Fokker D.VII OAW Leusch, Eduard 1/48, Update 25.3.2019 Decals

Decals

Thank you my friends!
I must admit, that the prop is a bit on the red side. My cam has a problem with that color even with white balance, it not as red as it seems.
I used some pictures of Luckenwalde (Niendorf brothers) as template, mine is in the middle, but may be the color is now much more red compared to a century ago.

Again, more red as in real.

I will change it, because I noticed also on the picture of the original Fokker, that my air screw is not peakish enough.

Another thing that was new for me (and very time consuming!) are the panels of lozenge fabric (Aviattic) in a not pre-cut form. I started with the upper wing:

I used the OAW drawings in the Anthology 2 to arrange the colors, here the bottom view:

Top view, next time I could make the preshading stronger.

After a layer of future I added the rib tapes from the Eduard kit as recommended by Aviattic:

And again a detailed view (a clear coat is missing, the last tapes are not yet dry):

I added those tapes also on the front ...

... and wing tip.

The kit was from 2016, also the marking decals. But the lozenge decals and rip tapes are from 2010, and the Eduard decals of that time was not so nice compared to today ones. The tapes gets loose after less then 5 seconds in warm water ::)

Have I mentioned, that this was in 1/48 very fiddly and a very time consuming task? >:(

I'm not sure about the trailing edge, but I will not put there rip tapes. I would not know, how to put them there, and I have simply not enough. The remaining pieces are needed for the lower wings. On the WNW drawing there seems to be no tapes on the trailing edge.
And what about rib tapes on the ailerons? Its hard to be seen on WNW drawing, Eduard provided tapes.

It was a lot of work, but I like the result!

Cheers,
Frank

Well done Frank,

It isn’t easy to get the wingtips so neat!

Fantastic work Frank, I haven't yet applied the lozenges in such an extensive way... I am a little frightened by it!

Somehow I have missed this until now. The propellor is first class except for the colour, but you are going to cahange that. The lozenge transfers look fine to me - well up to your usual standard of modelling. I will be keeping a closer eye in future.

Stephen.

Wow my friends, thanks you very much for such a great feedback!

I have seen in this board so many nice applications of those decals (ok, mostly in 1/32 scale) so I thought my work is nothing special ::) What I definitely have to improve is my shadowing of the ribs below the decals. I experimented before and I found it easy to overdue it, but here it was not enough.

Any thoughts regarding the tapes on the ailerons?
Just noticed on Lance Albatros that he has also no tapes on the ailerons. It makes sence, because on those short surfaces there is not a risk for the fabric. Also the tail plane of my Siemens-Schuckert D.III do not use tapes, but the ailerons (this was a preformed Aviattic).

I will be keeping a closer eye in future.
Thank you Stephen, I would like to do that too on all the other projects. I was surprised, how much activity this group build created! 3, 4 or 5 times more compared to 'normal' operation? I simply do not have the time to follow all the great projects and finish my own entry in time :'( Sorry my friends! But those reports are not lost, can read them in a summer evening on balcony ;)

Cheers,
Frank

Frank,
I've read in several places that tapes were not used on flight control surfaces. Looking at the photos we all study so much that appears indeed the case so I don't include them on my models. I regret I can't recall where I read that comment. If you find a source let me know!
Cheers,
Lance

A bad news: during shaking a 120ml bottle of Alclad black primer breaks and this primed everything with a aggressive deep black:
my face, T-Shirt (disposed immediately), bench, lamps, even the Fokker fuselage and parts,
also my parquet floor:

And the smell!

My mood was not very high anyway, but now it is underground.
This project is on hold now.

May be I will see somewhere later, to find out what and how could be recovered.

Cheers,
Frank

Damned, I am so sorry to read that. It might be a little help that you are not in this alone: the walls next to my paint shop are still sprenkled  in black since a bottle of black color decided not to withstand any more the mechanic forces I had induced. As far as I know Isopropanol should solve the main problems (on the floor) even with Alclad colors. You can order a 3liter canister from e. g. Kremer Pigmente. My fingers remain crossed for a quick fix on the Fokker fuselage!
