid, that white versus lozenge on the same part do not work well.
So I cutted the decal on the color border, as you spotted.

But again my saviour The Red Baron jumped in and helped again:
The yellow was very likely a Hansa pigment which due to it’s inherent high transparency was mixed with white (making it opaque) so it’s unlikely the lozenge would show through anything painted yellow.

If I remember right the recommendation to go with lozenge and use clearcoat in the blue paint was also from him, but I can't find the posting ???

I like very much your work.
Thanks you - I really like your Nieuport Avatar picture!

Well Frank you have an amazing skill in controlling the color spray
This was not that hard, due to the bigger size of the to be painted area. The key was a very thin paint and a bit clearcoat, so with the needle very close the effect is controllable by many thin layers.
I think to paint the little spots/areas on some camouflage of WWII Bf109 is much more complicated.

At the moment there is a delay due to illness, but I hope to be through soon ...

Cheers,
Frank

Fokker D.VII OAW Leusch, Eduard 1/48, Update 22.6.2019 Dragon
« Reply #58 on: June 23, 2019, 07:27:32 AM »
Thx Manni, hope you will like this update too!

Dragon

At first I masked again all painted all parts yellow: fuelage nose, struts, ...

Then I continued with decals, here the crosses on the lower wing.

The white fine stencils are completely unreadable on the sheet, only the carrier film is visible. I catched a Profipack OAW as fallback ...
Not necessary! I put never such filigree white words on a model!

Now the dragon, here the side known by picture.

For the other side only the dragon in the same position. WNW has a additional mirrored one.

The dragon seems to be from a logo of a aluminum foundry of Germany, see right corner

Source: wingnutwings.com

Again the dragon as macro: nicely painted and well covering white. The latest Eduard decals are nice, but with highend kits they still deliver Cartograf printed ones.

Cheers,
Frank

I have been catching up Frank - there are so many builds here I cannot keep up with them all! As per usual the standard of your modelling just makes my eyes water....

The blue over the lozenge on the fuselage is wonderful and the dragon markings also look the part. The tiny lettering on the wing tips took my breath away - how do you do it?!

Stephen.
